Self-efficacy for managing hypertension and comorbid conditions

BACKGROUND Self-efficacy is defined an individual’s belief in completing necessary actions to achieve the desired *** individuals with hypertension and other chronic conditions,self-efficacy has been an essential factor to predict adherence to treatment *** To examine self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions in individuals with *** A total of 1087 individuals with chronic conditions in two groups(hypertension and non-hypertension groups)were selected in this *** two groups’selfefficacy for managing chronic conditions were investigated using the five domains of patient reported outcomes measurement information system selfefficacy for managing chronic conditions measures(PROMIS-SE);daily activities,emotions,medication and treatment,social interactions,and ***,the relationships between self-efficacy and other health-related outcomes for the hypertension group were examined using structural equation *** Among 1087 participants,437 reported having *** hypertension and non-hypertension groups were statistically different in self-efficacy for managing daily activities[F(1,598)=5.63,P<0.05].Structural equation modeling indicated that for individuals with hypertension,two domains of PROMIS-SE(managing daily activities and emotions)significantly predict global physical health(P<0.001 and P<0.01 sequentially),and one domain(managing emotions)significantly predicts mental health(P<0.001).Hypertension patients’general quality of life was significantly predicted by global physical health(P<0.001)and mental health(P<0.001).CONCLUSION The hypertension group reported deficits in self-efficacy in managing daily activities as compared to the non-hypertension *** this hypertension group,self-efficacy functioned as an indirect predictor of general quality of life,mediated by global physical and mental health.

Modulated-Power Implantable Neuromodulation Devices and Their Impact on Surrounding Tissue Temperatures

This project was intended to determine whether the preprogrammed time-varying recharge protocol for a battery incased in a neuromodulation implant can give rise to tissue temperatures that surpass a safe level or are otherwise benign. The study included the development of a highly accurate model of all the thermal processes that are activated by the recharging of the battery contained within the neuromodulation implant. The model was implemented by numerical simulations performed for several realistic operating conditions. The computed spatial and temporal tissue temperature distributions were employed to estimate possible tissue damage by making use of two independent methodologies. Independent calorimeter-based experiments were performed to provide validation for the calculated rates of heat generation in the coils of the implant. Spatial and temporal tissue temperature distributions extracted from the numerical simulations revealed the thermal effects associated with several realistic operating protocols. None of the operating protocols gave rise to temperatures above 42℃. Numerical values of thermal tissue damage metrics were determined and compared with accepted values which correspond to the absence and the presence of tissue damage. The experimentally determined rate of heat generation in the implant coils validated that from electrical measurements to within 2%. Both the tissue temperature results and the thermal damage metrics found no evidence of tissue injury when time-varying preprogrammed protocols are used in the recharging of neuromodulation implant-encased batteries.

Traditional mining activities are usually correlated with high levels of soil pollution, which is a major environmental concern. Extensive mining activities have taken place in the San Joaquin region in the State of Querétaro, México resulting in high levels of mercury soil pollution (up to 1532 ± 300 mg/kg). We isolated mercury-resistant fungal strains from the San Joaquin region soils and identified them through morphologic characteristics and ITS rDNA region sequence analysis. We determined that fungi isolated belong to the genus Trichoderma. All the isolates selected showed the ability to catalyze the volatilization of Hg. For air sampling, an active sampling device was constructed and using acid KMnO4 as an absorbent, the concentration of mercury in solution was determined through the cold vapor atomic absorption method. The results show mercury volatilization from the fungal species assay, with a maximum of 213.04 ± 32.6 μg/m3 while mycelium accumulation ranged from less than 17.5 ± 2.9 to 20.0 ± 3.4 μg/g. The fungal isolates were also evaluated for their ability to reduce mercury uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. These observations suggest the utility of Trichoderma for the mobilization of mercury in those contaminated soils.

Layer by layer surface engineering of poly (lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles:A versatile tool for nanoparticle engineering for targeted drug delivery

Recent work regarding the Layer by Layer （LbL） engineering of poly（lactide-co-glycolide） nanoparticles （PLGA NPs） is reviewed here. The LbL engineering of PLGA NPs is applied as a means of generating advanced drug delivery devices with tailored recognition, protection, cargo and release properties. LbL in combination with covalent chemistry is used to attach PEG and folic acid to control cell uptake and direct it towards cancer cells. LbL coatings composed of chitosan and alginate show low protein interactions and can be used as an alternative to Pegylation. The assembly on top of LbL coatings of lipid layers composed of variable percentages of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-choline （DOPC） and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho- L-serine （DOPS） increases NP uptake and directs the NPs towards the endoplasmic reticulum. The antibody anti-TNF-ct is encapsulated forming a complex with alginate that is assembled LbL on top of PLGA NPs. The antibody is released in cell culture following first order kinetics. The release kinetics of encapsulated molecules inside PLGA NPs are studied when the PLGA NPs are coated via LbL with different polyelectrolytes. The intracellular release of encapsulated Doxorubicin is studied in the HepG2 cell line by means of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging.

An optimal design method for two materials based on small amplitude homogenization is presented. The method allows to use quite general objective functions at the price that the two materials should have small contrasts in their relevant physical parameters. The following two applications are shown: Stress constrained compliance minimization and defect location in elastic bodies.

Encapsulation of different guestspecies such as molecules and ions inside carbon nanotubes （CNTs） has been reported in the literatures during the last 15 years and repre sents an exciting development of nanoengineering of novel materials and composites. The reported nanocomposite mate rials show the semiconducting properties with potential applications in nanosensors, nanounits and nanocircuits as well as advanced energy transfer and storage properties, and encompass manufacturing for novel nanowires, nanoelectronic devices with properties designed with optoelectronic, spin tronic and nanomagnetic qualities. This review reports on a wide range of encapsulation references with particular focus on single molecules, atomic chains, metal halides and polymers encapsulated inside CNTs. The encapsulation methods and the chemical and physical qualities of these novel materials are crucial for the future manufacturing of novel innovations in nanotechnology, and represent therefore the current stateof theart of encapsulation methods in advanced manufacturing.

Nanomaterials composed of metals and metal alloys are the most valuable components in emerging micro- and nano-electronic devices and innovations to date. The composition of these nanomaterials, their quantum chemical and physical properties, and their production methods are in critical need of summarization, so that a complete state of the art of the present and future of nanotechnologies can be presented. In this review, we report on the most recent activities and results in the fields of spintronics, nanophotonics, and nanomagnetics, with particular emphasis on metallic nanoparticles in alloys and pure metals, as well as in organic combinations and in relation to carbon-based nanostructures. This review shows that the combinatory synthesis of alloys with rare metals, such as scandium, yttrium, and rare earths imparts valuable qualities to high-magnetic-field compounds, and provides unique properties with emphasis on nanoelectronic and computational components. In this review, we also shed light on the methods of synthesis and the background of spintronic, nanomagnetic, and nanophotonic materials, with applications in optics, diagnostics, nanoelectronics, and computational nanotechnology. The review is important for the industrial development of novel materials, and for summarizing both fabrication and manufacturing methods, as well as principles and functions of metallic nanoparticles.
