Hematological Profile of Newborns Hospitalized for Neonatal Bacterial Infection in the Neonatology of the Pediatric Department of Gabriel Toure Teaching Hospital Bamako, Mali

The blood count is an easily achievable routine exam and will it have specifics in the event of a neonatal bacterial infection? Hence, the present study with the objective of determining the profile of the hemogram of newborns hospitalized for early bacterial neonatal infection. Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional study that took place from June 27 to September 03, 2016 in the neonatology department of teaching hospital Gabriel Toure. Included were all neonates hospitalized for early neonatal bacterial infection (ENBI) and who had a blood count. Results: We included 227 patients, 64.8% of whom were premature. The sex ratio was 1.4. The infants were less than 24 hours old in 93.6% of the cases. The mean hemoglobin level was 16.435 g/dl [8.8 - 22.26]. Erythrocytopenia was found in 18.5% of cases. Anemia was present in 17% of newborns. The average leukocyte was 15.228·103/mm3 [1.4 - 72]. Hyperleukocytosis and leukopenia were found in 12.32% and 6.6% respectively. Neutropenia and lymphopenia were present in 14.5% and 30.8%. There was a correlation between leukocytosis of negative blood cultures (23/27) (p = 0.030). For Neutrophils, neutrophilia was more observed in term neonates and neutropenia in premature infants (p = 0.03). Monocytosis was present in 13.6% of cases. One quarter (25.5%) of newborns had thrombocytopenia. Conclusion: Hematological variations did not allow a specific profile of newborns hospitalized for early neonatal bacterial infection to be identified.

Hematological, antioxidant and protective performance of Usnea longissima on chemical induced hepatotoxicity in experimental animals

Objective: To investigated the Hematological, antioxidant and protective performance of Usnea longissima (U. longissima) on CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in experimental animals. Methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced by CCl4 (1 mL/kg body weigt 1:1 CCl4 i.p.), ethanolic U. longissima extracts at a doses (200 and 400 mg/kg body weigt) were administered to and compared with Silymarin (25 mg/kg body weigt) and Hematological, antioxidant and enzymatic, non-enzymatic parameters were assessed through the liver functions test. All the observation was also supplemented with histopathological examination of liver sections. Results: Phytochemical investigation showed that ethanolic extract contains poly phenolic compounds tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins and acute toxicity study shows that ethanolic extract was safe up to 2000 mg/kg body weight. The toxicant induced a rise in the plasma enzyme levels of ALT, AST, ALP and total bilirubin level. This increased level was significantly decreased by the extract at 400 mg/kg body weight than 200 mg/kg body weight. The animals were prevented (partly or fully) which was showed in the histopathological changes using ethonolic U. longissima extract. Conclusions: The outcome of this study reveals that, there is a powerful antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of U. longissima. It is believed that the present constituents are responsible for courting the hepatic disease and alternative components have the power to act as free radical scavenging properties.

A Survey on Neuropsychological State, Oxidative Stress and Hematological Parameters in Coke Oven Workers

Coke oven factories are one of the main emitting sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s which have been identified as highly carcinogenic chemicals by IARC. Induction of oxidative stress and following disrupting pathways has been repeatedly reported in subjects exposed to PAHs. This study was performed to monitor the oxidative stress markers, Hematological and biochemical parameters, and psychological states in coke oven workers. 100 male subjects were included in this comparative cross-sectional study. At first 50 male workers who were 22 - 63 and worked in the steel factory located in South-East of Iran were contained. Control subjects were chosen from Esfahan, in the factory’s neighborhood, consisting of 50 office workers without any background of occupational exposure to metals. The blood levels of Hematological factors and oxidative stress were measured. In order to compare data, two-sample t test was applied. In order to measure the correlation between variables, Pearson correlation coefficient was applied. The mean level of total antioxidant capacity, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hematocrit were significantly lower in the workers in association with increased lipid per oxidation (LPO). A positive correlation existed between work history, hyper thyroids (r2 = 0.288, p = 0.01), and endocrine disorders (r2 = 0.309, p = 0.028). Occupational exposure of coke oven workers to PAHs can induce oxidative stress and consequent metabolic and neuropsychological disorders. When workers take daily shower and use protective tools, absorption of toxic elements would decrease so that reaching them to the body can be suitably limited.

