Sperm retrieval and intracytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes in men with cystic fibrosis disease versus congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens

Recent data suggest that cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator(CFTR)gene alterations negatively impact male fertility beyond *** sought to compare gene alterations,sperm retrieval rates,and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI)outcomes among men with cystic fibrosis(CF)disease and congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens(CBAVD)*** retrospectively evaluated all men who underwent surgical sperm retrieval at two academic,high-volume andrology centers from 2010 to *** men with documented CFTR alterations and obstructive azoospermia from either CBAVD or CF were *** between groups for CFTR abnormality,sperm retrieval,and ICSI outcomes were statistically ***,39 patients were included with 10 in the CF and 29 in the CBAVD *** sperm retrieval rates were significantly lower in the CF group for sperm concentration(14.8×10^(6)ml^(-1)vs 61.4×10^(6)ml^(−1),P=0.02)and total motile sperm count(2.9 million vs 11.4 million,P=0.01).This difference was only predicted by homozygous delta F508 CFTR mutations(P<0.05).The CF group also demonstrated a significantly higher rate of rescue testicular sperm extraction(70.0%vs 27.6%,P<0.03)and lower fertilization rate with ICSI(32.5%vs 68.9%,P<0.01).In conclusion,those with CF demonstrated lower sperm quality,greater difficulty with sperm retrieval,and worse ICSI outcomes compared with CBAVD-only *** delta F508 CFTR mutations appear to significantly impair spermatogenesis and sperm function.

Deeply concealed half-graben at the SW margin of the East European Craton(SE Poland)-Evidence for Neoproterozoic rifting prior to the break-up of Rodinia

Baltica was one of continents formed as a result of Rodinia break-up 850-550 Ma. It was separated from Amazonia(?) by the Tornquist Ocean, the opening of which was preceded by Neoproterozoic extension in a network of continental rifts. Some of these rifts were subsequently aborted whereas the Tornquist Rift gave rise to splitting of Rodinia and formation of the Tornquist Ocean. The results of 1-D subsidence analysis at the fossil passive margin of Baltica provided insight in the timing and kinematics of continental rifting that led to break-up of Rodinia. Rifting was associated with Neoproterozoic syn-rift subsidence accompanied by deposition of continental coarse-grained sediments and emplacement of continental *** from a syn-rift to post-rift phase in the latest Ediacaran to earliest early Cambrian was concomitant with deposition of continental conglomerates and arkoses, laterally passing into mudstones. An extensional scenario of the break-up of Rodinia along the Tornquist Rift is based on the character of tectonic subsidence curves, evolution of syn-rift and post-rift depocenters in time, as well as geochemistry and geochronology of the syn-rift volcanics. It is additionally reinforced by the high-quality deep seismic reflection data from SE Poland, located above the SW edge of the East European Craton. The seismic data allowed for identification of a deeply buried(11-18 km), well-preserved extensional half-graben, developed in the Palaeoproterozoic crystalline basement and filled with a Neoproterozoic syn-rift volcano-sedimentary succession. The results of depth-to-basement study based on integration of seismic and gravity data show the distribution of local NE-SW elongated Neoproterozoic depocenters within the SW slope of the East European Craton. Furthermore,they document the rapid south-eastwards thickness increase of the Neoproterozoic succession towards the NW-SE oriented craton margin. As ecosystem engineers,earthworms play a key role in the soil ***,due to increasing anthropogenic pressure,soil organisms,including earthworms,are being threatened by habitat *** this study,we undertook a qualitative and quantitative investigation of earthworms of the family Lumbricidae in four types of Carpathian beech woodland(Fagetum carpaticum),characterized by their understory vegetation(I,*** drymejae;Ⅱ,***;Ⅲ,***;and IV,***),in the Bieszczady National Park(Eastern Carpathians,Southeast Poland).At each investigated site,soil monoliths(25 cm×25 cm×25 cm)were examined by hand *** were expelled from deep soil layers using a weak formalin solution(0.4%).Depending on the phytocoenosis,7 species of Lumbricidae were identified at each of the sites I,Ⅱ,andⅢand 10 at site *** IV(***)differed significantly(P<0.05)from the other three sites with respect to earthworm biomass(59.71±39.53 g m^(-2))and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index(0.52±0.12).Although present three decades ago,the deep-burrowing species Octodrilus transpadanus and the litter-dwelling species Dendrobaena octaedra were not found at site IV in the present *** suspect that these two species may have been displaced by the invasive Lumbricus terrestris,which was not found at the same site in the *** observations warrant further investigation to verify the predicted effects of an invasive earthworm,including the potential effects on soils and other fauna and flora,which have been documented in numerous countries.

Trends in the rates of hospitalizations for acute stroke among patients over 90 years of age with atrial fibrillation in the United States： from 2005 to 2014

Background Acute stroke （AS） rates in patients over 90 years of age （very elderly） with atrial fibrillation （AF） in the United States（US） are not known. We assessed trends in hospitalizations for AS among very elderly with AF in the US from 2005 to 2014. Methods Weused the nationwide inpatient sample （NIS） from the USA; 2005-2014. AF and AS diagnoses were abstracted using international classifica-tion of diseases, 9th Revision, clinical modification （ICD-9-CM） codes. Results From 2005 to 2014, 3,606,073 hospitalizations of veryelderly with AF were reported. Of these, 188,948 hospitalizations （141,822 hospitalizations in women and 47,126 hospitalizations in men）had AS as the primary diagnosis. Age adjusted AS hospitalizations increased in the total cohort （3217/million in 2005 to 3871/million in2014）, in women （3540/million in 2005 to 4487/million in 2014） and in men （2490/million in 2005 to 3173/million in 2014）（P 〈 0.001）.Anticoagnlation rates increased in women （8% in 2005 to 19.9% in 2014） and in men （8.9% in 2005 to 21.6% in 2014）. AS rates, thoughnumerically lower than the total cohort, showed an increasing trend in anticoagnlated patients as well （all anticoagulated patients： 212/millionin 2005 to 513/million in 2014; anticoagulated women： 224/million in 2005 to 529/million in 2014, anticoagnlated men： 184/million in 2005to 518/million in 2014）. Conclusions There is an increasing trend in AS hospitalizations among nonagenarians with AF in the US despiteimproving utilization of anticoagulants in this patient population. The etiologies driving this alarming trend are unclear and require fur-ther study.

Object-based Classification of Baltic Sea Ice Extent and Concentration in Winter 2011

The Baltic Sea is a brackish, mediterranean sea located in the middle latitudes of Europe. It is seasonally covered with ice. The ice covered areas during a typical winter are the Bothnian Bay, the Gulf of Finnland and the Gulf of Riga. Sea ice plays an important role in dynamic and thermodynamic processes and also has a strong impact on the heat budget of the sea. Also a large part of transport goes by sea, and there is a need to create ice charts to make the marine transport safe. Because of high cloudiness in winter season and small amount of light in the northern part of the Baltic Sea, radar data are the most important remote sensing source of sea ice information. The main goal of the following studies is classification of the Baltic sea ice cover using radar data. The ENVISAT ASAR （Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar） acquires data in five different modes. In the following studies ASAR Wide Swath Mode data were used. The Wide Swath Mode, using the ScanSAR technique provides medium resolution images （150 m） over a swath of 405 kin, at HH or VV polarization. In following work data from February 13th, February 24th and April 6th, 2011, representing three different sea ice situations were chosen. OBIA （object-based image analysis） methods and texture parameters were used to create sea ice extent and sea ice concentration charts. Based on object-based methods, it can separate single sea ice floes within the ice pack and calculate more accurately sea ice concentration.
