Objective:This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID-19 in China.Methods:This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade-A hospitals in China.Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID-19 between December 28,2022,and February 21,2023.The collected information included basic demographics,medical history,smoking and drinking history,vaccination history,changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection,and other postinfection symptoms,as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders.Results:Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects.The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%.Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction.Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction.Before infection,the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51,respectively;after infection,they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey.The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days,respectively,with 0.5%of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days.The overall self-reported improvement rate was 59.16%.Recovery was higher in males,never smokers,those who received two or three vaccine doses,and those that had never experienced dental health issues,or chronic accompanying symptoms.Conclusions:The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is high in China.Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors,including sex,SARS-CoV-2 vaccination,history of head-facial trauma,nasal and oral health status,smoking and drinking history,and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Ferns and lycophytes have remarkably large genomes.However,little is known about how their genome size evolved in fern lineages.To explore the origins and evolution of chromosome numbers and genome size in ferns,we used flow cytometry to measure the genomes of 240 species(255 samples)of extant ferns and lycophytes comprising 27 families and 72 genera,of which 228 species(242 samples)represent new reports.We analyzed correlations among genome size,spore size,chromosomal features,phylogeny,and habitat type preference within a phylogenetic framework.We also applied ANOVA and multinomial logistic regression analysis to preference of habitat type and genome size.Using the phylogeny,we conducted ancestral character reconstruction for habitat types and tested whether genome size changes simultaneously with shifts in habitat preference.We found that 2 C values had weak phylogenetic signal,whereas the base number of chromosomes(x)had a strong phylogenetic signal.Furthermore,our analyses revealed a positive correlation between genome size and chromosome traits,indicating that the base number of chromosomes(x),chromosome size,and polyploidization may be primary contributors to genome expansion in ferns and lycophytes.Genome sizes in different habitat types varied significantly and were significantly correlated with habitat types;specifically,multinomial logistic regression indicated that species with larger 2 C values were more likely to be epiphytes.Terrestrial habitat is inferred to be ancestral for both extant ferns and lycophytes,whereas transitions to other habitat types occurred as the major clades emerged.Shifts in habitat types appear be followed by periods of genomic stability.Based on these results,we inferred that habitat type changes and multiple whole-genome duplications have contributed to the formation of large genomes of ferns and their allies during their evolutionary history.

Objectives In order to provide theoretical support for clinical standardization and promotion of the use of hongfen(hydrargyrum oxydatum crudum),a mercury-containing Chinese medicine,as well as to make it easier to apply traditional Chinese topical preparations in a more contemporary manner.Methods We screened the topical research literature on hongfen.Firstly,we analyzed the current research status of hongfen statistically in terms of disciplinary distribution,research institutions,funding,publication volume,research types,and research focus of the literature;secondly,we analyzed the research status of hongfen by MeSH term analysis,abstract and combined with the herbal literature,the indications,usage,dosage,and adverse effects of hongfen were statistically analyzed,and keyword co-occurrence analysis and data visualization were performed using python+pyecharts.Results Early studies on hongfen were mainly on the evaluation of the formulation process,while the current studies are mainly focused on clinical effectiveness and safety,with a considerable part of the studies also focused on drug toxicology,metabolism of mercury components target organ toxicity studies,while the basic studies on its mechanism of action are less.The clinical application is mainly focused on chronic ulcerated sores,refractory sinus fistula,and other surgical sore diseases,the use of which is mostly in the form of compounding and adding excipients,the use of which requires consideration of the accumulation of drug toxicity and attention to drug dosage and duration of use in order to reduce the occurrence of clinical side effects.Conclusion hongfen is a type of mineral medicine that is extremely toxic but has a known curative effect.Its clinical use is low-risk,and its advantages greatly outweigh its drawbacks.Molecular biology technology should be actively carried out to analyze the pharmacological mechanism of hongfen,which will play a positive role in the transmission and promotion of traditional Chinese medicine topical preparations.

GLI1 and PTTG1 expression in colorectal carcinoma patients undergoing radical surgery and their correlation with lymph node metastasis

BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the expression of GLI1 and PTTG1 in patients undergoing radical surgery for colorectal carcinoma(CRC)and their association with lymph node metastasis(LNM).Therefore,more relevant studies and analyses need to be conducted.AIM To explore GLI1 and PTTG1 expression in patients undergoing radical surgery for CRC and their correlation with LNM.METHODS This study selected 103 patients with CRC admitted to our hospital between April 2020 and April 2023.Sample specimens of CRC and adjacent tissues were collected to determine the positive rates and expression levels of GLI1 and PTTG1.The correlation of the two genes with patients’clinicopathological data(e.g.,LNM)was explored,and differences in GLI1 and PTTG1 expression between patients with LNM and those without were analyzed.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were plotted to evaluate the predictive potential of the two genes for LNM in patients with CRC.RESULTS Significantly higher positive rates and expression levels of GLI1 and PTTG1 wereobserved in CRC tissue samples compared with adjacent tissues.GLI1 and PTTG1 were strongly linked to LNM in patients undergoing radical surgery for CRC,with higher GLI1 and PTTG1 levels found in patients with LNM than in those without.The areas under the ROC curve of GLI1 and PTTG1 in assessing LNM in patients with CRC were 0.824 and 0.811,respectively.CONCLUSION GLI1 and PTTG1 expression was upregulated in patients undergoing radical surgery for CRC and are significantly related to LNM in these patients.Moreover,high GLI1 and PTTG1 expression can indicate LNM in patients with CRC undergoing radical surgery.The expression of both genes has certain diagnostic and therapeutic significance.

