Although CXCR4 and CD133 have been implicated in the metastatic process of malignant tumors,the clinicopathological significance of their expression in human colon cancer is not fully *** present study was aimed to examine the expression of CXCR4 and CD133 protein in stageⅡorⅢcolon cancer and related lymph nodes,and to investigate the clinical and prognostic significance in colon cancer. Immunohistochemistry was performed to examine CXCR4 and CD133 protein expression in paraffin-embedded stageⅡorⅢprimary colon cancer tissues and matched lymph nodes. The correlation between the two proteins expression and clinicopathological parameters and the patients’ 5-year survival was *** have found that CXCR4 expression was detected in 74 of the 125 tumors(59.2%),and CD133 expression was detected in 45 of the 125 tumors(36.0%).Upon combining the expression of CXCR4 and CD133,co-expression (both CXCR4 and CD133 were positve) was detected in 29 of the 125 tumors(23.2%).When compared with the other combinations,co-expression of CXCR4 and CD133 proteins was significantly associated with the AJCC stage(P = 0.029) and the lymph node status(P = 0.020).Log-rank statistics showed that the AJCC stage(P = 0.014),lymph node status(P = 0.011),CXCR4 expression(P = 0.023),CD133 expression(P = 0.034),and co-expression of CXCR4 and CD133 proteins(P = 0.003) were significant prognostic indicators for overall patients *** have shown that co-expression of CXCR4 and CD133 proteins is a risk factor for worse overall survival in stageⅡorⅢcolon cancer patients, indicating that co-expression of CXCR4 and CD133 proteins might contribute to the progression of colon cancer.

ON THE GENERALIZED INVERSE NEVILLE-TYPE MATRIX-VALUED RATIONAL INTERPOLANTS

A new kind of matrix-valued rational interpolants is recursively established by means of generalized Samelson inverse for matrices, with scalar numerator and matrix-valued denominator. In this respect, it is essentially different from that of the previous works [7, 9], where the matrix-valued rational interpolants is in Thiele-type continued fraction form with matrix-valued numerator and scalar denominator. For both univariate and bivariate cases, sufficient conditions for existence, characterisation and uniqueness in some sense are proved respectively, and an error formula for the univariate interpolating function is also given. The results obtained in this paper are illustrated with some numerical examples.

Lactate Dehydrogenase Isoenzyme of Lens in Fetus

Purpose: The LDH isoenzyme patterns were evaluated in lens of fetus to study the metabolism in human ***: LDH isoenzyme electrophoresis was performed in 15 lenses of human fetus aged from 4～6 ***: There are 5 bands of LDH in fetus lens. LDH4 lever is the highest, and LDH1 is the lowest, especially in the cortex of lens. LDH1 is higher in lens of 4 months of age than in that of 5 and 6 months of ***: LDH isoenzyme in lens of fetus shows mainly anaerobic metabolism in development, but there is also aerobic metabolism, especially in younger fetus.

The effects of La3+ and Gd3+ on the proliferation, differentiation and adipogenic transdifferentiation of rat calvarial osteoblast-like cells (ROB cells) were evaluated by MTT method, measuring the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Oil red O measurement. Both of La3+ and Gd3+ inhibited the proliferation of ROB cells at all concentrations (1×10-5, 1×10-6, 1×10-7, 1×10-8, 1×10-9 mol·L-1). La3+ at concentration of 1×10-5mol·L-1 significantly increased the alkaline phosphatase activity of ROB cells up to 3 folds (P<0.01). However, the effects reversed to inhibit at other concentrations. Gd played a negative role in the alkaline phosphatase activity. La3+ inhibited the adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells at all concentrations in a dose-dependent way. However, Gd promoted the adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells at 1×10 and 1×10 mol·L . These findings suggested that the effects of rare earth elements on the proliferation, differentiation and adipogenic transdifferentiation of ROB cells were dependent on their concentrations and species.

Chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is one of the major causes of hepatocellularcarcinoma(HCC),and the HBV X(HBx)gene plays a critical role in the molecular pathogenesis ofHBV-related *** have investigated whether there are particular HBx gene mutations associated withHCC in patients from southern *** HBx gene was examined in 51 paraffin-embedded tumor tissuesamples from patients with HCC and 25 serum samples from the HBV carrier by nested polymerase chainreaction(PCR),single-stranded conformational polymorphism and heteroduplex *** HBx geneswith potentially important mutations from tumor tissue samples were cloned,sequenced and aligned withthe published HBx gene *** genotypes in tumor tissue samples were analyzed by nested *** of HBx gene polymorphism showed that 31.3% of HBx gene fragments in tumor tissue sampleshad a special pattern.A common deletion at nt 382-400 of the HBx gene accompanied by 29 point mutationswas detected in four randomly selected tumor tissue samples with this pattern which caused a frame-shiftin the HBx open reading frame with a new stop codon at nt 1818,resulting in an HBx polypeptide chaintruncated at the C end in these *** the four randomly selected samples,three were HBV genotypeB,and one was not detected by our present *** another tumor tissue sample,amplification of thefull-length HBx gene yielded a shorter *** of this fragment revealed a 264 bp deletionbetween nt 1577 and 1840 of the HBV *** results suggest that HBx gene mutation occurs frequentlyin HCC samples,and the deletion at nt 382-400 of the HBx gene might play a role in carcinogenesis of HCCin southern china.

