摘      要:It has been well documented in the open literature that fretting fatigue tests are generally performed on machines with horizontal configuration. This kind of configuration has the problem of misalignment between the actuator and the specimen. The misalignment generally occurs on the support of the actuator, which is held by a solid bar in a cantilever beam configuration, caused by the fretting fatigue effect. The present work describes the design and construction of a new vertical fretting fatigue machine. The intention of this work is to solve the misalignment problem observed in the horizontal configuration and to explore the advantages and disadvantages offered by the vertical configuration. In this work, uni-axial and fretting fatigue experiments were run to evaluate the performance of the new apparatus and all the fretting tests were done in a partial slip regime, so that the relative displacement within the contact could be calculated. Furthermore, in this research the damage caused by the relative slip fretting was investigated and the performance of the new vertically mounted coaxial fretting fatigue machine was assessed. The results with compared were those obtained in a horizontal configuration machine and have provided complete confidence on the new design.
