single-neuron neurodegeneration as a degenerative model for Parkinson’s disease

The positive effect of levodopa in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease,although it is limited in time and has severe side effects,has encouraged the scientific community to look for new drugs that can stop the neurodegenerative process or even regenerate the neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons.successful preclinical studies with coenzyme Q10,mitoquinone,isradipine,nilotinib,TCH346,neurturin,zonisamide,deferiprone,prasinezumab,and cinpanemab prompted clinical trials.However,these failed and after more than 50 years levodopa continues to be the key drug in the treatment of the disease,despite its severe side effects after 4–6 years of chronic treatment.The lack of translated successful results obtained in preclinical investigations based on the use of neurotoxins that do not exist in the human body as new drugs for Parkinson’s disease treatment is a big problem.In our opinion,the cause of these failures lies in the experimental animal models involving neurotoxins that do not exist in the human body,such as 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and 6-hydroxydopamine,that induce a very fast,massive and expansive neurodegenerative process,which contrasts with the extremely slow one of neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons.The exceedingly slow progress of the neurodegenerative process of the nigrostriatal neurons in idiopathic Parkinson’s patients is due to(i)a degenerative model in which the neurotoxic effect of an endogenous neurotoxin affects a single neuron,(ii)a neurotoxic event that is not expansive and(iii)the fact that the neurotoxin that triggers the neurodegenerative process is produced inside the neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons.The endogenous neurotoxin that fits this degenerative model involving one single neuron at a time is aminochrome,since it(i)is generated within neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons,(ii)does not cause an expansive neurotoxic effect and(iii)triggers all the mechanisms involved in the neurodegenerative process of the nigrostriata

Hysteresis loop behaviors of ferroelectric thin films: A Monte Carlo simulation study

The ferroelectric response of bismuth titanate Bi4Ti3O12 （BIT） thin film is studied through a Monte Carlo simulation of hysteresis loops. The ferroelectric system is described by using a Diffour Hamiltonian with three terms： the electric field applied in the z direction, the nearest dipole-dipole interaction in the transversal （x-y） direction, and the nearest dipole-dipole interaction in the direction perpendicular to the thin film （the z axis）. In the sample construction, we take into consideration the dipole orientations of the monoclinic and orthorhombic structures that can appear in BIT at low temperature in the ferroelectric state. The effects of temperature, stress, and the concentration of pinned dipole defects are assessed by using the hysteresis loops. The results indicate the changes in the hysteresis area with temperature and stress, and the asymmetric hysteresis loops exhibit evidence of the imprint failure mechanism with the emergence of pinned dipolar defects. The simulated shift in the hysteresis loops conforms to the experimental ferroelectric response.

Plant Growth-Promoting Traits in Rhizobacteria of Heavy Metal-Resistant Plants and Their Effects on Brassica nigra seed Germination

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that uses plants and their associated microbes to clean up pollutants from the soil, water, and air. In order to select the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contamination, 60 bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of two endemic plants, Prosopis laevigata and spharealcea angustifolia, in a heavy metal-contaminated zone in Mexico. These rhizobacterial strains were characterized for the growth at different pH and salinity, extracellular enzyme production, solubilization of phosphate, heavy metal resistance, and plant growth-promoting(PGP) traits, including production of siderophores and indol-3-acetic acid(IAA). Overall, the obtained rhizobacteria presented multiple PGP traits. These rhizobacteria were also resistant to high levels of heavy metals(including As as a metalloid)(up to 480 mmol L(-1)As(V), 24 mmol L(-1)Pb(Ⅱ), 21 mmol L(-1)Cu(Ⅱ), and 4.5 mmol L(-1)Zn(Ⅱ)). seven rhizobacterial strains with the best PGP traits were identified as members of Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Curtobacterium, and Microbacterium, and were selected for further bioassay.The inoculation of Brassica nigra seeds with Microbacterium sp. CE3R2, Microbacterium sp. NE1R5, Curtobacterium sp. NM1R1,and Microbacterium sp. NM3E9 facilitated the root development; they significantly improved the B. nigra seed germination and root growth in the presence of heavy metals such as 2.2 mmol L(-1)Zn(Ⅱ). The rhizobacterial strains isolated in the present study had the potential to be used as efficient bioinoculants in phytorremediation of soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals.

