Change in Urban Wetlands and Their Cold Island Effects in Response to Rapid Urbanization

The cold-island effect of urban wetlands has received increasing attention in recent years due to its important role in the alleviation of urban heat ***,a representative rapidly urbanizing city with rich wetlands in China,was selected as a case study for researching the changes that the urban wetlands have undergone and their impact on the urban thermal *** surface temperature(LST) was acquired from the thermal infrared data of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper(TM) images in 1990,1995,2000,2006,and 2010,using the single-channel *** results are as follows:1) considering the changes in land use,the urban wetlands located to the west of Hangzhou have decreased significantly during 1990–2010 because of rapid *** the Xixi Wetland,the change in land use was relatively small and most of the water body and vegetation were ***,to the east of the Xixi Wetland,large areas of water body and vegetation have been replaced by built-up land as a result of the urbanization process;2) considering the change in LST,it was found from land surface temperature retrieval that the changing spatial pattern of the thermal field was highly correlated with land use *** temperature regions of the eastern Xixi Wetland were gradually eroded by high temperature regions,and the centroid of the heat island in East Xixi was found to be constantly shifting *** addition,the difference in LST between the Xixi Wetland and East Xixi has increased;3) considering the impact factors for this area,land use structure and patch shape were found to have a significant impact on LST,shown by the results of multiple linear stepwise *** the size of the wetlands in urban planning is considered to be the most effective measure in alleviating the urban heat island ***,reducing the spatial complexity of landscape patches also contributes to the alleviation of the urban heat island effect.

Key Technologies of Urban TIA and Their Application

With the high speed development of Chinese economy, urban traffic problems have become increasingly serious. Based on an analysis of the significance and function of TIA (traffic Impact Analysis), the characteristics, procedure and key techniques of TIA are elaborated according to the overseas experience. Then, in combination with the domestic practice, the standard of executing TIA, the prediction of traffic volume, the standard of appraisement, etc ., are discussed in detail. Finally, construction of the commercial pedestrian street of Chunxi road in Chengdu city is taken as an example for analysis.

Distribution and Formation Causes of PM_(2.5) and O_(3) Double High Pollution Events in China during 2013–20

Fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))and ozone(O_(3))double high pollution(DHP)events have occurred frequently over China in recent years,but their causes are not completely *** this study,the spatiotemporal distribution of DHP events in China during 2013–20 is *** synoptic types affecting DHP events are identified with the Lamb–Jenkinson circulation classification *** meteorological and chemical causes of DHP events controlled by the main synoptic types are further *** show that DHP events(1655 in total for China during 2013–20)mainly occur over the North China Plain,Yangtze River Delta,Pearl River Delta,Sichuan Basin,and Central *** occurrence frequency increases by 5.1%during 2013–15,and then decreases by 56.1%during 2015–*** main circulation types of DHP events are“cyclone”and“anticyclone”,accounting for over 40%of all DHP events over five main polluted regions in China,followed by southerly or easterly flat airflow types,like“southeast”,“southwest”,and“east”.Compared with non-DHP events,DHP events are characterized by static or weak wind,high temperature(20.9℃ versus 23.1℃)and low humidity(70.0%versus 64.9%).The diurnal cycles of meteorological conditions cause PM_(2.5)(0300–1200 LST,Local Standard Time=UTC+8 hours)and O_(3)(1500–2100 LST)to exceed the national standards at different periods of the DHP *** pollutant conversion indices further indicate the rapid secondary conversions during DHP events,and thus the concentrations of NO_(2),SO_(2) and volatile organic compounds decrease by 13.1%,4.7%and 4.4%,*** results of this study can be informative for future decisions on the management of DHP events.

Experimental investigation of the effects of shrub filter strips on debris flow trapping and interception

Ecological engineering plays an increasingly significant role in mountain hazard control, but the effect of species selection and arrangement(e.g., row spacing and stem spacing) on debris flow suppression is still unclear. To further understand the interception efficiency of shrub arrangement parameters on debris flow and explore the difference with slow hydraulic erosion, sixteen sets of small-scale flume experiments with different stem and row spacings were done to study the effects of shrubs on debris flow severity, flow rate, velocity, and particle size. The results suggest that, for a dilute debris flow, sediment interception effectiveness(27.4%-60.9%) decreases gradually as stem spacing increases. Moreover, as row spacing increases, flow velocity reduction(34.4%-44.9%) and flow reduction(18.5%-47.4%) gradually decrease; and the bulk density reduction(0.5%-5.3%) and sediment interception increase initially and then decrease. In contrast, for a viscous debris flow, the flow reduction, flow velocity reduction, and sedimentation interception decrease gradually as the stem spacing increases. As row spacing increases,the flow velocity reduction, flow reduction, and sediment interception all increase initially and then decrease. A formula for the flow velocity of dilute debris flow after the filter strip was derived based on the energy conservation law and Bernoulli’s equation, confirming that debris flow movement is closely related to the degree of vegetation cover. This research strengthens the current understanding of the effectiveness of vegetation in debris flow disaster prevention and control and can guide practical applications.