Quality of life research is an emerging and rapidly developing health measurement technology.Quality of life assessment is performed using scales.Accurate quality of life assessment provides comprehensive information of patient which allows clinicians to put emphasis on overall quality of life(Total QOL)of patient.Quality of life scales have been applied for analysis of diseases such as leukemia and immune thrombocytopenia.This article reviews the use of commonly used quality of life scales for Hematological diseases.

Clinical and Hematological study of canine Ehrlichiosis with other hemoprotozoan parasites in Kolkata,West Bengal,India

Objective:To observe other hemoprotozoan diseases with canine ehrlichiosis und to evaluate the clinical and Hematological aspects of dogs naturally infected with ehrlichiosis with other hemoprotozoun diseases.Methods:Blood was collected for Hematological value and Giemsa stained blood smear was made for diagnosis of Ehrlichia sp.and other hemoprotozoan parasites from naturally infected dogs.Case history was taken from the owner and clinical signs and symptoms were noted.Results:A total of 47 cases of ehrlichiosis in dogs were reported with babesiosis(8.51%)and hepatozoonosis(6.38%)hemoprotozoan diseases.Ehrlichia cams,Ehrlichia ewingii,Brucella canis,Babesia gibsoni and Hepatozoon canis were observed under oil immersion lense of microscope in Giemsa stained peripheral blood smears.Marked anaemia and neutrophilic leukocytosis were observed.Conclusions:The results of this study stated that clinical and haeinatological changes occurred in canine ehrlichiosis with babesiosis and hepatozoonosis due to parasitemia.In mixed infection,the disease more severe,and also it depended on immunity of animals.Babesia gibsoni and Hepatozoon canis with Ehrlichia sp.were first reported from West Bengal state of India by this study.

Advances in haplo-identical stem cell transplantation in adults with high-risk Hematological malignancies

Allogeneic bone marrow transplant is a life-saving procedure for adults and children that have high-risk or relapsed Hematological malignancies. Incremental advances in the procedure, as well as expanded sources of donor hematopoietic cell grafts have significantly improved overall rates of success. Yet, the outcomes for patients for whom suitable donors cannot be found remain a significant limitation. These patients may benefit from a hematopoietic cell transplant wherein a relative donor is fully haplotype mismatched. Previously this procedure was limited by graft rejection, lethal graft-versus-host disease, and increased treatmentrelated toxicity. Recent approaches in haplo-identical transplantation have demonstrated significantly improved outcomes. Based on years of incremental preclinical research into this unique form of bone marrow transplant, a range of approaches have now been studied in patients in relatively large phase Ⅱ trials that will be summarized in this review.

Emerging role of long non-coding RNAs in normal and malignant hematopoiesis

Long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs)have recently been discovered and are increasingly recognized as vital components of modern molecular biology.Accumulating evidence shows that lncRNAs have emerged as important mediators in diverse biological processes such as cell differentiation,pluripotency,and tumorigenesis,while the function of lncRNAs in the field of normal and malignant hematopoiesis remains to be further elucidated.Here,we widely reviewed recent advances and summarize the characteristics and basic mechanisms of lncRNAs and keep abreast of developments of lncRNAs within the field of normal and malignant hematopoiesis.Based on gene regulatory networks at different levels of lncRNAs participation,lncRNAs have been shown to regulate gene expression from epigenetics,transcription and post transcription.The expression of lncRNAs is highly cell-specific and critical for the development and activation of hematopoiesis.Moreover,we also summarized the role of lncRNAs involved in Hematological malignancies in recent years.LncRNAs have been found to play an emerging role in normal and malignant hematopoiesis,which may provide novel ideas for the diagnosis and therapeutic targets of Hematological diseases in the foreseeable future.

