Plasmonic field enhancement in a fully coated dielectric near field scanning optical microscope （NSOM） probe under radial polarization illumination is analyzed using an axially symmetric three-dimensional （3D） finite element method （FEM） model. The enhancement factor strongly depends on the illumination spot size, taper angle of the probe, and the metal film thickness. The tolerance of the alignment angle is investigated. Probe designs with different metal coatings and their enhancement performance are studied as well. The nanometric spot size at the tip apex and high field enhancement of the apertureless NSOM

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether a near-infrared fluorescence(NIRF)probe,Cy5.5-d-glucosamine(Cy5.5-2DG),can image arthritis in collagen-induced arthritic(CIA)*** presence of arthritis was verified by both visual examination and micro-computed tomography(MicroCT)*** mice were imaged by a micro-positron emission tomography(MicroPET)scanner one hour after intravenous injection of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose([18F]FDG).After radioactivity of[18F]FDG decayed away,Cy5.5-2DG was injected into a lateral tail vein of the *** tissue targeting and retention of Cy5.5-2DG in CIA mice were evaluated and quantified by an optical imaging *** tissue in CIA mice was clearly visualized by[18F]FDG-MicroPET *** imaging of Cy5.5-2DG in the same mice revealed that the pattern of localization of Cy5.5-2DG in the arthritic tissue was very similar to that of[18F]*** analysis further showed that[18F]FDG uptake in arthritic tissues at one hour post-injection(p.i.)and Cy5.5-2DG uptakes at different time points *** all well correlated(r2 over 0.65).In conclusion,Cy5.5-DG can detect arthritic tissues in living *** good correlation between the[18F]FDG uptake and Cy5.5-2DG accumulation in the same arthritic tissue warrants further investigation of Cy5.5-2DG as an approach for assessment of anti-inflammatory treatments.

Background:Regular physical activity(PA) is an important behavior in improving sleep ***,the short-term effects of PA on sleep are still *** study aimed to verify the effect of different intensities of PA practiced in different periods of the day on the subsequent sleep night in a population-based cohort of young ***::Prospective analyses were conducted for PA performed during the day and its effect on the following sleep night using data from the22-year follow-up of the 1993 Pelotas Birth Cohort in Brazil(mean age of participants-22.6 years).Wrist-worn accelerometry was usedto measure both PA and sleep *** intensity,we analyzed the sleep effect of light PA(LPA),moderate PA,and vigorous PA,stratified by *** variables were sleep time window(STW;the difference between sleep onset and sleep end),total sleep time(TST;the sum of minutes classified as sleep in STW),and sleep percent(SP;SP=(TST/STW);expressed in percentage).We performed generalized estimating equations using Stata ***::The means of STW,TST,and SP were 443.6 min/day,371.1 min/day,and 84%,*** spent in moderate PA and vigorous PA in the morning and afternoon was not associated with sleep *** men,10 min/day of morning LPA increased TST by2.56 min/*** women,10 min/day of morning LPA increased SP by 0.15 percentage *** LPA also increased SP by 0.09 percentage points for *** PA seems to have an inverse effect on sleep variables for any intensity and both ***::The effect of PA on sleep health is intrinsically related to the period of the day in which it is *** effect magnitude is different between *** better sleep health,it is preferable that PA be performed during the day.

Nanotechnology-based drug delivery platforms have been developed over the last two decades because of their favorable features in terms of improved drug bioavailability and *** recent advancement in nanotechnology platforms,this approach still falls short to meet the complexity of biological systems and diseases,such as avoiding systemic side effects,manipulating biological interactions and overcoming drug resistance,which hinders the therapeutic outcomes of the NP-based drug delivery *** address these issues,various strategies have been developed including the use of engineered cells and/or cell membrane-coated *** membrane receptor profiles and characteristics are vital in performing therapeutic functions,targeting,and homing of either engineered cells or cell membrane-coated nanocarriers to the sites of *** this context,we comprehensively discuss various cell-and cell membrane-based drug delivery approaches towards cancer therapy,the therapeutic potential of these strategies,and the limitations associated with engineered cells as drug carriers and cell membrane-associated drug ***,we review various cell types and cell membrane receptors for their potential in targeting,immunomodulation and overcoming drug resistance in cancer.

Objective:To investigate the association between amplification of the two regulatory genes controlling glutathione(GSH) levels,glutathione reductase(PfGR) and glutathione S-transferase (PfGST) genes and sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum(***) isolates collected from different malaria endemic areas of Thailand to standard antimalarial ***:A total of 70 *** isolates were collected from endemic areas of multi-drug resistance (Tak,Chantaburi and Ranong Provinces) during the year *** in vitro assessment of antimalarial activity of *** clones(K1- and Dd2 chloroquine resistant and 3D7- chloroquine sensitive) and isolates to chloroquine,quinine,mefloquine and arteusnate was performed based on SYBR Green modified ***:68(97.14%),11(15.71%) and 28(40%) isolates respectively were classified as chloroquine-,quinine- and mefloquine-resistant isolates. With this limited number of *** isolates included in the analysis,no significant association between amplification of PfGST gene and sensitivity of the parasite to chloroquine, quinine,mefloquine and quinine was *** on PCR analysis,Dd2,Kl and 3D7 clones all contained only one copy of the PfGST *** isolates(70) also carried only one copy number of PfGST *** appears to be an association between amplification of PfGR gene and chloroquine *** 3D7 and Dd2 clones were found to carry only one PfGR gene copy, whereas the K1 clone carried two gene ***:Chloroquine resistance is likely to be a consequence of multi-factors and enzymes in the GSH system may be partly involved. Larger number of parasite isolates are required to increase power of the hypothesis testing in order to confirm the involvement of both genes as well as other genes implicated in glutathione metabolism in conferring chloroquine resistance.

