In the work presented here weanalyzed the temperaturc depcndence ofhuman red blood cell(RBC) deformation andRBC passage behavior in narrowmicropipettes (1.3-1.7μminner diameter).Asuddcn transition from blocking to passageappeared at a critical temperature of 36.4±1.6℃..In contrast,normal RBCs not loadedwith additional calcium exhibited atemperature transition at 36.4±0.3℃ [1].Viscosimetric measurements of highlyconcentrated hemoglobin solutions andenhanced calcium content showed a suddenviscosity drop between 35℃ and 37℃.Anenhanced intracellular calcium concentrationhindered the cell ***,an1.7fold increased aspiration force had to beapplied to observe an almost hundred percentpassage above 38℃.

In this study,Protocatechuic acid(Pac), a water-soluble component of Salvia Miltiorriza Bge, on theability of the vascular endotheliun to respond to tumor necrosis factor is inveshgated. In the presenceof a protein srpthesis inhibitor, actinomycin d, tumor necrosis factor(TNF-a)induces humanumbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)to undergo apoptosis. Pretreating HUVECs with Pac for 2h,enhances survival cells for 1.5 fold, suggesting that Pac inducible cytoprotective pathway occurs forcell survive. Howevef, this cell death prevention effect of Pac is markedly blocked when a nuclearfactor kappa B(NF-kB) activation iuhibitor MG132 is added. It indicates that NF-kB may be

In order to evaluate the validity of commonly used formulae describing erosion and deposition of cohesive sediments for their application within numerical simulations, a combined experimental and numerical investigation is earned out. An annular flume is used for experiments on erosion and deposition of reservoir muds. The results of these experiments serve as validation data for the formulae in consideration. For this validation, the experiments are reproduced within a numerical simulation, which consists of two parts: In a first step, the flow in the annular flume is simulated within a 3d large eddy simulation. The flow fields obtained in these simulations then serve as input for the second step, a decoupled 2dV simulation of erosion and deposition processes during the experiments. The investigated formulae are those of Partheniades and Parchure & Mehta concerning erosion and of Krone and Richardson & Zaki concerning deposition.

Most of the available methods for the calculation of the three dimensional(3d)grain size dis- tribution functions(SdF)are based on the S model and lead a grave systematical *** origin is the basic supposition of spherical grains in the S model,which does not correspond with the feature of real grains.A new model called A model is developed based on the hypothe- sis of polvhedral *** probability functions of the A model and the method to calculate the 3d SdFs using the A model are given in the present *** theoretical analyses and experimental tests have demonstrated that the A model reduces the systematical error radical- *** is nearly as simple as the so far used S model,but gives much better results in repro- ducing of 3d SdFs from the measured Id or 2d SdFs.

Objective: To clarify the relationship between loss of dPCA gene expression and pathogenesis of pancreato- biliary carcinoma. Methods: 75 slides of normal duct (20), hyperplasia (15), dysplasia (15), invasive carcinoma (25) from patients with pancreatic diseases including pancreatic carcinoma (25 patients), chronic pancreatitis (6), pancreas injury (2) and 71 slides of common bile duct (CBd) carcinoma (38), gallbladder carcinoma (18), hilar bile duct (HBd) carcinoma (15) from patients with primary biliary tract carcinoma were analyzed for the expression of dPC4 protein by im- munohistochemical staining. Results: All specimens from 20 cases of normal duct and 15 cases of hyperplasia showed marked expres- sion of dPC4 protein. The frequency of loss expres- sion of the dPC4 gene was 33 % in dysplasia, and 48% in invasive carcinoma. There was a significant statistical difference between byperplasia and dyspla- sia (Pd in dysplasia vs invasive carcinoma (PdPC4 gene was 47.3% in CBd carcinoma, 11% in gallbladder carcinoma, and 13% in HBd carcinoma. The frequency of loss expression of the dPCA gene was significantly different in CBd carcinoma vs gall- bladder carcinoma and HBd carcinoma (PdPC4 gene occurs late in the neoplastic progression of pancreatic carci- noma. The frequency of dPC4 gene alternation was different in various locations of biliary tract carcino- ma. In CBd carcinoma, this frequency is similar to that in pancreatic carcinoma, indicating their similar molecular alternations.

The increasing complexity of modern functional materials leads to the demandof a cost efficient tool for the development of new products. One possible approach to this questionis the adaptation of combinatorial methods to the specific requirements of materials *** methods, originally developed for the pharmaceutical industry, have recently been applied tothe screening of superconductive, magnetoresistant and photoluminescent materials. The principle ofthese combinatorial approaches is the deposition of large materials libraries in one processcombined with fast methods for the determination of the resulting properties. In this paper, thedeposition and characterization of laterally graded materials libraries (composition spread) ispresented. The films have been deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering, using two or threemetallic targets at a low angle to the substrate surface as well as a system of apertures. Toillustrate the advantages of combinatorial approaches for the development of advanced materials, themulticomponent metastable hardcoatings (Ti,Al)N and Ti-Al-Si-N are discussed with special emphasison the relations between structure and composition on the one hand and the oxidation resistance ofthese coatings on the other. The results illustrate that the composition spread approach is apowerful and cost efficient tool for the development and optimization of new multicomponentfunctional materials.
