Introduction: Birth spacing to prevent closely-spaced pregnancies, which are a source of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, is not always respected by our women, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective was to study the factors associated with closely-spaced pregnancies among women followed at the Departmental Hospital Center du Zou et du Colline (DHC/Z-C) in 2022. Study Method: This was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study with prospective data collection from 20 May to 30 June 2022. Results: At the end of the study, 83 of the 117 women surveyed had close pregnancies, a frequency of 70.94%. They had an average age of 27.0 ± 6.3 years and were of Fon ethnicity and related in 91.57% of cases. The majority were married (96.60%). The factors significantly associated with these closely spaced pregnancies were age between 25 and 30 years, household occupation, age at first birth, age at marriage, women’s perception of contraceptive method (CM), women’s knowledge of the existence of a center providing family planning services and non-use of MC. Conclusion: Close pregnancies are still very common in the commune of Abomey. It is therefore important to increase the use of contraceptive methods in this part of the country.

Associated Factors and Consequences of Uterine Fibroids in Hospitals in the Borgou Department of Benin in 2022

Introduction: Uterine fibroids are the most common gynecological tumors in women of childbearing age and have multiple clinical manifestations. Objective: To determine factors associated with uterine fibroids in the Borgou department of Benin in 2022. Method: Descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study from August 22 to September 22, 2022. The sample consisted of women consulting for gynecological problems in 6 hospitals in the Borgou department in the North of Benin. Results: Of the 744 women surveyed, 10.1% were diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Women with uterine fibroids were often married, paucigesture, and nulliparous. Their main reasons for consultation were the desire for motherhood (50.7%), pelvic pain (46.7%), and genital hemorrhage (14.7%). Age, history of miscarriage, high blood pressure, and diabetes were significantly associated with the presence of uterine fibroids (Conclusion: Uterine fibroids are common in hospitals in northern Benin. There were factors associated with them that should be taken into account in management strategies.

Next-generation electronics that are fused into the human body can play a key role in future intelligent communication,smart healthcare,and human enhancement applications.As a promising energy supply component for smart biointegrated electronics,environment-adaptive electrochemical energy storage(eeS)devices with complementary adaptability and functions have garnered huge interest in the past decade.Owing to the advancements in autonomous chemistry,which regulate the constitutional dynamic networks in materials,eeS devices have witnessed higher freedom of autonomous adaptability in terms of mechano-adaptable,biocompatibility,and stimuli-response properties for biointegrated and smart applications.In this mini-review,we summarize the recent progress in emerging environmentadaptive eeS devices enabled by the constitutional dynamic network of mechanical adaptable materials,biocompatible materials,and stimuli-responsive supramolecular polymer materials.Finally,the challenges and perspectives of autonomous chemistry on the environment-adaptive eeS devices are discussed.

Members of the Rho family of GTPases are key regulators of the actin cytoskeleton.In particular,activated Rac 1stimulates membrane dorsal ruffle formation in response to platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF).Abl-interactor (Abi)-1 and βPIX,a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rac 1,localise at these Rac1-induced actin structures and playimportant roles in the induction of membrane dorsal ruffling in response to PDGF in fibroblasts.Here,we demonstratea novel interaction between Abi-1 and βPIX using the yeast two-hybrid system,in vitro pull-down assays,and in vivoco-immunoprecipitation experiments.In vitro,the C-terminal fragment of ]3PIX interacted with Abi-1,while in vivo theN-terminal fragment of βPIX interacted with Abi-1.The biological function of this interaction was investigated in mousefibroblasts in response to PDGF stimulation.Abi-1 and βPIX co-localised in the cytoplasm and to membrane dorsalruffles after PDGF treatment.We show that the co-expression of Abi-1 and truncated forms of βPIX in mouse fibroblastsblocked PDGF-induced membrane dorsal ruffles.Together,these results show that the interaction between Abi-1 andβPIX is involved in the formation of growth factor-induced membrane dorsal ruffles.

Macrocycle-based glycoclusters, on account of their promising anti-adhesive properties against bacteria,are potential therapeutic alternatives to classic antibiotics through the much less explored anti-adhesive strategy. In this study, a series of constitutionally-pure pentavalent glycoclusters was prepared by conjugating assorted azido-carbohydrates onto a penta-propargyl rim-differentiated pillar[5]arene(RD-P[5])scaffold through Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition “click” reactions. Their binding towards therapeutically relevant bacterial lectins, such as Lec A and Lec B from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and concanavalin A(Con A), were evaluated subsequently by isothermal titration calorimetric studies. Most of these isomerfree RD-P[5] pentavalent glycoclusters, except the fucosylated ones, display good affinities to lectins.Nonetheless, the dissociation constants observed are similar to those displayed by an analogous pentavalent glycocluster consisting of four P[5] constitutional isomers, in which the RD-P[5] component merely accounts for 7% in the mixture. Our results revealed that high constitutional purity is not essential for achieving effective multivalent interactions between P[5]-based glycoclusters and lectins, presumably as a result of the conformationally labile nature of the P[5] scaffold. This information provides valuable design principles for low-cost and facile syntheses of glycosylated P[5]s for biomedical applications.

