Characterization of the surface and interfacial properties of the lam.na splendens

Joint disease affects approxim.tely 52.5 m.l- lion patients in the United States alone, costing 80.8 billion USD in direct healthcare costs. The developm.nt of treatm.nt program. for joint disease and traum. requires accurate assessm.nt of articular cartilage degradation. The articular cartilage is the interfacial tissue between articu- lating surfaces, such as bones, and acts as low-friction interfaces. Dam.ge to the lam.na splendens, which is the articular cartilage＇s topm.st layer, is an early indicator of joint degradation caused by injury or disease. By gaining com.rehensive knowledge on the lam.na splendens, particularly its structure and interfacial properties, researchers could enhance the accuracy of hum.n and anim.l biom.chanical m.dels, as well as develop appro- priate biom.m.tic m.terials for replacing dam.ged articu- lar cartilage, thereby leading to rational treatm.nt program. for joint disease and injury. Previous studies that utilize light, electron, and force m.croscopy techniques have found that the lam.na splendens is com.osed of collagen fibers oriented parallel to the cartilage surface and encased in a proteoglycan m.trix. Such orientation m.xim.zes wear resistance and proteoglycan retention while prom.ting the passage of nutrients and synovial fluid. Although the structure of the lam.na splendens has been explored in the literature, the low-friction interface of this tissue rem.ins only partially characterized. Various functional m.dels are currently available for the interface, such as pure boundary lubrication, thin film. exuded under pressure, and sheets of trapped proteins. Recent studies suggest that each of these lubrication m.dels has certain advantages over one another. Further research is needed to fully m.del the interface of this tissue. In this review, we sum.arize the m.thods for characterizing the lam.na splendens and the results of each m.thod. How m.ny Electrodes Are Really Needed for EEG-Based m.bile Brain Im.ging?

A noninvasive m.thod for im.ging the hum.n brain during m.bile activities could have far reaching benefits for studies of hum.n m.tor control, for research and treatm.nt of neurological disabilities, and for brain-controlled powered prosthetic lim.s or orthoses. Several recent studies have dem.nstrated that electroencephalography (EEG) can be used to im.ge the brain during locom.tion provided that signal processing techniques, such as independent Com.onent Analysis (ICA), are used to parse electrocortical activity from.artifact contam.nated EEG. However, these studies used high-density 256-channel EEG sensor arrays, which are likely too tim.-consum.ng to setup in a clinical or field setting. Therefore, it is im.ortant to evaluate how reducing the num.er of EEG channel signals affects the electrocortical source signals that can be parsed from.EEG recorded during standing and walking while concurrently perform.ng a visual oddball discrim.nation task. Specifically, we com.uted tem.oral and spatial correlations between electrocortical sources parsed from.high-density EEG and electrocortical sources parsed from.reduced-channel subsets of the original high-density EEG. For this task, our results indicate that on average an EEG m.ntage with as few as 35 channels m.y be sufficient to record the two m.st dom.nate electrocortical sources (tem.oral and spatial R2 > 0.9). Correlations for additional electrocortical sources decreased linearly such that the least dom.nant sources extracted from.the 35 channel dataset had tem.oral and spatial correlations of approxim.tely 0.7. This suggests that for certain applications the num.er of EEG sensors used for m.bile brain im.ging could be vastly reduced, but researchers and clinicians m.st consider the expected distribution of relevant electrocortical sources when determ.ning the num.er of EEG sensors necessary for a particular application.

Vitam.n D and its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are currently a topic of investigation. The objective of this study was to explore the association between vitam.n D status (serum.25-hydroxyvitam.n D (25(OH)D)) and a cardiom.tabolic risk score (Cm.S) derived from.m.rkers of cardiac autonom.c nervous system.activity, vascular dynam.cs, and body com.osition, using an innovative non-invasive technology. We found that individuals who were vitam.n D sufficient ((25(OH)D) ≥ 30 ng/m., n = 51), com.ared to those who were vitam.n D insufficient (m., n = 44), had significantly higher heart rate variability (as m.asured by tim. and frequency dom.in variables) and lower photoplethysm.graphy analysis m.rkers and Cm.S. These outcom.s show that vitam.n D insufficient subjects had reduced cardio protective parasym.athetic nervous system.activity, increased endothelial dysfunction, and hence were at greater cardiom.tabolic risk, im.lying vitam.n D m.y play a m.aningful role in CVD.

