A combination strategy of functionalized polymer coating with Ta ion implantation for multifunctional and biodegradable vascular stents

Biodegradable stents made of magnesium(Mg)and its alloys have been developed to minimize persistent inflammation or in-stent restenosis,which are the main problems for permanent ***,their rapid corrosion behavior under physiological conditions leads to poor vascular compatibility and premature structural failure,which remains an important unsolved clinical ***,we demonstrate a new strategy for solving this problem by combining poly(ether imide)(PEI)coating and subsequent tantalum(Ta)ion *** PEI coating covers the whole surface of the Mg stent uniformly via a spray coating technique and provides Mg with superior corrosion resistance and stable sirolimus-carrying *** ion implantation is conducted by a sputtering-based plasma immersion ion implantation technique only onto the luminal surface of the PEI-coated Mg *** extremely short processing time(<30 s)permits preservation of the PEI coating’s corrosion protection ability and sirolimus loading *** addition,a Ta-implanted skin layer that forms on the topmost surface of the PEI coating plays an effective role in not only preventing a rapid release of sirolimus from the surface but also improving the PEI coating’s surface *** on in vitro cellular response and blood compatibility tests,Ta ion implantation leads to the improvement of endothelial cell adhesion/proliferation and suppression of platelet adhesion/activation regardless of sirolimus *** results indicate that the combination of PEI coating and Ta ion implantation has significant innovative potential to provide excellent vascular compatibility and prevent in-stent restenosis and thrombosis.

In recent years,pure iron(Fe)has attracted significant attention as a promising biodegradable orthopedic implant material due to its excellent mechanical and biological ***,in physiological conditions,Fe has an extremely slow degradation rate with localized and irregular degradation,which is problematic for practical *** this study,we developed a novel combination of a nanostructured surface topography and galvanic reaction to achieve uniform and accelerated degradation of an Fe *** target-ion induced plasma sputtering(TIPS)technique was applied on the Fe implant to introduce biologically compatible and electrochemically noble tantalum(Ta)onto its surface and develop surface nano-galvanic *** tests revealed that the uniformly distributed nano-galvanic corrosion cells of the TIPS-treated sample(nano Ta-Fe)led to relatively uniform and accelerated surface degradation compared to that of bare ***,the mechanical properties of nano Ta-Fe remained almost constant during a long-term in vitro immersion test(~40 weeks).Biocompatibility was also assessed on surfaces of bare Fe and nano Ta-Fe using in vitro osteoblast responses through direct and indirect contact assays and an in vivo rabbit femur medullary cavity implantation *** results revealed that nano Ta-Fe not only enhanced cell adhesion and spreading on its surface,but also exhibited no signs of cellular or tissue *** results demonstrate the immense potential of Ta-implanted surface nanostructures as an effective solution for the practical application of Fe-based orthopedic implants,ensuring long-term biosafety and clinical efficacy.

Porous titanium(Ti)scaffolds have been extensively utilized as bone substitute scaffolds due to their superior biocompatibility and excellent mechanical ***,naturally formed TiO2 on the surface limits fast *** biomolecules have been widely utilized to overcome this issue;however,homogeneous porous Ti scaffolds could not simultaneously deliver multiple biomolecules that have different release *** this study,functionally graded porous Ti scaffolds(FGPTs)with dense inner and porous outer parts were fabricated using a two-body combination and densification *** with growth factor(BMP-2)and antibiotics(TCH)exhibited suitable mechanical properties as bone substituting material and presented good structural *** release of BMP-2 was considerably prolonged,whereas the release of TCH was comparable to that of homogenous porous titanium scaffolds(control group).The osteogenic differentiation obtained using FGPTs was maintained due to the prolonged release of *** antimicrobial properties of these scaffolds were verified using *** in terms of prior release *** addition,various candidates for graded porous Ti scaffolds with altered pore characteristics were presented.

Poly(ether imide)(PEI)has shown satisfactory corrosion protection capability with good adhesion strength as a coating for magnesium(Mg),a potential candidate of biodegradable orthopedic implant ***,its innate hydrophobic property causes insufficient osteoblast affinity and a lack of ***,we modify the physical and chemical properties of a PEI-coated Mg implant.A plasma immersion ion implantation technique is combined with direct current(DC)magnetron sputtering to introduce biologically compatible tantalum(Ta)onto the surface of the PEI *** PEI-coating layer is not damaged during this process owing to the extremely short processing time(30 s),retaining its high corrosion protection property and adhesion *** Ta-implanted layer(roughly 10-nm-thick)on the topmost PEI surface generates long-term surface hydrophilicity and favorable surface conditions for pre-osteoblasts to adhere,proliferate,and ***,in a rabbit femur study,the Ta/PEI-coated Mg implant demonstrates significantly enhanced bone tissue affinity and osseointegration *** results indicate that Ta/PEI-coated Mg is promising for achieving early mechanical fixation and long-term success in biodegradable orthopedic implant applications.

