Cortical architecture of a sensory-motor circuit

Conscious sensory perception is an active process involving direct communication between cortical areas conveying bottom-up and top-down ***,the precise nature of the information transmitted between brain areas and their influence is poorly ***,we used a multidisciplinary approach to understand the top-down influence of the secondary motor area（M2） on the primary sensorimotor area（SI） in awake and anesthetized *** show that axons from M2 project predominantly to layers 1,5 and 6 of SI and that neuronal activity in M2（but not Ml） is elevated in the awake state relative to *** found that M2 had a profound influence on the late components of activity in SI across all layers but in particular on dendritic activity in layer 5（L5） pyramidal *** results indicate a reverberating circuit between SI and M2 during conscious sensory processing involving a vital feedback influence by M2.

The molar volumes and bulk moduli of CaSiO perovskite are calculated in the temperature range from 300 to 2800 K and the pressure range from 0 to 143 GPa using molecular dynamics simulations that employ the breathing shell model for oxygen and the quantum correction in addition to the conventional pairwise interatomic potential *** performance of five equations of state,i.e.,the Keane,the general ized-Rydberg,the Holzapfel,the Stacey-Rydberg,and the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equations of state are examined using these *** third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state is found to have a clear tendency to overestimate the bulk modulus at very high *** Stacey-Rydberg equation of state degrades slightly at very high pressures along the low-temperature *** comparison,The Keane and the Holzapfel equations of state remain accurate in the whole temperature and pressure range considered in the present study.K’ derived from the Holzapfel equation of state also agrees best with that calculated independently from molecular dynamics *** adiabatic bulk moduli of CaSiO perovskite along lower mantle geotherms are further calculated using the Keane and the Mie-Gr(u|¨)neisen-Debye equations of *** are found to be constantly higher than those of the PREM by～5%,and also very similar to those of the MgSiO *** results support the view that CaSiO perovskite remains invisible in the Earth’s lower mantle.

§1 Introduction The Operations Research Society of Japan (ORS J) was founded by 305 members in *** then the numher of members has increased steadily, and it had 2617 regular members and342 student members along with 164 corporate memberships as of July 1st 1997, when ORSJcelebrated its 40th anniversary. Unfortunately the memberships have slightly decreased since thattime, and as of February 28, 2004, it had 2262 regular members, 265 student members as well as91 corporate memberships. This tendency may be due to the depression of Japanese economy.

Purpose: NKCP®, a natto-derived dietary food supplement whose main component is bacillopeptidase F produced by Bacillus subtilis var. natto, has antithrombotic, fibrinolytic, and pressure-lowering effects, and also is suggested to improve peripheral coldness. However, existing data are based on subjective evaluations with no scientific basis about the effects on peripheral coldness. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of NKCP®for peripheral coldness by measuring changes in blood flow using a laser doppler rheometer and biochemical indices. Patients and Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, controlled study of individuals aged 30 - 70 years who complained of subjective symptoms of cold hands and feet. They were randomly divided into the NKCP®group and the placebo group to receive NKCP®250 mg once daily and dextrin 250 mg as placebo once daily, respectively. The experiment lasted 8 weeks, with an intervention period of 4 weeks and a washout period of 4 weeks. Results: One-month intake of NKCP®significantly increased blood flow rate for 1 min between 4 and 5 minutes after the end of cold loading compared to that before feeding (p = 0.038). Also, analysis of the 5-minute blood flow rate before and after 4 weeks of feeding showed a significant improvement in the NKCP®group (p = 0.007), although there was no significant difference in the placebo group (p = 0.215). Furthermore, the 5-minute blood flow at 4 weeks after the end of feeding was significantly improved compared to that before feeding in the NKCP®group (p = 0.049). Therefore, the effect continued for at least 1 month after discontinuation of administration. Conclusions: It is possible that NKCP®intake effectively improves blood flow in subjects with peripheral coldness. Therefore, continuous intake of NKCP®is expected to reduce the symptoms of peripheral coldness. In the future, it needs to investigate whether the effect of increasing blood flo

The instability of thin ferroelectric films is discussed based on the close similarity of dielectric properties between bulk Bi-layered perovskites and thin BaTiO3 films. The dielectric properties of pseudo-two-dimensional layered perovskites suggest that the bulk layered ferroelectric is a good model of ultra-thin ferroelectric film with a few perovskite units, free from any misfit lattice strain. It seems plausible that the ferroelectric interaction is still prominent but shows a crossover from ferroelectric to antiferroelectric along the unique c-axis (perpendicular to the film plane);with decreasing thickness, the ferroelectricity appears within the plane, which results in so-called “canted ferroelectricity”. An extra relaxation mode induced by surface effect of thin films correlates with soft mode, which results in a new intermediate phase between the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. These evidences may indicate no critical thickness even for ferroelectric ultra- thin films.

