We built climate envelope models under contemporary and future climates to explore potential range shifts of the invasive Red Shiner-Cyprinella lutrensis. Our objective was to estimate aquatic habitat vulnerability to Red Shiner invasion in North America under future climatic change. We used presence records from within the species’ native and invaded distributions, a suite of bioclimatic predictor variables from three climate models (CCCma, CSIRO, and HadCm3), and maximum entropy modeling to generate potential distribution maps for the year 2080. Our model predicted major range expansion by Red Shiner under both low and high carbon emissions scenarios. The models exceeded average area under the receiver operator characteristic curve values of 0.92, indicating good overall model performance. The model predictions fell largely outside of areas of climatic extrapolation (i.e. regions predicted into environments different from training the region) indicating good model performance. The results from this study highlight the large potential range expansion across North America of Red Shiner under future warmer climates.

The development of the vascular system is essential for embryonic development, including processes such as angiogenesis. Angiogenesis plays a critical role in many normal physiological and pathological processes. It is driven by a set of angiogenic proteins, including angiogenic growth factors, chemokines,and extracellular matrix proteins. Among various animal model systems, the chorioallantoic membrane(CAm), a specialized and highly vascularized tissue of the avian embryo, has proven to be a valuable tool for analyzing the angiogenic potential of candidate cells or factors. In this protocol, we provide detailed procedures for establishing the CAm model to evaluate the function and mechanism of migrasomes in embryonic angiogenesis. This includes the CAm nylon mesh assay and CAm ex vivo sprouting assay to assess CAm angiogenesis, as well as the observation, purification, and delivery of migrasomes. Additionally, we describe the generation of T4-KO-m Cherry-KI embryos using the CRISPR system within the CAm tissue to investigate the role of migrasomes in angiogenesis.

The Sediment and Hydrographic Characteristics of Three Horseshoe Crab Nursery Beaches in Hong Kong

Horseshoe crab juveniles have been recorded from sand and sandy-mud nursery beaches at Pak Nai (western New Territories), San Tau and Shui Hau (Lantau Island), Hong Kong. In order to provide a better understanding of these beaches and to identify those plausible factors which have made them preferred by spawning horseshoe crabs, environmental parameters, including temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen content of the water, and particle size distribution and organic matter content of the sediments at the three sites, were determined and compared. The hydrographic and sediment data obtained for the three study sites have revealed some common environmental features. The three nursery beaches are relatively remote, and far (in Hong Kong terms) from urbanized and densely populated areas. The beaches are generally well sheltered from strong wave action and inundated regularly by estuarine waters. Horseshoe crab adults tend to select these beaches for spawning as their protected features ensures the laid eggs are less likely to be washed out of the sand, and hatched juveniles can feed on the meiofauna and grow. Sediments of the three beaches largely comprise medium-sized sand particles and are moderately sorted, suggesting medium porosity and good water permeability. Such a sand type, with the generally high oxygen levels in incursing waters, may help create a well-oxygenated micro-environment for the normal development of horseshoe crab eggs, larvae and juveniles. Lantau Island beaches at San Tau and Shui Hau are relatively free from organic pollution, as reflected in generally high dissolved oxygen level, and low BOD 5 and ammonia nitrogen values. Pak Nai is, however, more polluted.

measured results of magnetoelectric (mE) and converse magnetoelectric (CmE) effects of TbxDy1-xFe2-y/ Pb(mg1/3Nb2/3)(1-x)TixO3/TbxDy1-xFe2-y (TD/PmNT/TD) and PmNT/TD/PmNT laminated composites are pre- sented. mE effect was determined by measuring laminate voltage output under a Helmholtz-gener- ated AC field biased by a DC field (0―1 kOe) (1 Oe = 79.58 A/m). The CmE effect was measured by re- cording the voltage induced in a solenoid encompassing the mE sample while exposed to a DC bias field and PmNT layer driven by a 10 V AC source. The mE and CmE responses in the two laminated structure are linear. The highest values of mE coefficients in TD/PmNT/TD and PmNT/TD/PmNT com- posites are 384 mV/Oe and 158 mV/Oe, respectively, while the highest values of CmE coefficients in the two composites are 118 mG/V and 162 mG/V (1 G=10-4 T), respectively.

Dense cities represent biogeochemical hot spots along the shoreline,concentrating fixed nitrogen that is subsequently discharged into adjacent coastal receiving ***,the ecosystem services provided by natural systems in highly urban environments can play a particularly important role in the global nitrogen *** this paper,we review the recent literature on nitrogen regulation by temperate coastal ecosystems,with a focus on how the distinct physical and biogeochemical features of the urban landscape can affect the provision of this ecosystem *** use jamaica Bay,an ultra-urbanized coastal lagoon in the United States of America,as a demonstrative case *** on simple areal and tidal-based calculations,the natural systems of jamaica Bay remove~24%of the reactive nitrogen discharged by wastewater treatment ***,this estimate does not represent the dynamic nature of urban nitrogen cycling represented in the recent literature and highlights key research needs and *** review reveals that ecosystem-facilitated denitrification may be significant in even the most densely urbanized coastal landscapes,but critical uncertainties currently limit incorporation of this ecosystem service in environmental management.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of Break Free from Depression(BFFD),a school-based depression awareness curriculum,in comparison to a wait list control group.A total of 13 eighth grade classrooms participated in either an intervention or control group and completed pre-,post-,and three-month follow-up *** participating in BFFD(N=6 classrooms,166 students)demonstrated enhanced knowledge of and more adaptive attitudes towards depression compared to the control group(N=7 classrooms,155 students).Participants in the BFFD intervention also demonstrated increases in their confidence in knowing how to seek help for depression and in their intent to seek this help if *** decreases were found at a three-month follow-up in all scales except for intent to seek *** was effective regardless of gender,ethnicity,or identification as a member of the LGBTQ *** was a delayed effect on measured constructs for Black students with gains apparent at three-month *** findings demonstrated that BFFD had a small but significant positive impact on students’knowledge,skills,and attitudes in seeking support for themselves and for others when faced with signs of *** implementation of depression awareness curricula in schools hold promise in promoting student mental health,and it is important to consider factors that might have an impact on outcomes.
