Modeling subcortical ischemic white matter injury in rodents:unmet need for a breakthrough in translational research

Subcortical ischemic white matter injury(SIWMI),pathological correlate of white matter hyperintensities or leukoaraiosis on magnetic resonance imaging,is a common cause of cognitive decline in *** its high prevalence,it remains unknown how various components of the white matter degenerate in response to chronic *** incomplete knowledge is in part due to a lack of adequate animal *** current review introduces various SIWMI animal models and aims to scrutinize their advantages and disadvantages primarily in regard to the pathological manifestations of white matter *** SIWMI animal models are categorized into 1)chemically induced SIWMI models,2)vascular occlusive SIWMI models,and 3)SIWMI models with comorbid vascular risk *** induced models display consistent lesions in predetermined areas of the white matter,but the abrupt evolution of lesions does not appropriately reflect the progressive pathological processes in human white matter *** occlusive SIWMI models often do not exhibit white matter lesions that are sufficiently unequivocal to be *** combined with comorbid vascular risk factors(specifically hypertension),however,they can produce progressive and definitive white matter lesions including diffuse rarefaction,demyelination,loss of oligodendrocytes,and glial activation,which are by far the closest to those found in human white matter hyperintensities ***,considerable surgical mortality and unpredictable natural deaths during a follow-up period would necessitate further refinements in these *** the meantime,in vitro SIWMI models that recapitulate myelinated white matter track may be utilized to study molecular mechanisms of the ischemic white matter *** in vivo and in vitro SIWMI models will contribute in a complementary manner to making a breakthrough in developing effective treatment to prevent progression of white matter hyperintensities.

Obturator hernia-a rare etiology of lateral thigh pain:A case report

BACKGROUND Lateral thigh pain is a common complaint in patients visiting a pain ***,we describe the case of a patient with lateral thigh pain caused by an obturator *** SUMMARY An 83-year-old woman visited the emergency room with suddenly aggravated right lateral thigh *** resonance imaging of the thigh revealed no abnormal findings in the lateral thigh ***,an obturator hernia between the pectineus and obturator externus muscles was observed by *** computed tomography revealed a herniated small bowel with an incarceration point at the right obturator canal and a dilated loop of the small bowel *** of the right inguinal region revealed a distended bowel loop in the right pectineus *** Our report provides clinicians with information that an obturator hernia can cause lateral thigh pain.

Design of 512-bit logic process-based single poly EEPROM IP

A single poly EEPROM cell circuit sharing the deep N-well of a cell array was designed using the logic process. The proposed cell is written by the FN tunneling scheme and the cell size is 41.26 μm2, about 37% smaller than the conventional cell. Also, a small-area and low-power 512-bit EEPROM IP was designed using the proposed cells which was used for a 900 MHz passive UHF RFID tag chip. To secure the operation of the cell proposed with 3.3 V devices and the reliability of the used devices, an EEPROM core circuit and a DC-DC converter were proposed. Simulation results for the designed EEPROM IP based on the 0.18μm logic process show that the power consumptions in read mode, program mode and erase mode are 11.82, 25.15, and 24.08 ~tW, respectively, and the EEPROM size is 0.12 mm2.

In this paper, the concepts of falling fuzzy(implicative, associative) filters of lattice implication algebras based on the theory of falling shadows and fuzzy sets are presented at first. And then the relations between fuzzy(implicative, associative) filters and falling fuzzy(implicative, associative) filters are provided. In particular, we put forward an open question on a kind of falling fuzzy filters of lattice implication algebras. Finally, we apply falling fuzzy inference relations to lattice implication algebras and obtain some related results.

Estimation of Turbulent Sensible Heat and Momentum Fluxes over a Heterogeneous Urban Area Using a Large Aperture Scintillometer

The accurate determination of surface-layer turbulent fluxes over urban areas is critical to understanding urban boundary layer （UBL） evolution. In this study, a remote-sensing technique using a large aperture scintillometer （LAS） was investigated to estimate surface-layer turbulent fluxes over a highly heterogeneous urban area. The LAS system, with an optical path length of 2.1 km, was deployed in an urban area characterized by a complicated land-use mix （residential houses, water body, bare ground, etc.）. The turbulent sensible heat （QH） and momentum fluxes （z） were estimated from the scintillation measurements obtained from the LAS system during the cold season. Three-dimensional LAS footprint modeling was introduced to identify the source areas （＂footprint＂） of the estimated turbulent fluxes. The analysis results showed that the LAS-derived turbulent fluxes for the highly heterogeneous urban area revealed reasonable temporal variation during daytime on clear days, in comparison to the land-surface process-resolving numerical modeling. A series of sensitivity tests indicated that the overall uncertainty in the LAS-derived daytime QH was within 20%-30% in terms of the influence of input parameters and the non- dimensional similarity function for the temperature structure function parameter, while the estimation errors in z were less sensitive to the factors of influence, except aerodynamic roughness length. The 3D LAS footprint modeling characterized the source areas of the LAS-derived turbulent fluxes in the heterogeneous urban area, revealing that the representative spatial scales of the LAS system deployed with the 2.1 km optical path distance ranged from 0.2 to 2 km2 （a ＂micro-a scale＂）, depending on local meteorological conditions.

