Mechanical behavior of salt rocks: A geomechanical model

The geomechanical behavior of salt rocks is a significant concern during drilling and development operations in some hydrocarbon reservoirs and underground gas storage sites.In this study,the static and dynamic salt rock geomechanical properties from a field in southwest Iran were evaluated using experiments such as waves'velocities,and thermo-mechanical coupled uniaxial and triaxial compression tests.As a result and by considering both the petrophysical well logs and laboratory data of the waves’velocities,it is observed that the elastic properties of the core samples are concentrated within a narrow range unless an abnormality causes scatter.The results of uniaxial compression tests showed that rock strength decreases with increasing temperature linearly.In addition,the reduction of rock strength was observed with increasing porosity of the core samples as expected.In the case of triaxial compression tests,applying confining pressure on the core sample caused an increment in rock strength,while temperature decreased rock strength.The temperature also increased cohesion and decreases friction angle.The ratio of changes in stress to strain was used to investigate the dynamic changes in the geomechanical state.The maximum 0.25 damage factor was observed for the core samples for different definitions of the damage factor.Finally,we propose a novel analytical model to predict the stress-strain behavior of salt rocks at different conditions.The model was validated using experimental results and indicated a satisfactory accuracy.

Calcium phosphates(CaP)are widely used synthetic bone graft substitutes,having bioactivity that is regulated by a set of intertwined physico-chemical and structural properties.While some CaPs have shown to be as effective in regenerating large bone defects as autologous bone,there is still the need to understand the role of individual material properties in CaP performance.Here,we aimed to decouple the effects of chemical composition and surface-microstructure of a beta-tricalcium phosphate(TCP)ceramic,with proven osteoinductive potential,on human mesenchymal stromal cells(hMSCs)differentiation.To this end,we replicated the surface structure of the TCP ceramic into polylactic acid without inorganic additives,or containing the chemical constituents of the ceramic,i.e.,a calcium salt,a phosphate salt,or TCP powder.The microstructure of the different materials was characterized by confocal laser profilometry.hMSCs were cultured on the materials,and the expression of a set of osteogenic genes was determined.The cell culture medium was collected and the levels of calcium and phosphate ions were quantified by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry.The results revealed that none of the tested combinations of properties in polymer/composite replicas was as potent in supporting the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs as the original ceramic.Nevertheless,we observed some effects of the surface structure in the absence of inorganics,as well as combined effects of surface structure and the added salts,in particular calcium,on osteogenic differentiation.The approach presented here can be used to study the role of independent properties in other CaP-based biomaterials.

With the use of a local dependency on instrument setting parameters of the probability density of local hidden variables, it is demonstrated that a Kolmogorov formulation reproduces the quantum correlation. This is the novelty of the work. In a Bell experiment, one cannot distinguish between Bell’s formula and the here presented local Kolmogorov formula. With the presented formula, no CHSH can be obtained. Therefore, the famous CHSH inequality has no excluding power concerning local extra Einstein parameter models. This result concurs with other previous research concerning difficulties with Bell’s formula.

Data availability is of vital importance for marine and oceanographic research but most of the European data are fragmented,not always validated and not easily accessible.In the countries bordering the European seas,more than 1000 scientific laboratories from governmental organisations and private industry collect data using various sensors on board of research vessels,submarines,fixed and drifting platforms,aeroplanes and satellites to measure physical,geophysical,geological,biological and chemical parameters,biological species and *** is an Integrated Research Infrastructure Initiative(I3)(2006-2011)in the EU FP6 framework programme.It is developing an efficient distributed Pan-European marine data management infrastructure for managing these large and diverse data sets.It is interconnecting the existing professional data centres of 35 countries,active in data collection and providing integrated databases of standardised quality on-line.This article describes the architecture and the features of the SeaDataNet infrastructure.In particular it describes the way interoperability is achieved between all the contributing data centres.Finally it highlights the on-going developments and challenges.

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, with a profound impact on the quality of life of patients. In this work, we aimed to study the safety characteristics of CleodermTM, a novel functional semisolid vehicle developed for the compounding of treatments for acne and oily skin. The primary and cumulative irritation and sensitization potential were evaluated in 54 healthy volunteers in a comparative single-blinded study, while the acnegenic and comedogenic potential of the product were assessed in 31 healthy volunteers with combination to oily skin through a non-comparative study. CleodermTM was applied (0.05 g/cm2) in filter paper discs in both studies. For the evaluation of the irritation and sensitization potential, the investigational product, or a control (0.9% NaCl) was applied to the right or left scapular area of the study subjects. No clinical reactions were observed during the induction or challenge phases, suggesting that CleodermTM presents no irritating or allergenic potential. Regarding acnegenicity and comedogenicity, no significant increase in the number of acne lesions linked to the application of the product in four areas of the face was reported, indicating that CleodermTM appears not to display acnegenic and comedogenic potential. Furthermore, over 60% of the study subjects exhibited a decrease in the number of acne lesions after product use. These results show that CleodermTM exhibited no irritating, sensitizing, acnegenic or comedogenic potential, and suggest that it can be considered safe under the study conditions and that the claims dermatologically tested, clinically tested, and non-comedogenic/acnegenic can be supported.

The operation of electricity grids has become increasingly complex due to the current upheaval and the increase in renewable energy production.As a consequence,active grid management is reaching its limits with conventional approaches.In the context of the Learning to Run a Power Network(L2RPN)challenge,it has been shown that Reinforcement Learning(RL)is an efficient and reliable approach with considerable potential for automatic grid operation.In this article,we analyse the submitted agent from Binbinchen and provide novel strategies to improve the agent,both for the RL and the rule-based approach.The main improvement is a N-1 strategy,where we consider topology actions that keep the grid stable,even if one line is disconnected.More,we also propose a topology reversion to the original grid,which proved to be beneficial.The improvements are tested against reference approaches on the challenge test sets and are able to increase the performance of the rule-based agent by 27%.In direct comparison between rule-based and RL agent we find similar performance.However,the RL agent has a clear computational advantage.We also analyse the behaviour in an exemplary case in more detail to provide additional insights.Here,we observe that through the N-1 strategy,the actions of both the rule-based and the RL agent become more diversified.
