Our previous research studies have shown that Veratrilla baillonii Franch,a food supplement used by ethnic minorities in Southwest China,has multiple pharmacological activities,such as detoxification,antiinflammatory,antioxidant,and anti-insulin ***,the detailed signal pathways for its salutary effect on damages in multiple organs due to type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)remains *** current study is to evaluate the therapeutic effects of *** on T2DM rats and to explore the underlying *** T2DM rat model was successfully established by a high-sugar and high-fat diet(HFD)combination with intraperitoneal injection of a small dose of streptozotocin(STZ,35 mg/kg).Biochemical analysis and histopatholgical examinations were conducted to evaluate the anti-diabetic potential of water extracts of ***(WVBF).The results showed that the WVBF treatment can improve hyperglycemia and insulin resistance,ameliorate the liver,kidney and pancreas injuries via decreasing inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α,and oxidative *** investigation suggested that WVBF modulates the signal transductions of the IRS1/PI3K/AKT/GLUT4 and AMPK *** findings demonstrate potentials of WVBF in the treatment of T2DM and possible mechanisms for its hepatoprotective activities.

Parylene film for sidewall passivation in SCREAM process

Trench sidewall passivation is a key step in the SCREAM (single crystal reactive etching and metallization) process for releasing suspended MEMS structures. In this paper, the parylene thin film is reported to serve as the passivation layer owing to its excellent conformality, chemical inertness, mechanical performance, and especially, low growth temperature. The deposited parylene films are characterized and the test structures are released through SCREAM process utilizing the parylene films as a passivation layer. The results show that as a passivation layer the parylene has more merits than the PECVD SiO2 film.

BACKGROUND： Pharmacological research has shown that cactus polysaccharide （CP） has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-aging, and immune-stimulating activities. It may also provide protective effects against oxidative stress injuries in the rat brain. OBJECTIVE： To validate the effects of CP on H2O2-induced oxidative stress injuries in the rat cerebral cortex and hippocampal slices 30 minutes prior to injury, as well as 30 minutes and 2.5 hours after injury. DESIGN： A randomized controlled experiment. SETTINGS： Department of Pharmacology, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology; Department of Pharmacology, College of Medical Science, Yangtze University. MATERIALS： A total of 50 male Sprague Dawley （SD） rats, normal grade and weighing 200 300 g, were provided by the Laboratory Animal Center of Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The protocol was performed in accordance with ethical guidelines for the use and care of animals. Cactus polysaccharide, a dried needle crystal, was extracted from Opuntia milpa alta at the Chemistry and Environment Engineering School of Yangtze University. The following chemicals and instruments were used： 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride （Sigma, St Louis, Missouri, USA）; lactate dehydrogenase （LDH）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, glutathione （GSH）, and total antioxidant competence （T-AOC） assays （Jiancheng-Bioeng Institute, Nanjing）; McIllwain tissue chopper （Mickle Laboratory Engineering, USA）; and ELISA reader and Magellan software （TECAN, Austria）. METHODS： This experiment was performed at the Department of Pharmacology, Medical College of Yangtze University, between March and June 2006. All rats were sacrificed after anesthesia. 目的:通过灌胃无水乙醇建立小鼠乙醇性胃溃疡模型,研究日官孜玛总提物对小鼠乙醇性胃溃疡的保护作用。方法:随机将60只KM系小鼠分为空白对照组、模型组、奥美拉唑阳性组、日官孜玛总提物低、中、高剂量组,共6组每组10只。灌胃给药一周后,禁食不禁水24h,末次给药1.5h后,除空白对照组给同等体积的生理盐水外,其余五组按照体重灌胃0.1mL/10g的无水乙醇造模1h,建立小鼠乙醇性胃溃疡模型。造模1h后,取血取胃,计算乙醇性胃溃疡的损伤发生率及损伤抑制率,制备血清上层液和胃组织匀浆液,苏木精-伊红(HE)染色观察胃组织病理学变化;试剂盒检测血清中一氧化氮(NO)、超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)和胃组织中丙二醛(MDA)、髓过氧化物酶(MPO)的水平;实时荧光定量PCR(qRT-PCR)检测胃组织中p65、IKK-β、TNF-α和IL-1β的mRNA表达情况。结果:正常对照组小鼠胃黏膜光滑完整,无出血现象,其余各组小鼠均出现了黏膜出血、组织不同程度坏死。模型组小鼠胃损伤最为严重,表现为大块的出血面积,呈鲜红色。与正常组相比,模型对照组HE染色图表现为组织整体结构异常,黏膜层小面积坏死,黏膜下层结缔组织排列疏松,少见淋巴细胞浸润,血清中NO、胃组织中MDA、MPO及胃组织中p65、IKK-β、TNF-α和IL-1β的mRNA表达水平显著升高(P<0.05),血清中SOD水平降低(P<0.05);与模型组相比,阳性组和高、中、低剂量日官孜玛总提物给药组则表现为点状或条状出血,出血面积明显缩小、损伤发生率明显下降(P<0.05)、小鼠胃组织病理损伤有明显改善,血清、组织相关指标均出现不同程度的改善。结论:日官孜玛总提物能通过抑制NF-κB信号通路中关键基因p65、IKK-β、TNF-α和IL-1β的mRNA表达,抑制氧化应激和炎症反应,对小鼠乙醇性胃溃疡产生保护性作用。

