AIM:To investigate a novel phacoemulsification system“eVA NeXUS”(D.O.R.C.,Dutch Opthalmic Research Center)in comparison to the existing system“eVA”in clinical *** to compare both phacoemulsification systems in terms of efficiency,safety and postoperative inflammatory ***:In this study standardized cataract surgery was performed on both eyes of the study participant,using the“eVA system”(control group,n=20)on one eye and the“eVA NeXUS system”(intervention group,n=20)on the other *** patients with cataract LOCS Grading 1-3 and no accompanying eye diseases were included in this study.A total of 20 patients were included in this study,with each treatment arm including 20 *** surgery a 0.1 mL aqueous humor sample was collected 1min after phacoemulsification to measure the total prostaglanin e2 concentrations using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** endothelial cell count,visual and refractive outcomes,and anterior chamber flare were evaluated preoperatively,and 1d,1wk,and 3mo ***:There were no statistically significant differences between both groups regarding intraoperative safety parameters including effective phacoemulsification time(P=0.904),balanced saline solution flow(P=0.701)and total surgery time(P=0.565).Postoperative prostaglandin e2 levels,anterior chamber flare as well as endothelial cell loss tended to be lower in the NeXUS-Group,however not being statistically significant(P=0.718;0.164;0.486).Both systems provided similar clinical outcomes,regarding best corrected visual acuity and refractive parameters,showing no statistically significant differences between both ***:Both systems show a high level of safety and efficency with similar results in terms of safety parameters including postoperative inflammatory activity and endothelial cell loss as well as visual and refractive *** statistically not significant,the eVA NeXUS system tends to cause less postoperative inflammatio

Objectives: To gather and compare clinical and histologic information from individuals affected by hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HeD) and unaffected control subjects and to assess the value of these data in the diagnosis of HeD. Design: Volunteer subjects attending the 20th Annual Family Conference of the National Foundation for ectodermal Dysplasia answered a questionnaire and performed a starch-iodide sweat-function test. A subset of the subjects also donated samples of hair and 4-mm punch biopsy specimens of palmar and scalp skin. Specimens from each of these tests were assessed in a blinded fashion. Analysis was performed comparing affected and control subjects for each of the following parameters: quantification of eccrine structures in the skin biopsy specimens, analysis of hair sample trichograms for hair shaft defects, and qualitative classification of starchiodide palm-print sweat-function test results. Settings: An international conference for families and individuals with ectodermal dysplasias. Subjects: A total of 40 subjects were included in the final analysis: 15 unaffected control subjects and 25 subjects with HeD. Nine affected subjects and 9 unaffected subjects donated skin biopsy specimens. Main Outcome Measure: This study was designed to assess the value of 4 simple tests in supporting the diagnosis of HeD. Results: Investigators were blinded to group during analysis of the test samples. Trichogram examination identified 3 hair shaft abnormalities, with a slightly higher prevalence in the affected group: variable shaft thickness, trichorrhexis nodosa, and pili torti. The sensitivity and specificity for each of these findings was less than 40%. Starch-iodide paper palm imprints identified a higher likelihood of diminished or absent sweat in the affected group, but this test had a low sensitivity (44%) and an imperfect specificity (93%). examination of horizontally sectioned skin biopsy specimens from the palm were devoid of eccrine structures

Objective: To determine whether patients with moderate to severe acne who were treated with isotretinoin experienced significant increases in depressive symptoms over a 3- to 4- month period compared with patients who received conservative acne therapy. Design: Cohort study. Setting: Hospital- affiliated and community- based clinics in St Louis, Mo. Participants: One hundred thirty- two subjects aged 12 to 19 years with moderate to severe acne. Main Outcome Measures: Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for epidemiological StudiesDepressionScale(CeS- D),astandardizedself- reported instrument. Mean CeS- D scores were compared between treatment groups, as were the prevalence and incidence of scores suggestive of clinically significant depression (CeS- D score >16). Results: A total of 101 subjects completed the study. At follow- up, CeS- D scores (adjusted for baseline CeS- D score and sex of patient) suggestive of clinically significant depression were no more prevalent in the isotretinoin group than in the conservative therapy group. Similarly, the incidence (new onset) of depressive symptoms suggestive of clinical significance also was not significantly different between the treatment groups. Conclusions: The use of isotretinoin in the treatment of moderate- severe acne in adolescents did not increase symptoms of depression. On the contrary, treatment of acne either with conservative therapy or with isotretinoin was associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms.

