Shoot-level biomass allocation is affected by shoot type in Fagus sylvatica

Aims The present study aims(i)to examine if recently reported interspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs,*** trade-offs between leaf mass(LM)and stem mass(SM)and between leaf size and leaf number,hold intraspecifically and(ii)to explore whether those scaling relationships are independent of shoot type(*** *** shoots).Methods In order to address our questions,we used Fagus sylvatica saplings growing under a broad light range that were sampled in theWestern carpathians Mountains(Slovakia).Important Findings We found that:(i)intraspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs differ from those reported interspecifically and that(ii)long and short shoots differ in biomass allocation scaling *** relationships with slopes statistically smaller than 1.0 or higher than-1.0,were found between SM and LM and between mean leafing intensity and individual leaf mass,respectively,in long *** contrast,isometric scaling was found in short *** suggests that leaf mass in short shoots is unaffected by shoot stem mass,in contrast to long *** shoots also had a larger fraction of biomass allocated to *** shoots,as has been observed in other shoot dimorphic species,are specialized,with short shoots specializing in carbon gain and long shoots in space acquisition.A greater shift in LM than in SM among species during speciation shifting from allometric intraspecific relationships to an isometric interspecific scaling relationship between those traits could explain the discrepancies between the outputs of the present intraspecific study and others similar *** study draws attention to the importance of considering shoot types in future studies dealing with allocation rules in species with dimorphic shoots.

Zinc plays many essential roles in *** a strong Lewis acid that lacks redox activity under environ-mental and cellular conditions,the Zn2+cation is central in determining protein structure and catalytic function of nearly 10%of most eukaryotic *** specific functions of zinc have been elucidated at a molecular level in a number of plant proteins,wider issues abound with respect to the acquisition and distribution of zinc by *** important challenge is to understand how plants balance between Zn supply in soil and their own nutritional requirement for zinc,particularly where edaphic factors lead to a lack of bioavailable zinc or,conversely,an excess of zinc that bears a major risk of *** are the ultimate source of zinc in the human diet,and human Zn deficiency accounts for over 400000 deaths ***,we review the current understanding of zinc homeostasis in plants from the molecular and physiological *** provide an overview of approaches pursued so far in Zn biofortification of ***,we outline a"push-pull"model of zinc nutrition in plants as a simplifying *** summary,this review discusses avenues that can potentially deliver wider bene-fits for both plant and human Zn nutrition.

Hypo-endemic onchocerciasis hotspots: defining areas of high risk through micro-mapping and environmental delineation

Psychiatric disorders arc highly heritable, and in many individuals likely arise from the combined effects of genes and the environment. A substantial body of evidence points toward D1ScI being one of the genes that influence risk of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression, and functional studies of DISc1 consequently have the potential to reveal much about the pathways that lead to major mental illness. Here, we review the evidence that DISc1 influences disease risk through effects upon multiple critical pathways in the developing and adult brain.

Measuring the physical and economic impact of filarial lymphoedema in chikwawa district,Malawi:a case-control study

Performance and playability of experimental low-input coarsetextured zoysiagrass in multiple climates

A 3-year experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance and playability of 24 coarse-textured zoysiagrass(Zoysia ***.)experimental genotypes in comparison to five commercially available cultivars maintained as a low-maintenance turf across multiple climates(Indiana,North carolina,Georgia,Arizona,and california).Following establishment in 2018,plots were maintained under low-maintenance regimes and evaluated for quality,density,uniformity,color,winterkill damage,drought resistance,and golf ball lie in 2019 and 2020.A turf performance index(TPI)was calculated for each treatment at each site,which represented the number of times the treatment occurred in the top statistical *** unique climate for each site led to differences in TPI *** instance,the arid climates of Arizona and california resulted in distinct differences in performance among treatments compared to the other ***,consistencies in performance across sites were also *** example,the 2018−2019 winter resulted in winterkill differences among entries in both Indiana and North carolina,which led to some similarities in ***,the southern humid climates of North carolina and Georgia produced consistencies in overall *** the minimal inputs and the hot-humid or arid climates evaluated in this study,all of the check cultivars were some of the poorest performing treatments,which clearly illustrates there is a need for breeding programs to develop zoysiagrass genotypes for these ***,experimental lines that exhibited excellent persistence under these conditions were identified indicating the genetic potential for wider adaptation to lower input environments exists within the species.