Effectiveness of Combined Testosterone Undecanoate with Tamoxifen Citrate Treatment in Men with Idiopathic Azoospermia or Serious Oligozoospermia

Objective To assess the effect of treatment with a combination of the tamoxifen citrate and testosterone undecanoate on sperm variables in men with idiopathic azoospermia or oIigozoospermia. Methods Four men with idiopathic azoospermia and 8 men with idiopathic oligozoospermia were collected in this retrospective and self control trial. All patients were treated with testosterone undecanoate of 80 mg/d and tamoxifen citrate of 20 mg/d. Sperm characteristics and pregnancy incidence were measured every month during 4 months medication. Results Tamoxifen citrate plus testosterone undecanoate treatment produced a satisfactory improvement of total sperm number, motility after 2 and 3 months whereas serum FSH, LH levels increased after 2 or 3 months. Conclusion The combination of tamoxifen citrate with testosterone undecanoate could improve significantly sperm count. The combination could be used in men with idiopathic azoospermia or serious oligozoospermia.

Overexpression of heme oxygenasel protects smooth muscle cells against oxidative injury and inhibits cell proliferation

To investigate whether the expression of exogenous heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene within vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) could protect the cells from free radical attack and inhibit cell proliferation, we established an in vitro transfection of human HO-1 gene into rat VSMC mediated by a retroviral vector. The results showed that the profound expression of HO-1 protein as well as HO activity was 1.8- and 2.0-fold increased respectively in the transfected cells compared to the non-transfected ones. The treatment of VSMC with different concentrations of H2O2 led to the remarkable cell damage as indicated by survival rate and LDH leakage. However, the resistance of the HO-1 transfected VSMC against H2O2 was significantly raised. This protective effect was dramatically diminished when the transfected VSMC were pretreated with ZnPP-IX, a specific inhibitor of HO, for 24 h. Synthesis and antitussive evaluation of verticinone-cholic acid salt,a novel and potential cough therapeutic agent

Aim:To seek a novel and potent antitussive drug based on Shedan-Chuanbeipowder,a complex of traditional Chinese medicine preparation for cough ***:Verticinone-cholic acid (Ver-CA) salt,a novel,salifying derivative ofverticinone and cholic acid,both of which are the major bioactive components inShedan-Chuanbei powder,was *** then evaluated the antitussiveactivity and the acute toxicity of the ***:The new compound,with goodsolubility in water,has much more potent antitussive activity in comparison withthe same dose of single verticinone and single cholic *** administration 3mg/kg of Ver-CA could result in over 50% reduction of a citric acid-induced *** with naloxone (0.8 mg/kg,ip) can only partially antagonize its anti-tussive *** the other hand,glybenclamide (3 mg/kg,ip),an ATP-sensitiveK~+ channel blocker,can also significantly reduce the antitussive effect of Ver-CA.A further acute toxicity study showed that the LD50values of Ver-CA were 3 timesthat of ***:Based on the studies of pharmacology and acutetoxicity,the salt has a synergic and attenuated toxicity compared with singleverticinone and cholic ***,the present study also suggests that Ver-CA,a potential novel antitussive agent,may exert its antitussive effect via boththe peripheral (modulated by ATP-sensitive K~+ channels) and central mechanisms(modulated by the opioid receptor).

The Comparison Study of Renin and Angiotensin AⅡ Levels on Normal Tension Glaucoma Patients and Normal Individuals

Purpose: To investigate the levels of renin-angiotension system (RAS) components in normal tension glaucoma patients and normal controls. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 11 normal tension glaucoma(NTG)patients and 11 age and sex matched controls. The levels of renin and angiotensin AⅡof 11 NTG patients and normal controls were examined by radio-immunity test. Statistical analyses were performed by paired t test. Results:The levels of renin of NTG patients and normal controls are (769.085±183.217) pg/ml/n and (822.035 ±124.140) pg/ml/n, while the levels of angiotensin A Ⅱof NTG patients and normal controls are (37.347±10.669)pg/ml and (24.836±10.665)pg/ml respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed between the levels of renin and angiotensin among NTG patients and normal controls. Conclusion: There were not many abnormalities of the levels of circulating rennin and angiotensin AⅡof NTG patients in our study. Eye Science 2005 ;21 :192-195.
