In this study, we induced cerebral infarction in rats by occluding the right middle cerebral artery, and tested the effects of electroacupuncture at the Baihui acupoint （DU 20）. Motor and sensory function was tested using Garcia’s scale and motor weakness grading, and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in the brain was quantified using immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. We found that scalp electroacupuncture at DU 20 significantly improved motor performance and sensory function in rats with stroke, and this was accompanied by an increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in the ischemic brain tissue and peri-ischemic area. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis showed that the improvements in functional recovery were correlated with the increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor.

Association between measures of obesity and colorectal adenoma

Background Few studies have used body mass index （BMI）, waist-to-hip ratio （WHR） and waist circumference （WC） at the same time to investigate the association between obesity and colorectal adenoma. This study examined the strength of association between colorectal adenoma and obesity using not only BMI, but also WHR and WC. Methods Subjects of this study included 1322 asymptomatic patients who underwent colonoscopy for cancer screening from January 2006 to June 2008. Anthropometric measurements, blood test results, and a self-administered questionnaire from each subject were analyzed. Results Four hundred and fourteen adenoma cases were identified in 1322 subjects. Using univariate analysis, the prevalence of adenoma was associated with BMI and WHR and was higher among the abdominal obesity group using WC guidelines of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity, but not using WC guidelines of the International Diabetes Federation. In multiple Logistic regression analysis, general obesity （BMI 〉25 kg/m2） increased the risk of colorectal adenoma （odds ratio （OR）, 1.43; 95% confidence interval （CO, 1.05-1.94）. Also, abdominal obesity by the WC cutoffs and the highest WHR percentile group （WHR 〉0.95） were significantly associated with adenoma. Among three measures of obesity, however, only BMI had a persistent association with adenoma after adjusting reciprocally for BMI, WC, and WHR （OR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.02-1.80; and 1.49; 1.06-2.10, adjusted for WC and WHR, respectively）. Conclusion The data suggest that general obesity is associated with an increased risk of colorectal adenoma.

Over the last four decades, rapid industrialisation and a Westernized lifestyle have changed disease patterns in South Korea. This study was conducted to review the current state of men＇s health in South Korea. By reviewing reports of government authorities and domestic and foreign studies related to men＇s health, we found that in men ~〉 65 years of age, 28.4% considered their health status good, whereas 38.3% considered their health status poor. The prevalence of moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms was similar to that in Caucasians. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction was higher than the global average. The incidence of cryptorchidism and hypospadias showed a tendency towards increase. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus continuously increased by 10.8% in 2008 and was the fifth leading cause of death in 2008. The prevalence of obesity increased from 26.0% in 1998 to 31.7% in 2007. The prevalence of ischaemic heart disease has continuously increased, with heart diseases causing one of every 12 deaths. The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2005 was 17.2% among adults 〉~ 45 years of age. The top five prevalent cancers in men, in descending order, were cancers of the stomach, lung, liver, large bowel and prostate, among which the incidence of stomach, lung and liver cancers decreased by 0.7%, 0.6% and 2.2%, respectively, from 1999 to 2007, whereas the incidence of large bowel and prostate cancers increased by 7.0% and 13.2%, respectively. The prevalence of depression, dementia and sleep disorders was estimated as 17.3%, 4.21% and 20.2%, respectively. Together, these findings suggest that disease patterns in South Korean men are becoming Westernized.

By adopting majority rule within a renormalization group approach,we can show that the strength of inter-group interaction in a social system either grows or shrinks monotonically with increasing group size,depending on the initial coupling strength of individuals in the *** contrasts with the findings of previous studies in which the strength of the interaction grows with group size regardless of the initial *** approach clearly demonstrates that the phenomena of crowd psychology,such as an extreme anti-reaction between different ethnic or ideological groups,could be a consequence of the many-particle nature of social systems when the initial strength of the interaction is larger than a critical *** effect of neutral opinion holders is critically examined using the spin-one Ising *** critical size of the population of neutral opinion holders,that can prevent crowd polarization,depends on the block spin rule.

Sessile plants have developed a very delicate system to sense diverse kinds of endogenous developmental cues and exogenous environmental stimuli by using a simple Ca^2＋ ion. Calmodulin （CAM） is the predominant Ca^2＋ sensor and plays a crucial role in decoding the Ca^2＋ signatures into proper cellular responses in various cellular compartments in eukaryotes. A growing body of evidence points to the importance of Ca^2＋ and CaM in the regulation of the transcriptional process during plant responses to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. Here, we review recent progress in the identification of transcriptional regulators modulated by Ca^2＋ and CaM and in the assessment of their functional significance during plant signal transduction in response to biotic and abiotic stresses and developmental cues.

This study attempted to develop an appropriate catalyst used for the steam reforming of gasified spent solvents. Rh2O3/ CeOE-Al2O3 catalysts with various CeO2 loadings were prepared and heated at different temperatures of 500 and 800 ℃, and their surface properties were studied using X-ray diffraction （XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, temperature programmed reduction （TPR） and Bmmauer-Emmett-Teller （BET） analyses. Rhodium existed in the form of Rh2O3, regardless of the sample composition as well as the heating temperature. In the tested range of cerium addition （up to 12 times the rhodium mass）, no significant changes in BET surface areas and binding energy corresponding to Rh 3d5/2 were observed. Instead, the addition of cerium led to a greatly enhanced dispersion of rhodium nanoparticles, and no agglomeration of rhodium was observed for samples heated even at 800 ℃. Honeycomb monolith rhodium catalysts promoted with cerium were fabricated and tested for the steam reforming of a gasified spent solvent, mainly consisting of butylene （C4H8）. The test results suggested that a cerium-promoted rhodium catalyst could be used as an appropriate reforming catalyst for treating low-quality non-methane hydrocarbons without the formation of coke at high temperatures of up to 900 ℃.

AIM:To evaluate the relationship between peptic ulcer disease(PUD) and acute ***:A cohort of 78 patients with acute pancreatitis were included in this *** presence of PUD and the Helicobacter pylori(***) status were assessed by an endoscopic *** severity of acute pancreatitis was assessed using Ranson's score,the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation(APACHE) □ score,computed tomography severity indexand the clinical data during hospitalization,all of which were compared between the patients with and without *** risk factors for PUD were also ***:Among 78 patients,41 patients(52.6%) with acute pancreatitis suffered from PUD,but only 13(31.7%) patients with PUD were infected by *** univariate analysis,male gender,an etiology of alcohol-induced pancreatitis,a history of smoking or alcohol consumption,elevated triglyceride and C-reactive protein levels,and high APACHE □ score were signif icantly associated with ***,on multivariate logistic regressionanalysis,the APACHE □ score(odds ratio:7.69;95% conf idence interval:1.78-33.33;P < 0.01) was found to be the only independent risk factor for ***:Patients with acute pancreatitis are liable to suffer from *** is associated with severeacute pancreatitis according to the APACHE □ score,and treatment for PUD should be considered for patients with severe acute pancreatitis.