This paper carries on anti-tumor activities research of the ethanol extract of Magnolia officinalis（MEE）. Our results showed that MEE has obvious anti-tumor activities to transplanted tumor model of the mouse S180 sarcoma in vivo. The inhibitory rates of tumor in both MEE 1.0 g/kg and 2.0 g/kg were more than 50 %, however it has not showed a dose-dependent manner. Although it has less damage than cisplatin, MEE can inhibit the immune system by obviously suppressed the spleen index and thymus index. These results indicated the anti-tumor mechanism of MEE might be related to the depressing of immune organs.

A thermodynamic perspective on electrode poisoning in solid oxide fuel cells

A critical challenge to the commercialization of clean and high-efficiency solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC)technology is the insuf-ficient stack lifespan caused by a variety of degradation mechanisms,which are associated with cell components and chemical *** components related degradation refers to thermal/chemical/electrochemical deterioration of cell materials under operating conditions,whereas the latter regards impurities in feedstocks of oxidant(air)and reductant(fuel).This article provides a thermodynamic perspective on the understanding of the impurities-induced degradation mechanisms in *** discussion focuses on using thermodynamic ana-lysis to elucidate poisoning mechanisms in cathodes by impurity species such as Cr,CO_(2),H_(2)O,and SO_(2) and in the anode by species such as S(or H_(2)S),SiO_(2),and P_(2)(or PH_(3)).The author hopes the presented fundamental insights can provide a theoretical foundation for search-ing for better technical solutions to address the critical degradation challenges.

Fast Blood Oxygenation through Hemocompatible Asymmetric Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity Membranes

Membrane technology has attracted considerable attention for chemical and medical applications,among *** organs play important roles in medical science.A membrane oxygenator,also known as artificial lung,can replenish O_(2) and remove CO_(2) of blood to maintain the metabolism of patients with cardiopulmonary ***,the membrane,a key component,is subjected to inferior gas transport property,leakage propensity,and insufficient *** this study,we report efficient blood oxygenation by using an asymmetric nanoporous membrane that is fabricated using the classic nonsolvent-induced phase separation method for polymer of intrinsic *** intrinsic superhydrophobic nanopores and asymmetric configuration endow the membrane with water impermeability and gas ultrapermeability,up to 3,500 and 1,100 gas permeation units for CO_(2) and O_(2),***,the rational hydrophobic–hydrophilic nature,electronegativity,and smoothness of the surface enable the substantially restricted protein adsorption,platelet adhesion and activation,hemolysis,and thrombosis for the ***,during blood oxygenation,the asymmetric nanoporous membrane shows no thrombus formation and plasma leakage and exhibits fast O_(2) and CO_(2) transport processes with exchange rates of 20 to 60 and 100 to 350 ml m^(−2) min^(−1),respectively,which are 2 to 6 times higher than those of conventional *** concepts reported here offer an alternative route to fabricate high-performance membranes and expand the possibilities of nanoporous materials for membrane-based artificial organs.