Macrophages are a group of immune cells with highly heterogeneous phenotypes and functions,which run through the whole process of tissue repair.Macrophages are distributed in various organs and tissues of the body,which are a kind of cell population with plasticity and high heterogeneity in the functional state.Under various conditions,it can be transformed into M1-type(classically activated macrophage)and M2-type macrophages(alternatively activated macrophage).It was also found that the phenotypic polarization of macrophages was regulated by a variety of conditions.This review summarizes the existing studies on the effect of macrophage subtypes on wound repair and the mechanism of regulating macrophage phenotype polarization,so as to provide theoretical basis for further studies.

The AA5052 aluminum alloy is widely used in automobile and aerospace manufacturing,and with the development of light-weight alloys,it is required that these materials exhibit better mechanical properties.Previous studies have demonstrated that the addition of Sc to aluminum alloys can improve both the microstructure and properties of the alloys.In this study,the effect of Sc on the Fe-rich phase and properties of the AA5052 aluminum alloy was studied by adding 0%,0.05%,0.2%,and 0.3%Sc.The results show that with the increase of Sc,the coarse needle-like Fe-rich phase gradually transforms into Chinese-script and then nearly spherical particles,reduce the size of Fe-rich phase,and refine the grain with increase of high angle grain boundaries(HAGBs).These microstructure changes enhance the strength of the AA5052 alloy through Sc addition.The ductility of the alloy is obviously improved because the addition of a lower amount of Sc changes the morphology of Fe-rich phase from needle-like into a Chinese-script,and it is subsequently reduced as a result of significant increase in HAGBs with increasing Sc content.

Photodegradation of xylene isomers:Kinetics,mechanism,secondary pollutant formation potential and health risk evaluation

Photodegradation technology has been widely applied in the purification of industrial aromatic hydrocarbons.However,whether this technology efficiently removes the pollutants to prevent secondary pollution and health risk is still unclear.Here,the photodegradation processes of three xylenes were compared under designed reaction atmospheres and light sources.Xe lamp showed poor photodegradation ability toward xylenes,no matter in N_(2) or N_(2)+O_(2)system,while much higher photodegradation performance of xylenes were obtained under ultraviolet(UV)and vacuum ultraviolet(VUV)irradiation,especially in N_(2)+O_(2)+VUV system,where 97.9%of m-xylene,99.0%of o-xylene or 87.5%of p-xylene with the initial concentration of 860 mg/m^(3) was removed within 240 min.The xylenes underwent three processes of photo-isomerization,photodecomposition and photo-oxidation to produce intermediates of aromatics,alkanes and carbonyls.Among them,the photo-isomerization products showed the highest concentration percentage(e.g.,≥50%in o-xylene system),confirming that photo-isomerization reaction was the dominated photodegradation process of xylenes.Moreover,these isomerized products not only contributed about 97%and91%to the formation potential of O3(OFP)and secondary organic aerosols(SOAFP),but also displayed obvious non-carcinogenic risk,although one of photodecomposition product—benzene showed the highest occupational exposure risk.Therefore,the secondary pollution and health risks of photodegradation products of xylenes were non-ignorable,although the OFP,SOAFP and health risks of the generated products reduced at least 4.5 times in comparison with that of the degraded xylenes.The findings are helpful for the appropriate application of this technology in the purification of industrial organic waste gas.

Purpose:The incidence of heatstroke(HS)is not particularly high;however,once it occurs,the consequences are serious.It is reported that calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP)is protective against brain injury in HS rats,but detailed molecular mechanisms need to be further investigated.In this study,we further explored whether CGRP inhibited neuronal apoptosis in HS rats via protein kinase A(PKA)/p-cAMP response element-binding protein(p-CREB)pathway.Methods:We established a HS rat model in a pre-warmed artificial climate chamber with a temperature of(35.5±0.5)℃and a relative humidity of 60%±5%.Heatstress was stopped once core body temperature reaches above 41℃.A total of 25 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups with 5 animals each:control group,HS group,HS+CGRP group,HS+CGRP antagonist(CGRP8-37)group,and HS+CGRP+PKA/p-CREB pathway blocker(H89)group.A bolus injection of CGRP was administered to each rat in HS+CGRP group,CGRP8-37(antagonist of CGRP)in HS+CGRP8-37 group,and CGRP with H89 in HS+CGRP+H89 group.Electroencephalograms were recorded and the serum concentration of S100B,neuron-specific enolase(NSE),neuron apoptosis,activated caspase-3 and CGRP expression,as well as pathological morphology of brain tissue were detected at 2 h,6 h,and 24 h after HSin vivo.The expression of PKA,p-CREB,and Bcl-2 in rat neurons were also detected at 2 h after HSin vitro.Exogenous CGRP,CGRP8-37,or H89 were used to determine whether CGRP plays a protective role in brain injury via PKA/p-CREB pathway.The unpairedt-test was used between the 2 samples,and the mean±SD was used for multiple samples.Double-tailedp<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:Electroencephalogram showed significant alteration ofθ(54.50±11.51vs.31.30±8.71,F=6.790,p=0.005)andαwave(16.60±3.21vs.35.40±11.28,F=4.549,p=0.020)in HS group compared to the control group 2 h after HS.The results of triphosphate gap terminal labeling(TUNEL)showed that the neuronal apoptosis of HS rats was increased in the cortex(9.67±3.16vs.1.80±1.10,F=11.002,p=0.001)and