Microwave based detector for continuous assessment of intracerebral hemorrhage

Continuous detecting of the rate and size of hematoma expansion is crucial for intracerebral hemorrhage management and treatment. To continuously assess intracerebral hemorrhage in human head, a novel nondestructive microwave head detecting system is presented in this study. An open-ended cylindrical waveguide is employed as sensing antenna, which is operated associated with a coaxial cable for signal transmission and data acquisition. Measurement of amplitude data over the frequency range of 100–400 MHz is processed to evaluate the changes in intracerebral hemorrhage, based on the system's operating principle that the sensor functions as a resonant cavity. Furthermore, 3D printed anatomically and dielectrically realistic human head phantoms with different lesions are fabricated to verify the efficacy of this proposed hemorrhagic stroke assessment *** is worth noting that the quantitative results show that the system operating in TE_(111) mode is able to detect intracerebral hemorrhage size change as small as 1 cm^3, demonstrating the possibility of this proposed head evaluating system in future preclinical trials.

One of the thorny problems currently impeding the applications of the fluorescence imaging technique is the poor spatial resolution in deep ***-switchable fluorescence(USF)imaging is a novel imaging tool that has recently been explored to possibly surmount the above-mentioned ***,αβ-cyclodextrin/indocyanine green(ICG)complex-encapsulated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM)nanogel was synthesized and studied for ex vivo/in vivo deep tissue/high-resolution near infrared USF(NIR-USF)*** be specific,our results revealed that the average diameter of the as-prepared nanogels was significantly decreased to-32 nm from-335 nm compared to the reported ICG-PNIPAM ***,the excitation/emission characteristics of the ICG itself in present nanogels were almost completely retained,and the resultant nanogel exhibited high physiological stability and positive *** particular,the signal-to-noise ratio of the USF image for the PNIPAM/P-cyclodextrin/ICG nanogel(33.01±2.42 dB)was prominently higher than that of the ICG-PNIPAM nanoparticles(18.73±0.33 dB)in 1.5-cm-thick chicken breast *** NIR-USF imaging in 3.5-cm-thick chicken breast tissues was achieved using this new *** e x v iv o NIR-USF imaging of the mouse liver was also successfully *** experiments showed that the present nanogels were able to be effectively accumulated into U87 tumor-bearing mice via enhanced permeability and retention effects,and the high-resolution NIR-USF imaging of in v ivo tumor was efficiently *** metabolism and in vivo biodistribution of the nanogels were ***,the results suggest that the current nanogel is a highly promising NIR-USF probe for deep tissue and high-resolution USF imaging.

Near-infrared fluorescence imaging has emerged as a noninvasive,inexpensive,and ionizing-radiation-free monitoring tool for assessing tumor growth and treatment *** particular,ultrasound switchable fluorescence(USF)imaging has been explored with improved imaging sensitivity and spatial resolution in centimeter-deep *** study achieved the size control of polymer-based and indocyanine green(ICG)encapsulated USF contrast agents,capable of accumulating in the tumor after intravenous *** nanoprobes varied in size from 58 to 321 *** bioimaging profiles demonstrated that the proposed nanoparticles can efficiently eliminate the background light from normal tissue and show a tumor-specific fluorescence enhancement in the BxPC-3 tumor-bearing mice models possibly via the enhanced permeability and retention *** vivo tumor USF imaging further demonstrated that these nanoprobes can effectively be switched“ON”with enhanced fluorescence in response to a focused ultrasound stimulation in the tumor microenvironment,contributing to the high-resolution USF ***,our findings suggest that ICG-encapsulated nanoparticles are good candidates for USF imaging of tumors in live animals,indicating their great potential in optical tumor imaging in deep tissue.

A rapid,precise method for identifying waterborne pathogens is critically needed for effective disinfection and better ***,conventional methods,such as culture-based counting,generally suffer from slow detection times and low ***,we developed a rapid detection method for tracing waterborne pathogens by an innovative optofluidic platform,a plasmonic bacteria on a nanoporous mirror,that allows effective hydrodynamic cell trapping,enrichment of pathogens,and optical signal *** designed and simulated the integrated optofluidic platform to maximize the enrichment of the bacteria and to align bacteria on the nanopores and plasmonic mirror via hydrodynamic cell *** nanoparticles are self-assembled to form antenna arrays on the surface of bacteria,such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa,by replacing citrate with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in order to amplify the signal of the plasmonic optical *** to the synergistic contributions of focused light via the nanopore geometry,self-assembled nanoplasmonic optical antennas on the surface of bacteria,and plasmonic mirror,we obtain a sensitivity of detecting *** as low as 102 cells/ml via surface-enhanced Raman *** believe that our label-free strategy via an integrated optofluidic platform will pave the way for the rapid,precise identification of various pathogens.