Long term outcome of antiviral therapy in patients with hepatitis B associated decompensated cirrhosis

AIM To investigate survival rate and incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in patients with decompensated cirrhosis in the antiviral *** We used the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment. Korea's health insurance system is a public single-payer system. The study population consisted of 286871 patients who were prescribed hepatitis B antiviral therapy for the first time between 2007 and 2014 in accordance with the insurance ***, 48365 antiviral treatment-na?ve patients treated between 2008 and 2009 were included, and each had a follow-up period ≥ 5 years. Data were analyzed for the 1 st decompensated chronic hepatitis B(CHB) and treatment-na?ve patients(n = 7166). RESULTS The mean patient age was 43.5 years. The annual mortality rates were 2.4%-19.1%, and 5-year cumulative mortality rate was 32.6% in 1^(st) decompensated CHB treatment-na?ve subjects. But the annual mortality rates sharply decreased to 3.4%(2.4%-4.9%, 2-5 year) after one year of antiviral treatment. Incidence of HCC at first year was 14.3%, the annual incidence of HCC decreased to 2.5%(1.8%-3.7%, 2-5 year) after one year. 5-year cumulative incidence of HCC was 24.1%. Recurrence rate of decompensated event was 46.9% at first year, but the annual incidence of second decompensation events in decompensated CHB treatment-na?ve patients was 3.4%(2.1%-5.4%, 2-5 year) after one year antiviral treatment. 5-year cumulative recurrence rate of decompensated events was 60.6%. Meanwhile, 5-year cumulative mortality rate was 3.1%, and 5-year cumulative incidence of HCC was 11.5% in compensated CHB treatment-na?ve *** Long term outcome of decompensated cirrhosis treated with antiviral agent improved much, and incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and mortality sharply decreased after one year treatment.

Most microfluidic separation techniques rely largely on object size as a separation *** ability to separate micro-objects based on their shape is crucial in various biomedical and chemical ***,we develop an ondemand,label-free acoustofluidic method to separate prolate ellipsoids from spherical microparticles based on traveling surface acoustic wave-induced acoustic radiation force and *** freely rotating non-spherical microobjects were aligned under the progressive acoustic field by the counterrotating radiation torque,and the major axis of the prolate ellipsoids was parallel to the progressive wave *** specific alignment of the ellipsoidal particles resulted in a reduction in the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the wave *** a consequence,the acoustic backscattering decreased,resulting in a decreased magnitude of the radiation *** the variation in radiation force,which depended on the micro-object morphology enabled the acoustofluidic shape-based *** conducted numerical simulations for the wave scattering of spherical and prolate objects to elucidate the working mechanism underlying the proposed method.A series of experiments with polystyrene microspheres,prolate ellipsoids,and peanut-shaped microparticles were performed for *** quantitative analysis of the separation efficiency,we confirmed the high purity and high recovery rate of the proposed acoustofluidic shapebased separation of *** a bioparticle,we utilize Thalassiosira eccentrica to perform shape-based separation,as the species has a variety of potential applications in drug delivery,biosensing,nanofabrication,bioencapsulation and immunoisolation.

BACKGROUND The high prevalence of human papillomavirus(HPV)infection in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)is well established,and p16 expression is a strong ***-related tumors exhibit unique mechanisms that target p16 and p53 ***,research on HPV prevalence and the combined predictive value of p16 and p53 expression in head and neck cutaneous SCC(HNCSCC),particularly in Asian populations,remains *** retrospective study surveyed 62 patients with HNSCC(2011-2020),excluding those with facial warts or other skin *** To explore the prevalence of HPV and the predictive value of p16 and p53 expression in HNCSCC in Asian *** All patients underwent wide excision and *** staining for HPV,p16,and p53 yielded positive and negative *** relevance of each marker was investigated by categorizing the tumor locations into high-risk and middle-risk zones based on recurrence *** Of the 62 patients,20(32.26%)were male,with an average age of 82.27 years(range 26-103 years).High-risk included 19 cases(30.65%),with the eyelid and lip being the most common sites(five cases,8.06%).Middle-risk included 43 cases(69.35%),with the cheek being the most common(29 cases,46.77%).The p16 expression was detected in 24 patients(38.71%),p53 expression in 42 patients(72.58%),and HPV in five patients(8.06%).No significant association was found between p16 expression and the presence of HPV(P>0.99),with a positive predictive value of 8.33%.CONCLUSION This study revealed that p16,a surrogate HPV marker in oropharyngeal SCC,is not reliable in HNCSCC,providing valuable insights for further research in Asian populations.

BACKGROUND Post-polypectomy electrocoagulation syndrome(PPES)can occur after colonoscopic polypectomy and is usually treated conservatively with a positive ***,there can be cases with complications *** SUMMARY A 58-year-old woman,who had no previous medical history,visited the Emergency Department of another hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain and fever,1 d after multiple colonoscopic *** abdominopelvic computed tomography(CT)scan demonstrated colo-colonic intussusception,and she was transferred to our hospital to consider an *** showed colocolonic intussusception with PPES and no evidence of *** physical examination showed localized mild tenderness on the right sided *** patient fasted and was admitted for treatment with intravenous antibiotics(piperacillin/tazobactam 4.5 g each 8 h,ornidazole 500 mg each 12 h).After admission,the symptoms got better and a follow-up CT scan demonstrated resolution of the PPES and *** patient was discharged on hospital day *** Colo-colic intussusception can occur with PPES,and it can be properly treated conservatively.