Vapor transport growth of MoS2 nucleated on SiO2 patterns and graphene flakes

Vapor transport growth of atomically thin MoS2 layers on patterned substrates is investigated, as it is a step towards the self-aligned growth and formation of heterojunctions, which could be useful in future applications. enhanced formation of MoS2 flakes at the pattern edges is observed on both the substrates examined, namely, patterned thermal SiO2 on Si（100） and graphene flakes on SiO2. The diffusion driven growth leads to the formation of MoS2 monolayers （MLs） with sizes of tens of micrometers around the edges of SiO2 patterns. The growth mode and the optical quality of the MoS2 flakes can be controlled by varying the substrate temperature. Besides the lateral growth, 3R-type pyramids are obtained on prolonging the growth. Lateral MoS2-graphene heterostructures are obtained by using graphene flakes on SiO2 as a substrate.

Determining the dynamics of adsorbed liquids on nanoporous materials is crucial for a detailed understanding of interactions and processes on the solid-liquid interface in many materials and porous *** of the influence of the presence of paramagnetic species on the surface or within the porous matrices is essential for fundamental studies and industrial processes such as *** resonance methods,such as electron paramagnetic resonance(ePR),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and dynamic nuclear polarization(DNP),are powerful tools to address these questions and to quantify dy-namics,electron-nuclear interaction features and their relation to the physical-chemical parameters of the *** paper presents an NMR study of the dynamics of polar and nonpolar adsorbed liquids,represented by water,n-decane,deuterated water and nonane-d20,on the native silica surface as well as silica modified with vanadyl *** analysis of the frequency dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time is carried out by separating the intra-and intermolecular contributions,which were analyzed using reorientations mediated by translational displacements(RMTD)and force-free-hard-sphere(FFHS)models,respectively.

Side effects of budesonide in liver cirrhosis due to chronic autoimmune hepatitis: Influence of hepatic metabolism versus portosystemic shunts on a patient complicated with HCC

AIM:To investigate the systemic availability of budesonide in a patient with Child A cirrhosis due to autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary hepatocellular carcinoma,who developed serious side effects. MeTHODS:Serum levels of budesonide,6β-OH-budesonide and 16α-OH-prednisolon were measured by HPLC/MS/MS; portosystemic shunt-index (SI) was determined by 99mTc nuclear *** values were compared with a matched control patient without side effects. Background:Incubating birds must balance the conflict between thermal needs of the developing embryos and their self?maintenance needs for *** Chinese Grouse (Tetrastes sewerzowi) lives in high mountain conifer forests and faces energy stress,cold environment,and predation *** might adjust incubation rhythm to adapt to these constraints. Methods:Two methods were used to investigate egg laying and incubation pattern of the Chinese Grouse;25 nests were monitored by data loggers and 12 nests by infrared video cameras. Results:Female Chinese Grouses usually laid an egg every 2 *** incubation period was 28-31 days. Overall incubation constancy for Chinese Grouse was 93%. The females took 5.0 recesses per day and 34% of all 1696 recesses were taken in the crepuscular period. The average recess duration was 20.3 min. Females took more and shorter recesses in the latter part of *** females who allocated more time to foraging had a higher reproductive success. Conclusions:Probably due to its high egg/body mass ratio,the Chinese Grouse has a long laying interval of 49 h. We suggest that,due to energy stress,females have relatively more recesses and they increase the number of recesses as incubation *** compensate for the embryos'thermal needs, they extend the incubation period and shorten the recess duration in this cold environment.

Systemic RNAi in western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, does not involve transitive pathways

Western corn rootworm （WCR, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte） is highly sensitive to orally delivered double-stranded RNA （dsRNA）. RNAi in WCR is systemic and spreads throughout the insect body. This raises the question whether transitive RNAi is a mechanism that functions in WCR to amplify the RNAi response via production of secondary siRNA. Secondary siRNA production is achieved through RNA-dependent RNA polymerase （RdRP） activity in other eukaryotic organisms, but RdRP has not been identified in WCR and any other insects. This study visualized the spread of the RNAi- mediated knockdown of Dr v-ATPase C mRNA throughout the WCR gut and other tissues using high-sensitivity branched DNA in situ hybridization. Furthermore, we did not detect either secondary siRNA production or transitive RNAi in WCR through siRNA sequence profile analysis. Nucleotide mismatched sequences introduced into either the sense or antisense strand of v-ATPase C dsRNAs were maintained in siRNAs derived from WCR fed with the mismatched dsRNAs in a strand specific manner. The distribution of all siRNAs was restricted to within the original target sequence regions, which may indicate the lack of new dsRNA synthesis leading to production of secondary siRNA. Thus, the systemic spread of RNAi in WCR may be derived from the original dsRNA molecules taken up from the gut lumen. These results indicate that the initial dsRNA dose is important for a lethal systemic RNAi response in WCR and have implications in developing effective dsRNA traits to control WCR and in resistance management to prolong the durability of RNAi trait technology.