Transparent conductive stannic oxide coatings employing an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique:The relevance of the molarity content in the aerosol solution for improvement the electrical properties

Highly transparent conductive stoichiometric nanocrystalline stannic oxide coatings were deposited onto Corning®EAGLE XG®slim glass substrates.Including each coating,it was deposited for various concentrations in the aerosol solution with the substrate temperature maintained at 623.15 K by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis(UsP)technique.Nitrogen was em-ployed both as the solution carrier in addition to aerosol directing gas,maintaining its flow rates at 3500.0 and 500.0 mL/min,respectively.The coatings were polycrystalline,with preferential growth along the stannic oxide(112)plane,irrespective of the molarity content in the spray solution.The coating prepared at 0.2 M,a concentration in the aerosol solution,showed an average transmission of 60%in the visible light region spectrum with a maximum conductivity of 24.86 s/cm.The coatings deposited exhibited in the general photoluminescence spectrum emission colors of green,greenish white,and bluish white calculated on the intensities of the excitonic and oxygen vacancy defect level emissions.

Three Uncommon seaweeds of the Pacific Coast of Mexico

This report describes a new record and two unusual and rare species of marine algae collected from Oaxaca, Michoacán, Jalisco and Baja California sur at Mexican Pacific coast. Boodleopsis verticillata is the first record in the Pacific shore of Mexico, in the case of Melobesia polystromatica, this is the sixth record at tropical Pacific while Litholepis sonorensisis reported for the third time in the Gulf of California. These results suggest that the taxonomic inventory of seaweed in the Pacific coast of Mexico is not yet complete, so attention must be given to the epiphytes, and other small and delicate species that inhabit the coast of Mexico. Morphological descriptions, distributional range, reproductive stage and samples examined are included.

Chronic wounds are defined as wounds that fail to proceed through the normal phases of wound healing in an orderly and timely manner.The most common and inevitable impairment to wound healing is the installation of an infection,usually in the case of chronic wounds.Therefore,the objective of the present review was to identify the importance of copper nanoparticles in dressings for wound healing.Nanoparticles such as silver,gold and copper combat infectious processes through the inhibition of protein synthesis,peroxidation of the cell membrane and destroying the nucleic acids of bacteria and viruses.Among bioactive nanoparticles,copper plays a complex role in various cells,it modulates several cytokines and growth factor mechanisms of action and is essentially involved in all stages of the wound healing process.More importantly,copper plays a key role in skin regeneration and angiogenesis and accelerates the healing process through induction of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and angiogenesis by hypoxia-induced factor-1-alpha(HIF-1α)action where copper enhances HIF-1αexpression and HIF-1αbinding to the critical motifs in the promoter and putative enhancer regions of HIF-1-regulated genes.

Influence of flooding and vegetation on carbon,nitrogen,and phosphorus dynamics in the pore water of a spartina alterniflora salt marsh

Four sites were selected in a salt marsh in the Bahia Blanca Estuary （Argentina）：（1） low marsh （flooded by the tide twice daily） vegetated by s. alterniflora; （2） non-vegetated low marsh; （3） high marsh （flooded only in spring tides） vegetated by s. alterniflora; （4） non-vegetated high marsh. The pH and Eh were measured in sediments, while dissolved nutrients （ammonium, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate） and particulate organic matter （POM） were determined in pore water, pH （6.2-8.7） was only affected by vegetation in low areas. Eh （from -300 to 250 mV） was lower at low sites than at high ones; in the latter, the values were higher in the non-vegetated sediments. The POM concentration was greater in the high marsh than in the low marsh, with no effect of vegetation. Ammonium was the most abundant nitrogen nutrient species in pore water, except in the non-vegetated high marsh where nitrate concentration was higher. All nitrogen nutrients were affected by both flooding and vegetation. Phosphate was always present in pore water at all sites throughout the year and its concentration varied within narrow limits, with no effect of flooding and greater values always at non-vegetated sites. Our results showed that the variability of the pore water composition within the marsh is greater than the temporal variation, meaning that both tidal flooding and vegetation are important in the dynamics of nutrients and organic matter in the sediment pore water.