Objective:To investigate the antitumor effect of maesopsin 4-O-β-glucoside(TAT2) isolated from the leaves of Artocarpus tonkinensis(A.tonkinensis) A.Chev.ex Gagnep.Methods:The antitumor activity of TAT2 was evaluated in Lewis lung carcinoma(LLC) tumor-bearing mice.BALB/c mice had tumors induced by implantation with 2× 10~6 LLC cells into the subcutaneous right posterior Hank.Tumor-bearing mice were treated orally with a range of doses of TAT2 and a standard drug,doxorubicin.Animals were observed for tumor growth and mortality rate.Blood was collected to determine Hematological and biochemical parameters.Results TAT2 was isolated from an ethanolic extract of 1.tonkinensis leaves.Its structure was determined by MS and NMR spectroscopy,and identified as TAT2.The compound did not show acute toxicity at the highest dose tested(2 OIK) mg/kg body weight).TAT2 exhibited antitumor activity by decreasing tumor growth,increasing the survival rale,and ameliorating some Hematological and biochemical parameters at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight(P<0.05).Conclusions:These results indicate that TAT2 possesses clear antitumor activity.Due to its bioavailability and low toxicity,and the fact that it could be isolated in a large scale from A.tonkinensis leaves,the compound shows promise as a potential anticancer drug.

In vitro and in vivo anticancer activity of Indigofera cassioides Rottl.Ex. DC.

Objective:To evaluate the antitumor,cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of methanolic leaf extract of Indigofera cassioides(MEIC) against transplantable tumors and human cancer cell lines.Methods:MEIC was investigated for its short term cytotoxicity on EAC and DLA cells by trypan blue dye exclusion method and in vitro cytotoxicity on HeLa,HEp-2,HEpG-2,MCF-7, HT-29,Vero and NIH 3T3 cells by MTT assay.In vivo antitumor activity was studied on EAC and DLA tumor bearing mice.Activity was assessed by monitoring the mean survival time,effect on Hematological parameters,antioxidant enzyme levels and solid tumor volume.Results:MEIC exhibit potent in vitro cytotoxicity against all the tested cancer cell lines,but it was found to be safe on normal cells.The extract significantly(P<0.001) increase the mean survival time and also have a protective effect on the hemopoietic system at the tested dose levels(200 and 400 mg/kg). The extract prevented lipid peroxidation and restored the antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase,glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-s-transferase in the liver of tumor control animals.It also significandy(P<0.01) reduce the solid tumor volume.Conclusions:The results strongly support that MEIC shows potent antitumor and cytotoxic effects against EAC,DLA and human cancer cell lines.The extract prevents lipid peroxidation and promotes the enzymatic antioxidant defense system in tumor bearing animals which might be due to activities like scavenging of free radicals by the phytochemicals in MEIC.

In vitro anti oxidant activity and acute oral toxicity of Terminalia paniculata bark ethanolic extract on Sprague Dawley rats

Objective:To ensure the safety and evaluate the anti oxidant activity of Terminalia paniculata(T.paniculata)ethanolic extract in Sprague Dawley rats.Methods:The solvent extracts(hexane,ethyl acetate and ethanol)of T.paniculata were subjected to phytochemical analysis and their DPPH radical scavenging activity was assayed.The oral acute toxicity was evaluated using ethanolic extract of T.paniculata.Results:Ethyl acetate and elhanolic extracts showed more phytochemicals,whereas highest DPPH scavenging activity was found in ethanolic extract.In an acute toxicity study,T.paniculata ethanolic extract was orally administered(1000 mg/kg body weight)to rats and observed for72 h for any toxic symptoms and the dose was continued up to 14 d.On the 15th day rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected from control and test animals and analyzed for some biochemical parameters.We did not observe any behavioral changes in test groups in comparison with their controls.Also,there were no significant alterations in biochemical,Hematological(hemoglobin content and blood cells count)and liver function parameters such as serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase,serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,total proteins,albumin and bilirubin levels between T.paniculata ethanolic extract treated and normal control groups.Conclusions:Together our results demonstrated that T.paniculala ethanolic possessed potent antioxidant activity and it was safer and non toxic to rats even at higher doses and therefore could be well considered for further investigation for its medicinal and therapeutic efficacy.
