Detection of oxidative stress and DNA damage in freshwater snail Lymnea leuteola exposed to profenofos

Extensive production and use of organophosphate pesticide in agriculture,has risen concerned about its ecotoxicity and risk assessment of insecticides,which are more ***,the present investigation was aimed to study the induction of oxidative stress and DNA damage by organophosphate insecticide profenofos(PFF)in freshwater snail Lymnea luteola(***).The median lethal value(96 h LC50)of PFF was estimated as 1.26 mg/L for *** in a semi-static system and on the basis of LC50 value three concentrations viz.,0.126(1/10 of LC50,Sublethal I),0.63(1/2 of LC50,Sublethal II)and 0.84 mg/L(2/3 of LC50,Sublethal III)were *** were exposed to above-mentioned concentrations of PFF along with solvent control(acetone)and negative control for 96 *** haemolymph was collected at 24 and 96 h of after *** heamolymph of PFF exposed snail,lipid peroxide,glutathione reduced glutathione S transferase and superoxide dismutase activities at the tested concentrations significantly differ from those in the *** genotoxicity induced in hemocytes of treated snails was measured by alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis *** data of this experiment demonstrated significantly enhancement of oxidative stress and DNA damage in the treated snails as compared to ***,we observed statistically significant correlations of ROS with DNA damage(%tail DNA)(R^(2)=0.9708)for 24 h and DNA damage(R^(2)=0.9665)for 96 *** of the current experiment can be useful in risk evaluation of PFF among aquatic *** study confirmed the use of comet assay for in vivo laboratory experiments using freshwater snail for selecting the toxic potential of industrial chemicals and environmental contaminants.

Medical treatment of inflammatory punctual stenosis monitored by anterior segment optical coherence tomography

AIM:To evaluate the role of medical treatment in the management of inflammatory punctum stenosis guided by spectral domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography(OCT).METHODS:This prospective study included 60 patients complaining of epiphora due to inflammatory punctual *** were divided into two groups:Group A(30 patients)treated with a combination of preservative free hydrocortisone sodium phosphate 3.35 mg/m L eye drops,and preservative free artificial tears based on sodium hyaluronate,polyethylene and propylene Glycol;Group B(30 patients)treated with the same preservative free artificial tears *** normal subjects were included for comparison of pre-treatment anatomical *** starting treatment,all patients underwent anterior segment assessment including slit lamp examination,measurement of intraocular pressure(IOP),fluorescein dye disappearance test,and measurement of the outer punctum diameter(OPD)by Spectral domain anterior segment *** assessments were repeated at each follow up done at 1 and 3 mo later,together with subjective evaluation of patient’s satisfaction of the treatment outcome by simple rating ***:Punctual diameter increased significantly with treatment in both groups(P<0.0001);although the widening was more in Group A as compared to group B(16.2%vs 8%of the original punctual size,mean difference of 28.933μm,P=0.0076).Subjective satisfaction with treatment outcome was also better in group A(70%vs 40%,Chi-square P=0.0397).CONCLUSION:A combination of preservative free steroid eye drops and artificial tears causes significant widening of inflammed stenotic punctae and improvement of the associated epiphora.

Sorption of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) on lignin

The present study describes the use of two commercially available lignins,namely,alkali and organosolv lignin,for the removal of2,4-dinitroanisole（DNAN）,a chemical widely used by the military and the dye industry,from *** of DNAN on bothlignins reached equilibrium within 10 hr and followed pseudo second-order kinetics with sorption being faster with alkali than withorganosolv lignin,i.e.k2 10.3 and 0.3 g/（mg·hr）,*** a separate study we investigated sorption of DNAN between 10 and40 C and found that the removal of DNAN by organosolv lignin increased from 0.8 to 7.5 mg/g but reduced slightly from 8.5 to 7.6mg/g in the case of alkali *** isotherms for either alkali or organosolv lignin best fitted Freundlich equation with enthalpyof formation,H0 equaled to 14 or 80 kJ/*** help understand DNAN sorption mechanisms we characterized the two lignins byelemental analysis,BET nitrogen adsorption-desorption and 31P *** in elemental compositions between the two ligninsindicated that alkali lignin should have more sites（O-and S-containing functionalities） for *** BET surface area andcalculated total pore volume of alkali lignin were almost 10 times greater than that of organosolv lignin suggesting that alkali ligninshould provide more sites for sorption.31P NMR showed that organosolv lignin contains more phenolic-OH groups than alkali lignin,i.e.,70% and 45%,*** variations in the type of OH groups between the two lignins might have affected the strength ofH-bonding between DNAN and the type of lignin used.

PID Controller Tuning for a Multivariable Glass Furnace Process by Genetic Algorithm

Standard genetic algorithms （SGAs） are investigated to optimise discrete-time proportional-integral-derivative （PID） con- troller parameters, by three tuning approaches, for a multivariable glass furnace process with loop interaction. Initially, standard genetic algorithms （SGAs） are used to identify control oriented models of the plant which are subsequently used for controller optimisa- tion. An individual tuning approach without loop interaction is considered first to categorise the genetic operators, cost functions and improve searching boundaries to attain the desired performance criteria. The second tuning approach considers controller parameters optimisation with loop interaction and individual cost functions. While, the third tuning approach utilises a modified cost function which includes the total effect of both controlled variables, glass temperature and excess oxygen. This modified cost function is shown to exhibit improved control robustness and disturbance rejection under loop interaction.