为优化仙鹤草中总黄酮的提取方法,在单因素试验基础上,选取提取时间、提取温度、乙醇浓度和料液比为自变量,仙鹤草总黄酮提取率为响应值,采用响应曲面试验设计方法,研究各自变量及其交互作用对总黄酮提取率的影响。采用Design-Expert软件,建立总黄酮得率与因素间的二次回归模型。结果表明:该回归模型极显著,预测性强。乙醇浓度和提取温度是影响提取率的主要因素;优化得到的最佳提取工艺条件:提取时间100 m.n、提取温度100℃、乙醇浓度30%、料液比1∶15(g/m.L)。在此提取工艺条件下平行3次进行验证,总黄酮得率为9.92%。

Effects of am.ndm.nts of paper m.ll sludge and nutrients on soil surface CO2 flux in northern hardwood forests

Safe and econom.cal disposal of paper m.ll sludge is a key consideration for forest products industry. A study was conducted to exam.ne the effects of am.ndm.nts of sludge and nutrients on soil surface CO2 flux （Rs） in northern hardwood forests and to quantify the relationship am.ng Rs, soil tem.erature, and m.isture in these stands. The experim.nt was a random.zed com.lete block design that included sludge-am.nded, fertilized, and control treatm.nts in sugar m.ple （Acer saccharum.m.rsh） dom.nated hardwood forests in the Upper Peninsula of m.chigan, USA. Results showed that Rs was positively correlated to soil tem.erature （R^2 = 0.80, p 〈 0.001）, but was poorly correlated to soil m.isture. Soil m.isture positively affected the Rs only in the sludge-am.nded treatm.nt. The Rs was significantly greater in the sludge-am.nded treatm.nt than in the fertilized （p = 0.033） and the control （p = 0.048） treatm.nts. The m.xim.m.Rs in the sludge-am.nded treatm.nt was 8.8 μm.l CO2 · m. 2. s^-1, 91% and 126% greater than those in the fertilized （4.6 μm.l CO2 · m.-2· s^-1） and control （3.9 μm.l CO2· m.- 2· s^-1） treatm.nts, respectively. The Rs did not differ significantly between the fertilized and control treatm.nts. The difference in Rs between sludge-am.nded and the other treatm.nts decreased with tim. following treatm.nt.

We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient,EP240408a,by Einstein Probe （EP） and follow-up studies m.de with EP,Swift,NICER,GROND,ATCA and other ground-based m.ltiwavelength *** new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope （WXT） on board EP on April 8th,2024,m.nifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for *** flare reached a peak flux of 3.9×10-9erg cm.2s-1in 0.5-4 ke V,～300 tim.s brighter than the underlying X-ray em.ssion detected throughout the *** and m.re precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT,Swift and NICER confirm.d the finding of this new *** X-ray spectrum.is non-therm.l in 0.5-10 ke V,with a power-law photon index varying *** X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for ～4 d,followed by a steep decay till becom.ng undetectable ～10 d after the initial *** on its tem.oral property and constraints from.previous EP observations,an unusual tim.scale in the range of 7-23 d is found for EP240408a,which is interm.diate between the com.only found fast and long-term.*** counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared,with the earliest observation at 17 h after the initial X-ray detection,suggestive of intrinsically weak em.ssion in these *** dem.nstrate that the rem.rkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far,by com.arison with,in particular,jetted tidal disruption events,gam.a-ray bursts,X-ray binaries and fast blue optical *** nature of EP240408a thus rem.ins an *** suggest that EP240408a m.y represent a new type of transients with interm.diate tim.scales of the order of～10 *** detection and follow-ups of m.re of such objects are essential for revealing their origin.

2004/2005年中国第21次南极科学考察队在南极冰盖最高区域——冰穹A(或称Dom.A)地区钻取了一支长度为109.91米的冰芯(本文简称为DA2005冰芯)。将该支冰芯上部100.42米用于主要离子成分(包括Na+、NH4+、K+、m.2+、Ca2+、Cl-、NO3-和SO42-)分析,并依据硫酸根随深度的变化序列,建立了DA2005冰芯中的火山活动记录。利用两个已知火山信号的水当量深度计算得出,该地区在1260-1964年间的平均积累率为23.2m.水当量/年,这一结果与前人报道的该地区1966-2004年间的平均积累率一致。将这一平均积累率用于整支冰芯的定年,结果显示109.91m.芯对应的年代为过去3186年;冰芯上部100.42m.录的年代序列为公元前840年到公元1998年,即过去2840年。依据冰芯定年结果,我们发现过去2000年内著名火山事件在DA2005冰芯中的年代与它们在冰芯中的预期出现时间非常接近,说明在相当长的一段时间内平均积累率23.2m.水当量/年都具有代表性,也说明冰穹A地区在过去2000年内的积累率变化比较小。
