Influences of Co-Flow and Counter-Flow Modes of Reactant Flow Arrangement on a PEMFC at Start-Up

To investigate the influences of co-flowand counter-flowmodes of reactant flowarrangement on a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC)during start-up,unsteady physical and mathematical models fully coupling the flow,heat,and electrochemical reactions in a PEMFC are *** continuity equation and momentum equation are solved by handling pressure-velocity coupling using the SIMPLE *** electrochemical reaction rates in the catalyst layers(CLs)of the cathode and anode are calculated using the Butler-Volmer *** multiphase mixture model describes the multiphase transport process of gas mixtures and liquid water in the fuel *** validation,the influences of co-flow and counter-flow modes on the PEMFC performance are investigated,including the evolution of the current density,flow field,temperature field,and reactant concentration field during start-up,as well as the steady distribution of the current density,reactant concentration,andmembrane water content when the start-up ***-flow and counter-flow modes influence the current density distribution and temperature *** the one hand,the co-flow mode accelerates the start-up process of the PEMFC and leads to a more evenly distributed current density than the counter-flow *** the other hand,the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet sections of the cell is up to 10.1℃ under the co-flow mode,much larger than the 5.0℃ observed in the counter-flow ***,the counter-flowmode results in a more evenly distributed temperature and a lower maximum temperature than the co-flow ***,in the flow field design of a PEMFC,the reactant flow arrangements can be considered to weigh between better heat management and higher current density distribution of the cell.

Abstract The electrochemical properties of two basic violets （methyl violet and ethyl violet） at the MWNTs/Nafion modified glassy carbon electrode were investigated. The redox of the basic violets is two-electron and two-proton process, and methyl violet presents stronger electron transfer capacity than ethyl violet. Meanwhile, the inclusion constants of the two basic violets with five CDs were determined by differential pulse voltammetry （DPV）. The two basic violets and CDs can form 1：1 complexes, The inclusion capacities of the two basic violets follow the same order： CM-β-CD 〉 HP-β-CD 〉 TM-β-CD 〉 DM-β- CD 〉 β-CD. ？2009 Yu Jing Guo. An ethanol biosensor was fabricated based on a Methylobacterium organophilium-immobilized eggshell membrane and an oxygen（O2） electrode.A linear response for ethanol was obtained in the range of 0.050-7.5 mmol/L with a detection limit of 0.025 mmol/L（S/N= 3） and a *** 2.1%.The response time was less than 100 s at room temperature and ambient pressure. The optimal loading of bacterial cells on the biosensor membrane is 40 mg（wet weight）.The optimal working conditions for the microbial biosensor are pH 7.0 phosphate buffer（50 mmol/L） at 20-25℃.The interference test,operational and storage stability of the biosensor are studied in ***,the biosensor is applied to determine the ethanol contents in various alcohol samples and the results are comparable to that obtained by gas chromatographic method and the results are *** proposed biosensor provides a convenient,simple and reliable method to determine ethanol content in alcoholic drinks.

Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) is gaining interest in thin films for laser applications, and post-annealing treatments are often used to improve thin film properties. However, research to improve thin film properties is often based on an expensive and time-consuming trial-and-error process. In this study, PEALD-HfO2 thin film samples were deposited and treated under different annealing atmospheres and temperatures. The samples were characterized in terms of their refractive indices, layer thicknesses and O/Hf ratios. The collected data were split into training and validation sets and fed to multiple back-propagation neural networks with different hidden layers to determine the best way to construct the process–performance relationship. The results showed that the three-hidden-layer back-propagation neural network (THL-BPNN) achieved stable and accurate fitting. For the refractive index, layer thickness and O/Hf ratio, the THL-BPNN model achieved accuracy values of 0.99, 0.94 and 0.94, respectively, on the training set and 0.99, 0.91 and 0.90, respectively, on the validation set. The THL-BPNN model was further used to predict the laser-induced damage threshold of PEALD-HfO2 thin films and the properties of the PEALD-SiO2 thin films, both showing high accuracy. This study not only provides quantitative guidance for the improvement of thin film properties but also proposes a general model that can be applied to predict the properties of different types of laser thin films, saving experimental costs for process optimization.

Methane gas sensor was fabricated based on electrocatalytic properties of the Pd/MWNT nanocomposites on indium tin oxide （ITO） glass substrates. A linear response for methane was obtained in the range of 0-16% （v/v） with a detection limit of 0.167% （v/ v） and R.S.D. of 4.1%. After 100 times sensing or stable stored more than 12 months in atmosphere, unconspicuous measurable decrease was observed. The response time was less than 60 s at room temperature and ambient pressure. Some common potential interferents in samples such as N2, CO, CO2, ethane, propane, pentane, methanol, ethanol, H2 and NH3 were investigated and all the effects were less than 5% on the response for 3.0% （v/v） methane. The sensor was applied to methane determinations in man-made gas samples, the results are satisfied.

The interactions between L-tryptophan（L-Trp） and water-soluble p-sulfonatocalix[4]- arene （SCX4） were investigated by spectrofluorometry. The effect of pH was discussed. The interaction process was estimated from the thermodynamic viewpoint. The SCX4 was found to be able to adjust its conformation to fit the size of L-Trp, and the benzene of L-Trp penetrated into the hydrophobic cavity of SCX4. Meanwhile, the binding mechanism was further elucidated by IHNMR and molecular mechanics calculations.

The role of acrylamide on the human peripheral lymphocytes was studied by laser scanning confocal microscopy technique and fluo-3. The calibration value of the apparent dissociation constant （Kd） of the fluo-3-Ca^2＋ complex was obtained as 4.83 × 10^-7 moi/L. Acrylamide （〈54 μg/mL） evoked a rise in free intracellular calcium concentration [Ca^2＋]i, in a dosedependent manner. Acrylamide induced the increase of [Ca^2＋]i was discussed in detail.

The effect of penicillin on the human peripheral lymphocytes was studied by steady fluorescent technique and ratiometric fluorescence dye, Fura-2, The change of the free calcium concentration in cytosol was examined under different conditions. A characterization of Fura-2-Ca interaction in an isotonic saline solution showed that Ca^2＋ formed a 1：1 Fura-2-Ca complex with the apparent dissociation constant 1.81×10^-7 mol/L. The mechanism, by which penicillin induced the decrease of [Ca^2＋]i , was discussed in detail. The low dose of penicillin might modify the lymphocytes＇ immunology response by interfering the increase in the intracellular free calcium concentration.