Unlike most fluids,granular materials include coexisting solid,liquid or gaseous regions,which produce a rich variety of complex *** flows of grains driven by gravity down inclines occur in nature and in *** describe the granular flow on an inclined surface,several studies were carried *** can cite in particular the description of Saint-Venant which considers a dry granular flow,without cohesion and it only takes into account the substance-substrate friction,this model proposes a simplified form of the granular flow,which depends on the one side on the angle of inclination of the substrate with respect to the horizontal plane and on the other side on the thickness of the substance *** numerical simulation we have developed is first based on the Saint-Venant model,it allowed us to visualize the variation of the speed according to the thickness of the substance(from 0 to H)and to deduce the average speed of the substance on an inclined ***,this restrictive model does not take into account the effect of particle friction on the flow and considers that the thickness H is *** make our simulation more realistic,we opted for the Savage-Hatter *** took into account the variation of the thickness on the particles speed,in addition we have studied the effect of the variation of many parameters on the granular flow,namely the temperature and the roughness of the substrate,the density and the compactness of the substance,we found that the speed of the particles increases and the treatment time decreases with an increase in temperature.

BACKGROUND Vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) include Ch Ad Ox1-SARS-COV-2(Astra Zeneca),***2.S(Janssen),m RNA-1273(Moderna),BNT162b2(Pfizer),BBIBP-Cor V(Sinopharm),Corona Vac(Sinovac),and Bharat Biotech BBV152(Covaxin).AIM To find the association between COVID-19 vaccines and myocardial infarction(MI).METHODS This is a systematic review that involved searching databases such as MEDLINE,EMBASE,and Pak Medi Net after making a search strategy using Me SH and Emtree *** criteria were set,and studies having no mention of MI as a complication of COVID-19 vaccination,protocols,genetic studies,and animal studies were *** was extracted using a predesigned extraction table,and 29 studies were selected after screening and applying the eligibility *** The majority of studies mentioned Astra Zeneca(18 studies) followed by Pfizer(14 studies) and Moderna(9 studies) in subjects reporting MI after *** of all the studies,69% reported MI cases after the first COVID-19 vaccination dose and 14% after the second,44% reported ST-segment elevation MI,and 26% reported non-ST-segment elevation *** mortality rate was 29% after *** In conclusion,many studies linked MI to COVID-19 vaccinations,but no definitive association could be found.

Control of animal brucellosis: the Malaysian experience

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease characterized by reproductive failure in animals and undulent fever in humans. In cattle, it is caused by Brucella abortus while in goats by Brucella melitensis, the main cause of brucellosis in humans. Brucellosis in livestock has been associated with importation of animals from breeder herd of unknown disease status. The prevalence of bovine brucellosis Brucella abortus in 2014 ranged between 1%-2% in Thailand and Indonesia, and 4%-5% in Malaysia and Myanmar. Prevalence of goat brucellosis Brucella melitensis is approximately 1% in Malaysia and Thailand. ‘Test-and-slaughter' is the general policy against brucellosis adopted by most ASEAN countries to eradicate the disease. Under this program, the Rose Bengal Plate Test(RBPT) is used as the screening test to identify infected farm/herd while the Complement Fixation Test(CFT) is the confirmatory test. The test-and-slaughter eradication strategy that was implemented since 1979 had managed to keep the prevalence rate to less than 5%, from 3.3% in 1979, 0.23% in 1988, 1% in 1998 and 5% in 2016. The test-and-slaughter program seemed effective in reducing the prevalence of brucellosis but was unable to eradicate the disease due to several factors, which include failure to locate and identify the remaining affected animals and to control their movement, importation of breeder animals from non-brucellosis free countries and lack of participation by the farmers following unrealiable test results. To support the eradication policy, research activities since 1980 s have suggested combinations of serological tests to improve diagnosis while surveillance should be focused on hotspots areas. The prevalence can be further reduced by strictly sourcing breeder animals from brucella-free areas or countries.

Impact of preterm birth and low birth weight on medical conditions, medication use and mortality among neonates: a prospective observational cohort study

Background There is a paucity of studies conducted in India on neonatal outcomes of preterm birth and low birth ***,we aimed to assess the impact of preterm birth and low birth weight on medical conditions,medication use and mortality among *** A prospective observational cohort study was conducted at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) over a period of 9 *** of either sex,admitted to NICU and who received at least one medication were enrolled in the *** and demographic data,reason(s) for NICU admission,diagnoses,medications prescribed,medication-related problems,discharge status and the direct medical cost were documented and *** Four hundred and five neonates Were included in the study:60.5% were boys,32.7% were preterm and 44.2% were born *** sepsis (n =125,16.7%),unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (n =83,11.1%) and respiratory distress syndrome (n =62,8.3%) were the most common medical conditions and were significantly more common among preterm and underweight *** half of the medications prescribed were anti-infectives for systemic use (n =1310,47.4%).The mean number of medications received by neonates increased from term to extremely preterm (5.2-15.0) and normal birth weight to extremely low birth weight (5.0-14.9).Mortality rate was significantly higher among extremely preterm (66.7%),and very preterm (15.2%) neonates compared to term (2.9%) *** median direct medical cost for NICU admission was INR 21,430 (USD 331).Conclusion Medical conditions,medications prescribed and mortality rate were significantly higher among preterm and underweight neonates admitted to NICU.
