Bone loss can occur as a result of various pathologies,traumas and injuries and poor bone healing leads to functionally debilitating condition,loss of self-sufficiency and deterioration in life *** the increasing incidence of facial trauma and the emergence of new procedural techniques,advanced scaffolds are currently developed as substitutes for bone tissue *** this study,we investigated the capability of a chemically cross-linked e-caprolactone-based poly(esterurethane-urea)(PCLU)scaffold to support bone *** vitro assays demonstrated that PCLU scaffolds could be colonized by cells through direct cell seeding and cell migration from outside to scaffold ***,PCLU scaffolds could provide a suitable environment for stem cells proliferation in a 3D spatial arrangement,and allowed osteogenic differentiation under appropriate *** vivo results revealed the osteogenic properties of PCLU scaffolds through a drilled-hole femoral bone defect repair improvement in *** histology and microtomography analysis,we showed that PCLU scaffolds fit well the bone cavity and were eventually entrapped between the newly formed ***,no sign of inflammation or rejection was *** envision that PCLU scaffolds can provide the clinicians with a substitute having appropriate characteristics for the treatment of bone defects.

Emergency Preparedness Nursing Education: Learner and Faculty Perspectives

Over the past decade, entry-to-practice emergency preparedness competencies have been identified as an essential component of nursing education. In this paper the author reports upon a small Canadian study which explores the perspective of undergraduate learners and faculty members who participated in and/or facilitated an Emergency Preparedness Simulation (EPS) module during a primary health care praxis course. The central purpose of this study was to explore the related experiences of learners and faculty who participated in or facilitated an Emergency Preparedness Simulation (EPS) module academic year and their perspectives on the effectiveness of the simulation in preparing learners to respond to emergencies in the future. The EPS module included a seminar followed by a mass-casualty simulation experience. The mass-casualty simulation experience included a “Teddy Bear” triage and an “Explosion” triage. The constructivist data analysis identified four related patterns for both the learner and faculty participants: Strengths (S), Objections (O), Suggestions (S), and Feelings (!) [SOS!]. Three themes were identified in each pattern: relevance, design, and engagement. In comparing the learner and faculty perspectives, there is a clear congruence between the strengths identified, the objections identified, and the power of feelings for both learners and faculty who participate in the emergency preparedness scenarios. Learners and faculty had different suggestions. Learners suggested more time on developing skills, particularly around first aid of individual clients, and recommended all students begin with the “Teddy Bear” triage. Faculty suggested a re-thinking of the “Explosion” triage simulation to emphasize community based emergency preparedness and responsiveness. Such re-focusing would support the integration of key primary health care principles and values including equity, social justice, and social determinants of health. Although declining in the US due to restrictions of asbestos exposure, malignant pleura/mesothelioma （MPP） remains a very serious thoracic malignancy that is rising in incidence worldwide （1）. Trirnodality therapy with chemotherapy and radiotherapy combined with extrapleural pneumonectomy （EPP） has gained acceptance given the acceptable mortality rate （〈5%） and long term survival reported in patients with epithelial histology, negative margins, and no extrapleural lymph node involvement after trimodalitv treatment （2）.

Dynamics and origin of cytokinins involved in plant manipulation by a leaf-mining insect

Several herbivorous insects and plant-associated microorganisms control the phytohormonal balance, thus enabling them to successfully exploit the plant by inhibiting plant defenses and withdrawing plant resources for their own benefit. The leaf-mining moth Phyllonorycter blancardella modifies the cytokinin （CK） profile of mined leaf-tissues, and the insect symbiotic bacteria Wolbachia is involved in the plant manipulation to the benefit of the insect host. To gain a deeper understanding into the possible origin and dynamics of CKs, we conducted an extensive characterization of CKs in larvae and in infected apple leaves. Our results show the enhanced CK levels in mines, both on green and yellow leaves, allowing insects to control their nutritional supply under fluctuating environmental conditions. The spatial distribution of CKs within the mined leaves shows that hormone manipulation is strictly limited to the mine suggesting the absence of CK translocation from distant leaf areas toward the insect feeding site. Mass spectrometry analyses reveal that major CK types accumulating in mines and larvae are similar to what is observed for most gall-inducers, suggesting that strategies underlying the plant manipulation may be shared between herbivorous insects with distinct life histories. Results further show that CKs are detected in the highest levels in larvae, reinforcing our hypothesis that CKs accumulating in the mines originate from the insect itself. Presence of bacteria- specific methylthio-CKs is consistent with previous results suggesting that insect bacterial symbionts contribute to the observed phenotype. Our study provides key findings toward the understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying this intricate plant-insect-microbe interaction.

