Effects of Alternative Nitrogen Management Regimes on Production of Eucalyptus in Tropics and Sub-tropics

This paper presents the effects of alternative nitrogen management regimes on production of Eucalyptus in tropics and sub-tropics carried out in autumn, 2011. The aim of the study was to review alternative nitrogen management regimes that could enhance the positive effects and reduce negative effects of different Eucalyptus species in the perspective of smallholders. Literature review was used to survey the alternative nitrogen management regimes on eucalyptus trees. There was a significant improvement （P ≤ 0.01） in mean annual increment （MAI） as measured at seven years of Eucalyptus tereticornis in the plots planted with only legume, pueraria and stylosanthes, compared to that of the control on altitude 150 m and rainfall of 2,000 mm at the age of seven years, The MAI of Eucalyptus urophylla and Eucalyptus camaldulensis in plots planted with beans and rice shows a significant improvement （P ≤ 0.05） over the control treatment. Only the plots treated with nitrogen fertilizer 550 kg/ha showed significant improvement （P ≤ 0.05） in terms of MAI of Eucalyptus nitens, compared to the control treatment. In general, it can be concluded that as these alternative management regimes enhance productivity of Eucalyptus woodlots, the challenge for the small-scale farmers is on how to manage them sustainably. Therefore, forest policies that take consideration of increasing production of Eucalyptus and managing biodiversity with reference to these alternative management regimes should be developed in tropics and sub-tropics.

Mechanisms behind the environmental sensitivity of carbon fiber reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)

Carbon fiber reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (CF/PTFE) composites are known for their exceptional tribological performance when sliding against steel or cast iron in inert gas environments. Compared to experiments in humid air, about an order of magnitude lower wear rate and several times lower coefficient of friction have been reported for tests conducted in dry nitrogen and hydrogen. Moreover, trace moisture has been shown to affect the friction and wear significantly of this tribosystem, although a possible effect of oxygen cannot be ruled out due to uncertainties regarding the oxygen concentrations. While several studies have pointed out the environmental sensitivity of CF/PTFE, the understanding of the underlying mechanisms are very limited. The objective of this research is to investigate the individual and combined effect of oxygen and moisture on the tribological behavior of CF/PTFE sliding against steel. Additionally, this study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that govern the environmental sensitivity of the system. Climate-controlled three-pin-on-disc experiments were conducted in nitrogen atmospheres at various concentrations of oxygen and moisture. The tribological results clearly demonstrate that both moisture and oxygen contribute to increased friction and wear. However, the adverse effect was much more pronounced for oxygen than moisture. A qualitative method was developed to estimate the tribofilm coverage on the CF/PTFE surface. Results showed strong correlation between high coverage of strongly adhered tribofilm and low wear rate. Moreover, a loosely adhered tribofilm was observed on top of the CF/PTFE surface in presence of moisture. FTIR analysis indicated that the loosely adhered tribofilm found in the moisture-enriched environment contained a significant amount of adsorbed water, which may explain the lower coefficient of friction in presence of moisture compared to oxygen. The distributed nonconvex optimization problem of minimizing a global cost function formed by a sum of n local cost functions by using local information exchange is *** problem is an important component of many machine learning techniques with data parallelism,such as deep learning and federated *** propose a distributed primal-dual stochastic gradient descent(SGD)algorithm,suitable for arbitrarily connected communication networks and any smooth(possibly nonconvex)cost *** show that the proposed algorithm achieves the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/(√nT))for general nonconvex cost functions and the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/(nT)) when the global cost function satisfies the Polyak-Lojasiewicz(P-L)condition,where T is the total number of *** also show that the output of the proposed algorithm with constant parameters linearly converges to a neighborhood of a global *** demonstrate through numerical experiments the efficiency of our algorithm in comparison with the baseline centralized SGD and recently proposed distributed SGD algorithms.

In this paper, a non-cooperative distributed MPC algorithm based on reduced order model is proposed to stabilize large-scale systems. The large-scale system consists of a group of interconnected subsystems. Each subsystem can be partitioned into two parts： measurable part, whose states can be directly measured by sensors, and the unmeasurable part. In the online computation phase, only the measurable dynamics of the corresponding subsystem and neighbour-to-neighbour communication are necessary for the local controller design. Satisfaction of the state constraints and the practical stability are guaranteed while the complexity of the optimization problem is reduced. Numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Predefined-time distributed multiobjective optimization for network resource allocation

We consider the multiobjective optimization problem for the resource allocation of the multiagent network, where each agent contains multiple conflicting local objective functions. The goal is to find compromise solutions minimizing all local objective functions subject to resource constraints as much as possible, i.e., the Pareto optimums. To this end, we first reformulate the multiobjective optimization problem into one single-objective distributed optimization problem by using the weighted Lppreference index,where the weighting factors of all local objective functions are obtained from the optimization procedure so that the optimizer of the latter is the desired Pareto optimum of the former. Next, we propose novel predefined-time algorithms to solve the reformulated problem by time-based generators. We show that the reformulated problem is solved within a predefined time if the local objective functions are strongly convex and smooth. Moreover, the settling time can be arbitrarily preset since it does not depend on the initial values and designed parameters. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Transforming growth factor beta(TGFβ)is a pleiotropic cytokine with functions related to angiogenesis,tumor suppression,and immune tolerance[1].TGFβis involved in tumor immune escape and is a target for cancer immune therapy[1].We have reported that healthy donors and cancer patients harbor CD8^(+)cytotoxic T lymphocytes(CTLs)that are specific to TGFβ-derived epitopes and that these CD8^(+)CTLs kill malignant myeloid cells in a TGFβ-dependent manner[2].