Effective Denoising Architecture for Handling Multiple Noises

Object detection,one of the core research topics in computer vision,is extensively used in various industrial *** there have been many studies of daytime images where objects can be easily detected,there is relatively little research on nighttime *** the case of nighttime,various types of noises,such as darkness,haze,and light blur,deteriorate image ***,an appropriate process for removing noise must precede to improve object detection *** there are many studies on removing individual noise,only a few studies handle multiple noises *** this paper,we pro-pose a convolutional denoising autoencoder(CDAE)-based architecture trained on various types of *** also present various composing modules for each noise to improve object detection performance for night *** the exclusively dark(ExDark)Image dataset,experimental results show that the Sequentialfiltering architecture showed superior mean average precision(mAP)compared to other architectures.

Design,Fabrication,and Analysis of Flapping and Folding Wing Mechanism for a Robotic Bird

Emulating periodic main wing movement of a bird for generating lift and thrust remains a significant challenge in developing a robotic *** sequences of main wing motion are comprised of flapping,folding,bending,and *** this paper,we concentrate on the flapping and folding motion,and design two wing mechanisms based on a 4-bar linkage structure:one is only for Flapping Motion(FM)and the other is for simultaneous Flapping and Folding Motion(FFM)during a wing *** derive relationships between length and angle of links to analyze kinematic characteristics of the mechanisms and conduct an optimization to select the length parameters of links that allow maximization of the flapping *** run a simulation to confirm the performance of the optimized parameters by examining physical properties,and fabricate two wing mechanisms *** particular,the folding motion is achieved without using an additional *** measurements to investigate a lift profile of each mechanism and their quantitative comparison of the performance of both types confirm the benefits of the folding motion in the perspectives of wing frequency and *** expect that our kinematic formulation,design procedures,and comparative measurement results can help develop a wing mechanism to create a truly biomimetic robotic bird.

BACKGROUND Although fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography(FDG-PET/CT)is widely used for diagnosis and follow-up of large sized vessel vasculitis,it is still not widely used for small to medium sized vessel *** SUMMARY This is the case of a 68-year-old male who presented at the emergency department complaining of fever,myalgia,and bilateral leg pain of over two weeks duration,with elevated levels of C-reactive *** was subsequently admitted and despite the absence of clinically significant findings,the patient continued to exhibit recurrent fever.A fever of unknown origin workup,which included imaging studies using FDG-PET/CT,revealed vasculitis involving small to medium-sized vessels of both lower extremities,demonstrated by linear hypermetabolism throughout the leg *** patient was treated with methylprednisolone and methotrexate after diagnosis leading to the gradual resolution of the patient’s *** weeks later,a follow-up FDGPET/CT was *** hypermetabolic vessels were markedly *** Our case report demonstrated that FDG-PET/CT has tremendous potential to detect medium-sized vessel inflammation;it can also play a crucial role in prognosticating outcomes and monitoring therapeutic efficacy.

BACKGROUND Dysphagia is a common condition in older as well as young patients,and a variety of treatments have been reported depending on the ***,clinicians are challenged when the cause is *** is the case with psychogenic dysphagia,which has typically been treated with supportive psychotherapy,medi-cation,swallowing exercise,and dysphagia rehabilitation ***,we aimed to relieve the symptoms of a patient with refractory psychogenic dysphagia,who was unresponsive to conventional swallowing therapy,with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS).CASE SUMMARY A relatively calm-looking 35-year-old female patient presented with a 2-year history of *** showed little improvement with conventional swallowing treatments over the past 2 *** was relatively compliant with inhospital dysphagia therapy,but uncooperative with home exercise and *** particular,since she was resistant to drug treatment,we had to take a different approach than the treatment she had been receiving for the past 2 *** much deliberation,we decided to initiate antidepressant rTMS treatment with her consent(IRB No.2023-05-021).Antidepressant rTMS treatment was performed twice weekly for a total of 20 sessions over 10 *** results showed improvement in subjective symptoms and video fluoroscopic swallowing study *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report of symptomatic improvement using antidepressant rTMS protocol for refractory psychogenic *** This case demonstrates that rTMS with antidepressant protocol can be used to improve swallowing in patients with refractory psychogenic dysphagia.

Collision tumor of the rectum: A case report of metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma plus primary rectal adenocarcinoma

Collision tumors are thought to arise from the accidental meeting and interpenetration of two independent tumors. We report here a highly unusual case of a 61-year old man who had a unique tumor that was composed of a metastatic adenocarcinoma from the stomach to the rectum, which harbored a collision tumor of primary rectal adenocarcinoma. The clonalities of the two histologically distinct lesions of the rectal mass were confirmed by immunohistochemical and molecular analysis. Although histologic examination is the cornerstone in pathology, immunohistochemical and molecular analysis can provide evidence regarding whether tumors originate from the same clone or different clones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fi rst reported case of such an occurrence.