BACKGROUND Perioperative fluorouracil plus leucovorin,oxaliplatin,and docetaxel(FLOT)improves prognosis in locally advanced gastric cancer(LAGC).Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte(NLR),lymphocyte-tomonocyte(LMR),and platelet-to-lymphocyte(PLR)ratios are prognostic biomarkers but not predictive factors.AIM To assess blood ratios’(NLR,LMR and PLR)potential predictive response to FLOT and survival outcomes in resectable LAGC patients.METHODs This was a multicentric retrospective study investigating the clinical potential of NLR,LMR,and PLR in resectable LAGC patients,treated with at least one preoperative FLOT cycle,from 12 Portuguese hospitals.Means were compared through non-parametric Mann-Whitney tests.Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis defined the cut-off values as:High PLR>141 for progression and>144 for mortality;high LMR>3.56 for T stage regression(TsR).Poisson and Cox regression models the calculated relative risks/hazard ratios,using NLR,pathologic complete response,TsR,and tumor regression grade(TRG)as independent variables,and overall survival(Os)as the dependent variable.REsULTs This study included 295 patients(mean age,63.7 years;59.7% males).NLR was correlated with survival time(r=0.143,P=0.014).PLR was associated with systemic progression during FLOT(P=0.022)and mortality(P=0.013),with high PLR patients having a 2.2-times higher risk of progression[95% confidence interval(CI):0.89-5.26]and 1.5-times higher risk of mortality(95%CI:0.92-2.55).LMR was associated with TsR,and high LMR patients had a 1.4-times higher risk of achieving TsR(95%CI:1.01-1.99).Os benefit was found with TsR(P=0.015)and partial/complete TRG(Ps without TsR and with no evidence of pathological response had 2.1-times(95%CI:1.14-3.96)and 2.8-times(95%CI:1.6-5)higher risk of death.CONCLUsION Higher NLR is correlated with longer survival time.High LMR patients have a higher risk of decreasing T stage,whereas high PLR patients have higher odds of progressing under FLOT and dying.Patients with TsR and a pathological re

Two agronomical aspects of Tagetes terniflora HBK for essential oil production

The genus Tagetes is a possible source of essential oils for the biorational control of pests and diseases in Mexico. The aim of the present study was to assess the distance between plants (PD;15 × 80, 30 × 80 and 60 × 80 cm) and urea fertilization (0, 60 and 120 kg·he-1 N) for biomass production and essential oil in Tagetes terniflora HBK. Oil was obtained by the aerial part hydro-distillation and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Factors N, PD and their interaction did not change plant height or the number of branches per plant;however, PD factor modified fresh tissue (FW) and dry tissue (DW) weights and the amount of oil per plant (p ≤ 0.05) which represent a good biomass production (30 to 72.5 ton·he-1 FW, 11 to 27 ton·he-1 DW) and oil producing (168 to 383 L·he-1 ) potential in the field. Urea did not have effect on both biomass and oil response per plant but interaction of 15 x 80 DP and 120 N could favor higher biomass and oil production potential (78 ton FW, 28 ton·he-1 DW and 608 L·he-1 , respectively). Essential oil yield varied from 0.3 to 2.1% according to the management conditions. A total of 11 major compounds were identified in essential oil, the relative quantity was constant in different agronomic management factors: E- tagetone (22%), cistagetenone (20.4%), transtagetenone (20.4%), dihydrotagetone (13.4%) and cis-β-ocimene (10.3%), trans-β-ocimene (5.0%), propenyl anisole (4.3%), sphatulenole (1.1%), allyl anisole (0.7%), Z-tagetone (0.5%) and limonene (0.5%).