Lactobacillus are considered promising therapeutic methods for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).The effects of two strains of Ltmosilactobacillus mucosae on NAFLD were investigated in this ***-old male c57BL/6J mice were divided into 4 groups(n=8 per group,control,Model,FZJTZ26M3,FGSYc17L3).*** FZJTZ26M3 reduced the mice 's body weight,liver weight,and adipose tissue weight after 12 weeks of *** to serum analysis,total cholesterol,triacylglycerol,and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly decreased after *** FZJTZ26M3 *** pathology showed that *** FZJTZ26M3 was effective to ameliorate lipid deposition in NAFLD ***,the expression of the gene related to lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue was analyzed,and the results indicated that *** FZJTZ26M3 could alleviate NAFLD by regulating lipid ***,the results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed a drop in the relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae,which is linked to inflammation,but the relative abundance of a potential probiotic Akkermansia significantly increased after *** FZJTZ26M3 ***,*** FZJTZ26M3 could be a candidate to prevent NAFLD.

A practical approach for scaling up the alternative strategy for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Loa loa endemic countries-developing an action plan

Background:Lymphatic filariasis(LF)is a vector-borne parasitic disease that is being targeted for elimination through mass drug administration(MDA).The co-distribution of Loa loa in central Africa poses a significant barrier to the expansion of the MDA due to risk of severe adverse events(SAEs)associated with the drug ivermectin that is routinely *** LF programmes are yet to significantly scale up in co-endemic areas and need a practical approach to make preliminary decisions based on the mapping status and potential treatment ***:We reviewed relevant data available to WHO and in the literature for *** endemic countries to develop a simple method to support the scale-up of MDA to eliminate ***:A basic model for national LF programmes to work from at the administrative or implementation unit(IU)level has been developed for LF–*** co-endemic *** model includes five practical steps,which comprise the development of a national filarial database and a simple classification system to help determine the mapping status and most appropriate treatment *** are colour-coded and linked to a general decision tree,which is also ***:This IU-level model is simple to follow and will help LF elimination programmes develop an action plan and scale up the implementation of alternative treatment strategies in *** co-endemic *** model could be further developed to incorporate the additional complexity of IUs where an intervention is required to eliminate onchocerciasis,particularly in hypo-endemic areas where ivermectin has not been used.

A grand challenge facing society is climate change caused mainly by rising cO_(2) concentration in Earth’s *** plants are linchpins in global carbon cycling,with a unique capability of capturing cO_(2) via photosynthesis and translocating captured carbon to stems,roots,and soils for long-term ***,many researchers postulate that existing land plants cannot meet the ambitious requirement for cO_(2) removal to mitigate climate change in the future due to low photosynthetic efficiency,limited carbon allocation for long-term storage,and low suitability for the *** address these limitations,there is an urgent need for genetic improvement of existing plants or construction of novel plant systems through biosystems design(or biodesign).Here,we summarize validated biological parts(e.g.,protein-encoding genes and noncoding RNAs)for biological engineering of carbon dioxide removal(cDR)traits in terrestrial plants to accelerate land-based decarbonization in bioenergy plantations and agricultural settings and promote a vibrant ***,we first summarize the framework of plant-based cDR(e.g.,cO_(2) capture,translocation,storage,and conversion to value-added products).Then,we highlight some representative biological parts,with experimental evidence,in this ***,we discuss challenges and strategies for the identification and curation of biological parts for cDR engineering in plants.

Bifidobacterium breve ccFM1078 regulates bone development in growing BALB/c mice via gut microbiota and metabolites to balance bone formation and resorption

This study endeavors to investigate the effects of Bifidobacterium breve ccFM1078 on bone formation and resorption balance in growing BALB/c mice. Newborn BALB/c mice were assigned to the control group (administration saline) and the ccFM1078 group (administration B. breve ccFM1078， 3 × 109cFU/day) in 3-， 4-， and 5-week tests. All the groups have male and female distinctions. Our findings demonstrate that B. breve ccFM1078 exerts on the dynamic equilibrium between bone formation and resorption during the critical period of growth in mice by modulating the composition of gut microbiota and metabolites (hexadecanamide， linoleoyl ethanolamide， and palmitoyl ethanolamide)， the genes and proteins expression related to the GH/IGF-1 axis and Gs/PKA/cREB signaling pathways， as well as downstream osteogenic and osteoclastic differentiation factors. The effects of B. breve ccFM1078 were different with age and gender dependent. This finding suggests B. breve ccFM1078 may have potential applications in regulating bone metabolism in the growth period population.
