Coupling of bioelectrochemical toluene oxidation and trichloroethene reductive dechlorination for single-stage treatment of groundwater containing multiple contaminants

Bioremediation of groundwater contaminated by a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents is typically challenged because these contaminants are degraded via distinctive oxidative and reductive pathways,thus requiring different amendments and redox ***,we provided the proof-of-concept of a single-stage treatment of synthetic groundwater containing toluene and trichloroethene(tCE)in a tubular bioelectrochemical reactor,known as a“bioelectric well”.toluene was degraded by a microbial bioanode(up to 150 mmol L^(-1) d^(-1))with a polarized graphite anode(t0.2 V ***)serving as the terminal electron *** electric current deriving from microbially-driven toluene oxidation resulted in(abiotic)hydrogen production(at a stainless-steel cathode),which sustained the reductive dechlorination of tCE to less-chlorinated intermediates(i.e.,cis-DCE,VC,and EtH),at a maximum rate of 500 meq L^(-1) d^(-1),in the bulk of the reactor.A phylogenetic and functional genebased analysis of the“bioelectric well”confirmed the establishment of a microbiome harboring the metabolic potential for anaerobic toluene oxidation and tCE reductive ***,toluene degradation and current generation were found to be rate-limited by external mass transport phenomena,thus indicating the existing potential for further process optimization.

Value of transient elastography for the prediction of variceal bleeding

AIM:to determine if liver stiffness(LS) measurements by means of transient elastography(tE) correlate with the presence of significant esophageal varices(EV) and if they can predict the occurrence of variceal ***:We studied 1000 cases of liver cirrhosis divided into 2 groups:patients without EV or with grade 1 varices(647 cases) and patients with significant varices(grade 2 and 3 EV)(353 cases).We divided the group of 540 cases with EV into another 2 subgroups:without variceal hemorrhage(375 patients) and patients with a history of variceal bleeding(165 cases).We compared the LS values between the groups using the unpaired t-test and we established cut-off LS values for the presence of significant EV and for the risk of bleeding by using the ROC ***:the mean LS values in the 647 patients without or with grade 1 EV was statistically significantly lower than in the 353 patients with significant EV(26.29 ± 0.60 kPa vs 45.21 ± 1.07 kPa,P the ROC curve we established a cut-off value of 31 kPa for the presence of EV,with 83% sensitivity(95%CI:79.73%-85.93%) and 62% specificity(95% CI:57.15%-66.81%),with 76.2% positive predictive value(PPV)(95% CI:72.72%-79.43%) and 71.3% negative predictive value(NPV)(95% CI:66.37%-76.05%)(AUROC 0.7807,P the mean LS values in the group with a history of variceal bleeding(165 patients) was statistically significantly higher than in the group with no bleeding history(375 patients):51.92 ± 1.56 kPa vs 35.20 ± 0.91 kPa,P t-off value of 50.7 kPa,LS had 53.33% sensitivity(95% CI:45.42%-61.13%) and 82.67% specificity(95% CI:78.45%-86.36%),with 82.71% PPV(95% CI:78.5%-86.4%) and 53.66% NPV(95% CI:45.72%-61.47%)(AUROC 0.7300,P the prediction of esophageal bleeding.

Honey exposure stimulates wound repair of human dermal fibroblasts

Honey is widely used for treating burns, ulcers and wounds, but the mechanisms of action are poorly known and the product is mainlyused as an antimicrobial. We have examined here the wound healing properties of honey on human fi broblasts, using an in vitroscratch wound healing model. three kinds of widely used monofl oral honeys were used, viz. acacia (Robinia pseudacacia), buckwheat(Fagopyrum sp.), and manuka (Leptospermum scoparium). Data displayed an increased wound healing activity in fi broblasts, butwith diff erent effi ciency and mechanisms of action among honeys. the eff ects of acacia and buckwheat emerged in both scratchwound and chemotaxis assays, while the eff ect of manuka was signifi cant but lower. the use of inhibitors indicated on the wholean essential role of cytosolic calcium, an important role of ERK and p38, and a secondary role of PI3K. Acacia and buckwheat,but not manuka, induced signifi cant increases in the release of interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-6, and IL-8, indicating a correlation betweeninterleukin upregulation and wound closure effi ciency. this is consistent with our previous fi ndings suggesting a higher ability ofacacia and buckwheat to activate keratinocyte reepithelialization, with respect to manuka honey. In conclusion, our data indicatethat acacia and buckwheat honeys are particularly effi cient in facilitating fi broblast wound closure activities, suggesting newtherapeutic possibilities for this natural product.

the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax as a marine model species in immunology:Insights from basic and applied research

this review summarizes the current knowledge on immune defence activities of the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax by reporting the consistent amount of work done on this economically-important species.A draft genome sequence is available for this species,together with whole transcriptomes from lymphoid and non-lymphoid *** full-length coding sequences of many immunoregulatory and immune-related genes allow for targeted quantitative PCR analysis,nowadays needed for-omics data verification,ex vivo and in *** first anti-t cells monoclonal antibody teleost-wise was obtained in sea bass,followed by several monoclonal and polyclonal markers of lymphocyte populations,namely t cells(pan-t,CD3ε,tcRγ,CD45),and B cells(IgM,Igt,IgD).the combined use of molecular and biochemical tools enabled investigations on innate and acquired immune responses of sea bass in unstimulated/stimulated fish,along the development and under variable environmental conditions and food *** overview of sea bass viral and bacterial pathogens and available vaccines against these microorganisms is also *** knowledge accumulated in the past 25 years validates the European sea bass as a reference marine model in the field of fish immunology.

Cyprus, the European Union and the Recent Crisis： Inspiration for New Processes of Convergence or Incentive for Regional Disparities？

In the EU （European Union）, Cyprus＇s problems aren＇t new. ten years later, the same debate is being held all over again, just from a different point of view. It is emblematic of this current financial crisis because the banking system is much bigger than GDP （Gross Domestic Product）. Setting aside the sluggish economic performance, as well as the usual gap between northern and southern regions, people are uncomfortable with the EU. Getting the EU to finance a deficit is very tempting because it seems to be a politically and socially painless option, but can we count on the EU to devise such a smoothly running system？ Cyprus is interesting on many levels, from the debate concerning the limits of cohesion policy to the need of finding new solutions for the European periphery. It raises the question of whether a real fiscal and political union is possible, in light of the actual geoeconomic and geopolitical dynamics among the EU, turkey, and Russia. the aim of this paper is to explore the possible mechanisms for an integration of Cyprus in order to go beyond fiscal burden sharing. It is an important starting point to paving the way to new policies and strategies for changing the objectives of economic convergence.