用二维暖雨云物理过程的可压缩模式,对梅雨季节在日本冲绳岛观测到的中尺度对流系统(MCS)进行数值研究.模拟了该系统在山脉背风面的初始形成及演变的两个阶段(静止和传播阶段).静止阶段,低空冷空气堆聚,系统逆密度流传播,在山脉上风面强迫抬升MCS和抑制背风面的外流扩展的地形作用更明显.当冷空气从山顶上流过,系统快速向上风方传播,传播阶段开始,所模拟的MCS的铅直结构与中纬度一热带观测到的飑线的铅直结构相似.

Primary malignant tumors of the small intestine are rare, comprising less than 2% of all gastrointestinal tumors. An 85-year-old woman was admitted with fever of 40 °C and marked abdominal distension. Her medical history was unremarkable, but blood examination showed elevated inflammatory markers. Abdominal computed tomography showed a giant tumor with central necrosis, extending from the epigastrium to the pelvic cavity. Giant gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the small intestine communicating with the gastrointestinal tract or with superimposed infection was suspected. Because no improvement occurred in response to antibiotics, surgery was performed. Laparotomy revealed giant hemorrhagic tumor adherent to the small intestine and occupying the peritoneal cavity. The giant tumor was a solid tumor weighing 3490 g, measuring 24 cm × 17.5 cm × 18 cm and showing marked necrosis. Histologically, the tumor comprised spindle-shaped cells with anaplastic large nuclei. Immunohistochemical studies showed tumor cells positive for vimentin, CD31, and factor VIII-related antigen, but negative for c-kit and CD34. Angiosarcoma was diagnosed. Although no postoperative complications occurred, the patient experienced enlargement of multiple metastatic tumors in the abdominal cavity and died 42 d postoperatively. The prognosis of small intestinal angiosarcoma is very poor, even after volume-reducing palliative surgery.

Background：Karoshi,or death due to overwork,has now become a serious social problem in *** of cardiovascular risks by stress might initiate *** studies have examined the relationship between job stress and obesity,hypertension,and type 2 diabetes mellitus,but less evidence exists for dyslipidemia like hypo-high-density lipoproteinemia （hypo-HDL）.The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between job stress and hypo-HDL of Chinese workers in ***：We studied 2219 Chinese workers in Shanghai,who participated in the Japan-China cooperative study for the prevention of karoshi.A questionnaire was administered to examine the lifestyle characteristics,job category,weekly working hours,and job *** demand and job control were quantified using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health *** job strain measure was defined by the combination of low job control and high ***-HDL was defined as plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration of〈1.04 mmol/L （40 mg/dl）.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for hypo-HDL as a dependent ***：Modified job strain was not related to hypo-HDL either in men or *** men,multivariate adjusted odds ratio （OR） for having hypo-HDL was significantly higher in the lowest job control tertile compared with the highest job control tertile （OR =1.39,95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-1.87,P =0.034）.In the same model,a similar trend was observed for women,but it did not reach a statistically significant level （OR =1.51,95% CI,0.88-2.56,P =0.132）.Conclusion：A low level of job control but not modified job strain was significantly related to higher prevalence ofhypo-HDL of Chinese workers in Shanghai.

Pneumoscrotum is uncommon and also rarely reported as a complication associated with colonic perforation. A case of colonic perforation in delayed fashion associated with EMR, revealed by pneumoscrotum, is reported and the associated literatures are reviewed. A 52-year-old male received piecemeal EMR for a laterally spreading tumor 35 mm in size in our hospital. He complained of enlargement of the scrotum and revisited our hospital the day alter the procedure. A diagnosis of pneumoscrotum was made, and as most such cases have been reported to be associated with pneumoperitoneum, colonic perforation was suspected. Free air but no fluid collection was found by abdominal computed tomography, and delayed colonic perforation was diagnosed. However, as there were no clinical signs of peritoneal irritation, conservative treatment was administered and the patient recovered uneventfully. Pneumoscrotum could be a sign of colonic perforation alter EMR, and treatment should be carefully chosen.