“Extreme utilization”development of deep shale gas in southern Sichuan Basin,SW China

To efficiently develop deep shale gas in southern Sichuan Basin,under the guidance of“extreme utilization”theory,a basic idea and solutions for deep shale gas development are put forward and applied in *** view of multiple influencing factors of shale gas development,low single-well production and marginal profit of wells in this region,the basic idea is to establish“transparent geological body”of the block in concern,evaluate the factors affecting shale gas development through integrated geological-engineering research and optimize the shale gas development of wells in their whole life cycle to balance the relationship between production objectives and development *** solutions are as follows:(1)calculate the gold target index and pinpoint the location of horizontal well drilling target,and shale reservoirs are depicted accurately by geophysical and other means to build underground transparent geological body;(2)optimize the drilling and completion process,improve the adaptability of key tools by cooling,reducing density and optimizing the performance of drilling fluid,the“man-made gas reservoir”is built by comprehensively considering the characteristics of in-situ stress and fractures after the development well is drilled;(3)through efficient management,establishment of learning curve and optimization of drainage and production regime,the development quality and efficiency of the well are improved across its whole life cycle,to fulfil“extreme utilization”development of shale *** practice shows that the estimated ultimate recovery of single wells in southern Sichuan Basin increase by 10%-20%than last year.

Using structure restoration maps to comprehensively identify potential faults and fractures in compressional structures

Faults and fractures of multiple scales are frequently induced and generated in compressional structural system. Comprehensive identification of these potential faults and fractures that cannot be distinguished directly from seismic profile of the complex structures is still an unanswered problem. Based on the compressional structural geometry and kinematics theories as well as the structural interpretation from seismic data, a set of techniques is established for the identification of potential faults and fractures in compressional structures. Firstly, three-dimensional(3D) patterns and characteristics of the faults directly interpreted from seismic profile were illustrated by 3D structural model. Then, the unfolding index maps, the principal structural curvature maps, and tectonic stress field maps were obtained from structural restoration. Moreover, potential faults and fractures in compressional structures were quantitatively identified relying on comprehensive analysis of these three maps. Successful identification of the potential faults and fractures in Mishrif limestone formation and in Asmari dolomite formation of Buzurgan anticline in Iraq demonstrates the applicability and reliability of these techniques.

The study of artificial intelligence for predicting land use changes in an arid ecosystem

During the 21 st century,artificial intelligence methods have been broadly applied in geosciences to simulate complex dynamic ecosystems,but the use of artificial intelligence(AI)methods to reproduce land-use/cover change(LUCC)in arid ecosystems remains *** paper presents a hybrid modeling approach to understand the complexity in *** logic,equation-based systems,and expert systems are combined to predict LUCC as determined by water resources and other *** driving factors of LUCC in this study include climate change,ecological flooding,groundwater conditions,and human *** increase of natural flooding was found to be effective in preventing vegetation *** are sensitive under different climate projections of RCP2.6,RCP4.5,and *** results indicate that the increase of precipitation is not able to compensate for the additional evaporation losses resulting from temperature *** results indicate that grassland,shrub,and riparian forest regions will shrink in this study *** change in grasslands has a strong negative correlation with the change in groundwater salinity,whereas forest change had a strong positive correlation with ecological *** application of artificial intelligence to study LUCC can guide land management policies and make predictions regarding land degradation.

An improved social force model (ISFM)-based crowd evacuation simulation method in virtual reality with a subway fire as a case study

Crowd evacuation simulation using virtual reality(VR)is significant for digital emergency response ***,existing evacuation simulation studies suffer from poor adaptation to complex environments,inefficient evacuations,and poor simulation effects and do not fully consider the impacts of specific disaster environments on crowd *** more realistically express the crowd evacuation results obtained under the influence offire environments and the subjective consciousness of pedestrians in subway stations,we designed a dynamic pedestrian evacuation path planning method under multiple constraints,analysed the influences of an‘environmental role’and a‘subjective initiative’on crowd evacuation,established an improved social force model(ISFM)-based crowd evacuation simulation method in VR,developed a prototype system and conducted experimental *** experimental results show that the crowd evacuation time of the ISFM is affected by the disaster *** simulation experiments without disaster scenarios,the improved model’s crowd evacuation efficiency improved by averages of 12.53%and 15.37%over the commercial Pathfinder software and the original social force model,*** method described herein can effectively support real-time VR crowd evacuation simulation under multiexit and multifloor conditions and can provide technical support for emergency evacuation learning and management decision analyses involving subwayfires.
