Relationship between left-behind status and cognitive function in older Chinese adults: a prospective 3-year cohort study

Background Due to the inaccuracy of the traditional geographical distance-based definition of left-behind status,data on the negative effect of left-behind status on cognitive function among older adults are *** This study examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of left-behind status with cognitive function in older Chinese *** left-behind status definition was based on the frequency of face-to-face parent-child *** Data from a nationally representative sample of 8682 older adults(60+years)in 2015(5658 left behind and 3024 non-left behind),of which 6933 completed the follow-up in 2018,were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal ***-behind older adults werebroadlydefined as those aged 60+years who had living adult children and saw their children less than once per *** cognitive function was assessed with a composite cognitive test with higher total scores indicating better cognitive *** Left-behind older adults had significantly lower cognitive test scores than non-left-behind older adults in both 2015(11.1(6.0)vs 13.2(5.9),t=15.863,p<0.001)and 2018(10.0(6.6)vs 12.4(6.7),t=14.177,p<0.001).After adjusting for demographic factors,lifestyle factors,chronic medical conditions and the baseline cognitive test score(in the longitudinal analysis only),on average,the cognitive test score of left-behind older adults was 0.628 lower than their non-left-behind counterparts in 2015(t=5.689,p<0.001).This difference in cognitive test scores attenuated to 0.322 but remained significant in 2018(t=2.733,p=0.006).Conclusions Left-behind older Chinese adults have a higher risk of poor cognitive function and cognitive decline than their non-left-behind *** efforts targeting left-behind older adults,such as encouraging adult children to visit their parents more regularly,are warranted to maintain or delay the progression of cognitive decline.

Functional neuroanatomy in panic disorder:Status quo of the research

AIM To provide an overview of the current research in the functional neuroanatomy of panic *** Panic disorder(PD) is a frequent psychiatric disease. Gorman et al(1989; 2000) proposed a comprehensive neuroanatomical model of PD, which suggested that fear-and anxiety-related responses are mediated by a so-called "fear network" which is centered in the amygdala and includes the hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray region, locus coeruleus and other brainstem sites. We performed a systematic search by the electronic database PubMed. Thereby, the main focus was laid on recent neurofunctional, neurostructural, and neurochemical studies(from the period between January 2012 and April 2016). Within this frame, special attention was given to the emerging field of imaging genetics. RESULTS We noted that many neuroimaging studies have reinforced the role of the "fear network" regions in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. However, recent functional studies suggest abnormal activation mainly in an extended fear network comprising brainstem, anterior and midcingulate cortex(ACC and MCC), insula, and lateral as well as medial parts of the prefrontal cortex. Interestingly, differences in the amygdala activation were not as consistently reported as one would predict from the hypothesis of Gorman et al(2000). Indeed, amygdala hyperactivation seems to strongly depend on stimuli and experimental paradigms, sample heterogeneity and size, as well as on limitations of neuroimaging techniques. Advanced neurochemical studies have substantiated the major role of serotonergic, noradrenergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the pathophysiology of PD. However, alterations of GABAergic function in PD are still a matter of debate and also their specificity remains questionable. A promising new research approach is "imaging genetics". Stigma and its impact on the families of former soldiers of the German Armed Forces: An exploratory study

Background: Military families who have a family member with a mental illness see themselves confronted with many demands. Stigmatization is one of these challenges. Stigmatization affects not only the individual who suffers from a mental illness but also other family members via stigma by association and vicarious stigma. Stigma by association occurs when mental illness stigma spills over to individuals associated with an individual with a mental illness. Vicarious stigma describes the suffering of family members when they note the impact of stigma on their relative with mental illness. As a societal phenomenon, stigma plays out in social interactions and might therefore influence the social networks of families. It is also associated with healthcare ***: Narrative interviews were conducted with 15 family members(partners, spouses, parents and children) of former soldiers of the German Armed Forces with a service-induced mental illness. The transcribed interview data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, in which codes were formed and emerging themes were systemized. Relationships between stigma, the families’ reactions to it, its effects on their social relationships and its interference with their healthcare utilization were ***: This study provides a detailed description of how relatives of former German soldiers with mental health problems experience stigma by association and vicarious stigma. Their perceptions are shown in a model that describes stigma-related attitudes, reactions to them and their effects on the social relationships of former soldiers’ families. Impact of transcranial electrical stimulation on serum neurotrophic factors and language function in patients with speech disorders