Depressive disorders are recognized as one of the most common mental health conditions across different age groups.However,the risk factors associated with depression among older people from low-and middle-income countries remains unclear.This study aims to identify socio-demographic,health and psychosocial-related factors associated with depression in Chilean older adults.A cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of 1,765 adults aged≥60 years participants from the Chilean National Health Survey 2016–2017.Depres-sion was assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview(CIDI-SF).Associations between the exposure variables and depression were investigated using Poisson regression analyses.The mainﬁndings indi-cated that women showed higher likelihood of depression than men(Prevalence Ratio(PR)=2.6[95%CI:1.40;4.89]).An increased likelihood of depression was found in older adults with chronic pain,multimorbidity(≥2 diseases),previous diagnose of depression,high perception of stress,ﬁnancial stress,and difﬁculties for social par-ticipation.In women,higher likelihood of depression was found for those with the frailty phenotype(PR:8.53[95%CI:1.68;43.32]),rheumatoid arthritis(PR:2.41[95%CI:1.34;4.34]),insomnia(PR:2.99[95%CI:1.74;5.12])and low self-rated well-being(PR:4.94[95%CI:2.26;10.79]).Men who were divorced(PR:7.10[95%CI:1.44;34.90])or widowed(PR:10.83[95%CI:3.71;31.58]),obese(PR:5.08[95%CI:1.48;17.42])and who had asthma(PR:7.60[95%CI:2.31;24.99])were associated with higher odds of depression.The currentﬁndings may have clinical implications for the early identiﬁcation of older adults more susceptible to depression and also suggest the need to implement cultural and age-sensitive strategies to promote mental health in late life.

A neuron with injured or severed axon responds with attempts at axonal regrowth. In this regard, axonal regeneration of peripheral nerves occurs far more efficiently compared to central nervous system （CNS） neurons. The latter typically could not form a proper growth cone, and any axonal regeneration in vivo is very limited. The adult CNS environment is not conducive for axonal regrowth. An extensive body of work has revealed mechanisms whereby the myelin-associated inhibitors and extracellular matrix chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans promote collapse of axonal growth cones or repel their advances （Lee and Zheng, 2012）. Objective:To evaluate the potential effect of human Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells(hWJMSCs)on acute respiratory distress syndrome in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced rats.Methods:The hWJMSCs(5×10^(4)/mL,5×10^(5)/mL,5×10^(6)/mL)were administered to rats on day 1 and day 8 after being induced by LPS(5 mg/kg body weight).TNF-αlevels in the lung and IL-18 and IL-1βlevels in the serum were measured using eLISA.In addition,caspase-1 expression in lung tissues was quantified using qRT-PCR,and NF-κB and IL-6 expressions were assessed using immunohistochemistry.Results:The hWJMSCs decreased TNF-αlevels in the lung and plasma IL-18 and IL-1βlevels.Moreover,the hWJMSCs downregulated the expressions of caspase-1,IL-6,and NF-κB in lung tissues.Conclusions:The hWJMSCs can decrease inflammatory markers of acute respiratory distress syndrome in a rat model and may be further investigated for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Developing Audiences Through Outreach and education in the Major performing Arts Institutions of Hong Kong:Towards a Conceptual Framework

The public's participation rate in performing arts in Hong Kong has historically been low,and the Arts Participation and Consumption Survey in 2018 indicated that the primary reason was 4a lack of interest*and that education in the arts could increase public involvement.The survey data clearly indicate the significance of education as a driver to develop future audiences.There are nine major performing arts organisations funded by the Hong Kong government,and they share the responsibility of shaping the performing arts landscape.This study explored the role of outreach and education within these major performing arts organisations and how they impact audience development.In addition to document analysis and fieldwork,the researcher interviewed five cultural leaders from the nine performing arts organisations.The findings of this study indicate that while the organisations*outreach and education engagement help to achieve various important educational goals,direct impact on ticket sales is not easily quantifiable and may occur in the long run.This study concludes by offering a proposed conceptual framework for outreach and education when they are positioned in non-profit performing arts organisations.The four layers in the proposed conceptual framework involve cognitive,affective,ethical,and behavioural dimensions.It contributes to reframing the conceptualisation of audience development for the performing arts and sheds new light on the future of outreach and education in arts organisations and policymaking in arts and culture,with far-reaching implications for other non-profit cultural organisations in Hong Kong and globally.

Translating Culture-Bound elements:A Case Study of Traditional Chinese Theatre in the Socio-Cultural Context of Hong Kong

This study explores the controversy surrounding the translation of the name of a new cultural infrastructure in Hong Kong,specifically related to the cultural heritage of traditional Chinese theatre.The first performing arts landmark in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District was named the Xiqu Centre;the term xiqu is a Hanyu pinyin representing traditional Chinese theatre.Though this translation issue has been intensely debated for over a decade,it remains unexplored in the research.With reference to Venuti's translation strategies of foreignization and domestication,this study examines the Hong Kong public's views on the translation of the name of this cultural landmark and the underlying drivers of their perceptions.It uses internet-based surveys,semi-structured interviews with the public,and interviews with experts as data sources.The results revealed that factors of(1)aesthetics and artistry,(2)cultural identity,and(3)publicity and internationalization have contributed to public perception.This study^findings shed new light on how translation interacts with cultural,social,and political factors by examining how Hong Kong’s unique historical relationship with China and the West has played a role in this translation issue.The findings have significant implications for the translation of culture-bound elements and the transmission of cultural heritage in Hong Kong and worldwide.