Effect of different intensities of physical activity on cardiometabolic markers and vascular and cardiac function in adult rats fed with a high-fat high-carbohydrate diet

Background: Physical activity(PA) and diet are 2 lifestyle factors that affect cardiometabolic risk. However, data on how a high-fat highcarbohydrate(HFHC) diet influences the effect of different intensities of PA on cardiometabolic health and cardiovascular function in a controlled setting are yet to be fully established. This study investigated the effect of sedentary behavior, light-intensity training(LIT), and high-intensity interval training(HIIT) on cardiometabolic markers and vascular and cardiac function in HFHC-fed adult ***: Twelve-week-old Wistar rats were randomly allocated to 4 groups(12 rats/group): control(CTL), sedentary(SED), LIT, and *** indices, glucose and lipid control, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, vascular reactivity, and cardiac electrophysiology of the experimental groups were examined after 12 weeks of HFHC-diet feeding and PA ***: The SED group had slower cardiac conduction(p = 0.0426) and greater thoracic aortic contractile responses(p < 0.05) compared with the CTL group. The LIT group showed improved cardiac conduction compared with the SED group(p = 0.0003), and the HIIT group showed decreased mesenteric artery contractile responses compared with all other groups and improved endothelium-dependent mesenteric artery relaxation compared with the LIT group(both p < 0.05). The LIT and HIIT groups had lower visceral(p = 0.0057 for LIT, p = 0.0120 for HIIT)and epididymal fat(p < 0.0001 for LIT, p = 0.0002 for HIIT) compared with the CTL ***: LIT induced positive adaptations on fat accumulation and cardiac conduction, and HIIT induced a positive effect on fat accumulation,mesenteric artery contraction, and endothelium-dependent relaxation. No other differences were observed between groups. These findings suggest that few positive health effects can be achieved through LIT and HIIT when consuming a chronic and sustained HFHC diet.

Autism is a complex neurobiological,developmental disorder that is typically diagnosed in childhood and often lasts throughout a person's life time. Autism is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) characterized by varying degrees of symptom severity and impact,ranging from mild or 'high-functioning' to quite severe or 'low-functioning.' The hallmark characteristics of autism include an impaired ability to communicate and relate to others socially. Autism is also associated with a restricted range of activities and repetitive behaviors,such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific *** can usually be reliably diagnosed behaviorally by age 2,although new research is developing screening and diagnostic measures for children as young as 12-18 months of age. In 2007,the American Academy of Pedia-trics recommended screening of all children for ASD at 18 and 24 months of age. While there is no known cure,research indicates that early intervention in an appropriate educational setting for at least two years during the preschool years can result in significant improvements in language,cognitive ability,and social skills for many young children with autism spectrum disorders. Early detection and diagnosis is essential for maximizing the benefits of early intervention. As soon as autism is diagnosed,early intervention instruction should begin. Effective programs focus on developing communication,social,and cognitive skills[1].

Improving Ordering Practices and Radiology Workflow in the Emergency Department through Multidisciplinary Didactic Series: Survey Based Evaluation

The purpose of our Quality Improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of radiology-led didactics on efficiency and ordering practices in the emergency department. Residents of the emergency medicine (EM) program at Downstate Medical Center/Kings County Hospital (postgraduate years 1 - 4) participated in a didactic lecture series during the first two months of the 2013 academic year. Two fifteen-minute lectures with a question and answer session were designed to focus on radiation risk, American College of Radiology (ACR) appropriateness criteria and the department of radiology’s policies. A short survey questionnaire that included questions on ACR appropriateness criteria, radiology experiences and opinions/attitudes regarding radiology was distributed and analyzed before and after the didactic series. The average score for the knowledge-based technical questions on ACR appropriateness criteria was 60.5% initially and 76.4% post-lecture with an overall improvement of 25%, which was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). Following a short didactic lecture series, EM residents showed significant improvement of their knowledge of appropriate image utilization on the post-lecture survey. This highlights the need for dedicated radiology-led lecture series for EM residents. This type of program could be implemented yearly and expanded to other departments to promote interdepartmental commuication, increases radiology awareness, improves ordering practices and encourages appropriate imaging utilization.
