Dear Editor,The Portrait of Dora Maar(92 cm×65 cm)painted by Pablo Picasso(1937)is an aesthetic masterpiece in the world(Brigitte,1996).Picasso paints Dora seating on a chair in frontal view with an off-set profile and disjunctive facial features(André,1976):that is,Dora’s nose becomes an extension of her face on which the'far'eye is seen looking straight at us.Why did Picasso paint his lover Dora in such a tortured style?

Fibrinogen is a key protein involved in coagulation and its deposition on blood vessel walls plays an important role in the pathology of atherosclerosis.Although the causes of fibrinogen(fibrin)deposition have been studied in depth,little is known about the relationship between fibrinogen deposition and reactive carbonyl compounds(RCCs),compounds which are produced and released into the blood and react with plasma protein especially under conditions of oxidative stress and inflammation.here,we investigated the effect of glycolaldehyde on the activity and deposition of fibrinogen compared with the common RCCs acrolein,methylglyoxal,glyoxal and malondialdehyde.At the same concentration(1 mmol/L),glycolaldehyde and acrolein had a stronger suppressive effect on fibrinogen activation than the other three RCCs.Fibrinogen aggregated when it was respectively incubated with glycolaldehyde and the other RCCs,as demonstrated by SDS-PAGE,electron microscopy and intrinsic fluorescence intensity measurements.Staining with Congo Red showed that glycolaldehyde-and acrolein-fibrinogen distinctly formed amyloid-like aggregations.Furthermore,the five RCCs,particularly glycolaldehyde and acrolein,delayed human plasma coagulation.Only glycolaldehyde showed a markedly suppressive effect on fibrinogenesis,none did the other four RCCs when their physiological blood concentrations were employyed,respectively.Taken together,it is glycolaldehyde that suppresses fibrinogenesis and induces protein aggregation most effectively,suggesting a putative pathological process for fibrinogen(fibrin)deposition in the blood.

DEAR EDITOR,Rhesus monkeys(Macaca mulatta)are valuable experimental animals for studies on neurodegenerative diseases due to their evolutionarily close relationship to humans(Zhang et al.,2014).Rhesus monkeys also display similar hallmarks of aging and neurodegeneration as humans,including formation of senile plaques in the brain(Beckman et al.,2019;Paspalas et al.,2018).

Living organisms are exposed to the geomagnetic field （GMF） throughout their lifespan. Elimination of the GMF, resulting in a hypogeomagnetic field （HMF）, leads to central nervous system dysfunction and abnormal development in animals. However, the cellular mecha-nisms underlying these effects have not been identified so far. here, we show that exposure to an HMF （〈200 nT）, produced by a magnetic field shielding chamber, pro- motes the proliferation of neural progenitor/stem cells （NPCslNSCs） from C57BL/6 mice. Following seven-day HMF-exposure, the primary neurospheres （NSs） were significantly larger in size, and twice more NPCslNSCs were harvested from neonatal NSs, when compared to the GMF controls. The self-renewal capacity and multi- potency of the NSs were maintalned, as HMF-exposed NSs were posltlve for NSC markers （Nestin and Sox2）, and could differentiate into neurons and astrocytelglial cells and be passaged continuously. In addition, adult mice exposed to the HMF for one month were observed to have a greater number of proliferative cells In the subventrlcular zone. These flndlngs indicate that continuous HMF-exposure increases the proliferation of NPCslNSCs, In vitro and in vlvo. HMF-dlsturbed NPCs/NSCs production probably affects brain development and function, which provides a novel clue for elucidating the cellular mechanisms of the bio.HMF response.

AIM：To investigate the risk factor of primary open angle glaucoma（POAG）,which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.An abnormally high level of endogenous formaldehyde（FA） has recently been found correlated with cell death and neurodegenerative disease,raising the possibility of a putative correlation of abnormal endogenous FA with POAG.· METHODS：Thirty-four elderly patients with POAG and sixteen healthy controls were enrolled.Glaucomatous visual defects were present at both the functional（visual field） and structural[retinal nerve fiber layer（RNFL）thickness]levels.Morning urine samples were obtained and were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography（HPLC） to detect the endogenous FA level in a double blind manner.· RESULTS：Patients with POAG（P 〈0.05） had significantly higher urine FA levels.The urine FA level of patients with severe visual field defects[mean deviation（MD）≥12 dB]was significantly（P〈0.001） greater than that of patients with mild to moderate defects（MD〈12 dB）.By optical coherence tomography（OCT）,the superior and inferior RNFL thickness of POAG group was significantly（P〈0.001） thinner than in controls.Furthermore,the superior and inferior thinning of the RNFL was correlated with the elevation of urine FA concentration.CONCLUSION：Endogenous FA level is positively correlated with the neuronal defects of POAG.

Accumulative evidence has shown the adverse effects of a geomagnetic field shielded condition, so called a hypomagnetic field （HMF）, on the metabolic processes and oxidative stress in animals and cells. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we evaluate the role of HMF on the regulation of cellular reactive oxygen species （ROS） in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. We found that HMF exposure led to ROS decrease, and that restoring the decrease by additional H2O2 rescued the HMF-enhanced cell proliferation. The measurements on ROS related indexes, including total anti-oxidant capacity, H2O2 and superoxide anion levels, and superoxide dismutase （SOD） activity and expres- sion, indicated that the HMF reduced H2O2 production and inhibited the activity of CuZn-SOD. Moreover, the HMF accelerated the denaturation of CuZn-SOD as well as enhanced aggregation of CuZn-SOD protein, in vitro. Our findings indicate that CuZn-SOD is able to response to the HMF stress and suggest it a mediator of the HMF effect.

The profound influence of microbiota in cancer initiation and progression has been under the spotlight for years,leading to numerous researches on cancer microbiome entering clinical evaluation.As promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets,the critical involvement of microbiota in cancer clinical practice has been increasingly appreciated.here,recent progress in this field is reviewed.We describe the potential of tumor-associated microbiota as effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers,respectively.In addition,we highlight the relationship between microbiota and the therapeutic efficacy,toxicity,or side effects of commonly utilized treatments for cancer,including chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and immunotherapy.Given that microbial factors influence the cancer treatment outcome,we further summarize some dominating microbial interventions and discuss the hidden risks of these strategies.This review aims to provide an overview of the applications and advancements of microbes in cancer clinical relevance.

Noncoding RNAs（ncRNAs） are one of the major components of the brain transcriptome.However,the roles of many ncRNAs are unclear,and the regulation of ncRNA expression is even much less known.By analyzing more than 50 thousands of non-coding transcripts identified from the human fetal brain,high sequence conservation was found in the flanking 5’ or 3’ of the genomic loci of the ncRNAs.we applied the genome of Xenopus tropicalis to search for ncRNA candidates adjacent with the conserved genomic loci,all four transcripts were detected in Xenopus tropicalis and Xenopus laevis.Multiple transcripts of those ncRNAs were also detected by Northern blot and a possible precursor tRNA and a small RNA with 20nt were detected in the transcripts of Xenc034.Moreover,in situ hybridization of whole mount and tissue sections showed this transcript was expressed extensively in brain and spinal cord in a stage-dependent manner.Downregulation of the expression of xenc034 caused to the decrease of cell proliferation in the neural plate during early neurulation and with a phenotype of spina bifida at the stage of tadpole.These results not only suggested the noval class of nocoding RNAs had a biological role for the development of neural tissues,but also provide clues to reveal the expression regulation of ncRNAs.Moreover,the approach apphed here could be used for novel ncRNA prediction and verification as well.
