Background Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) affect approximately 1.5 billion people globally. The current STH control strategy is annual or twice-annual preventive chemotherapy, typically school-based deworming targeting children and women of reproductive age. Mathematical modeling suggests that it may be possible to interrupt STH transmission through high-coverage community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA). DeWorm3 is a cluster randomized trial testing cMDA for prevalence reduction and transmission interruption. The purpose of this study is to describe coverage of cMDA in study clusters over time and correlates of coverage at individual and cluster *** From 2018-2020, DeWorm3 delivered six rounds of cMDA with 400 mg albendazole at sites in Benin, India, and Malawi. We report coverage, treatment uptake, and directly observed therapy across all rounds. Factors associated with coverage at the cluster level were identified using binomial generalized estimating equations, while factors associated with non-treatment at the individual level were identified using binomial mixed-effects *** Coverage was high across all clusters and rounds, exceeding the WHO target of 75% in all sites and across all rounds (78% to 95%); cluster-level coverage tended to increase over time. Younger, unmarried, and migratory adults were more likely to be untreated at all sites; adult males were more likely to be untreated in Benin and Malawi. Among children, girls were more likely to be untreated, as were non-school-attending and migratory children. Higher adult education was associated with greater odds of non-treatment among adults, but lower odds among children in the household. Most human pathogens originate from non-human hosts and certain pathogens persist in animal *** transmission of such pathogens to humans may lead to self-sustaining chains of *** pathogens represent the highest risk for future *** their prevention,the transmission over the species barrier—although rare—should,by all means,be *** the current COVID-19 pandemic,surprisingly though,most of the current research concentrates on the control by drugs and vaccines,while comparatively little scientific inquiry focuses on future *** in 2012,the World Bank recommended to engage in a systemic One Health approach for zoonoses control,considering integrated surveillance-response and control of human and animal diseases for primarily economic *** examples,like integrated West Nile virus surveillance in mosquitos,wild birds,horses and humans in Italy show evidence of financial savings from a closer cooperation of human and animal health *** a zoonotic origin can be ascertained for the COVID-19 pandemic,integrated wildlife,domestic animal and humans disease surveillance-response may contribute to prevent future *** conclusion,the earlier a zoonotic pathogen can be detected in the environment,in wildlife or in domestic animals;and the better human,animal and environmental surveillance communicate with each other to prevent an outbreak,the lower are the cumulative costs.

Background:Cryptosporidium *** an important intestinal protozoan causing diarrhea in humans,livestock,and wild *** infection remains a major public health issue,but its epidemiology in humans is still unclear,particularly in rural *** study was designed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection in a rural southwestern Chinese ***:A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 687 residents of a small town in a Yi autonomous prefecture of southwest China in *** samples were examined using a broad set of quality-controlled diagnostic methods for hepatitis B virus(HBV)and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Stool specimens were processed using the modified acid-fast staining method,and microscopically examined for Cryptosporidium *** and multivariable analyses were performed to determine the risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium ***:The majority of the participants were Yi people with poor living conditions and unsatisfactory hygiene habits,and the study area was of very low socioeconomic *** the 615 individuals included in the analysis,14(2.3%)were HIV positive,51(8.3%)were infected with HBV,and 74(12.0%)had Cryptosporidium *** prevalences of HIV/HBV,HIV/Cryptosporidium,and HBV/Cryptosporidium co-infections were 0.3%,0.3%,and 1.8%,*** prevalence of HBV infection was higher in individuals with Cryptosporidium infection(χ^(2)=5.00,P=0.03).Owning livestock or poultry was an important risk factor for Cryptosporidium infection(aOR=2.27,95%CI:1.01-5.08,P<0.05).Cryptosporidium infection was significantly associated with HBV infection(aOR=3.42,95%CI:1.47-7.92,P<0.01),but not with HIV infection(aOR=0.57,95%CI:0.07-4.39,P=0.59).Conclusions:The prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was high in the rural area of southwestern China that was investigated,and there was a significant association between HB

Background:Antimicrobial resistance(AMR)is one of the greatest threats to animal and public ***,we conducted a dynamic surveillance of Escherichia coli on Chongming Island in Shanghai during 2009-2021 to identify the characteristics and trends of Chongming’s AMR ***:Rectal(cloaca)swabs from four poultry and nine swine farms(Chongming Island,2009-2021)were collected for *** strains *** micro-broth dilution method was used to test antimicrobial susceptibility of *** isolates against 10 antimicrobial classes including 15 *** generalized linear mixed models(GLMMs)and co-occurrence analyses,we further explored the multiple-drug-resistance(MDR)combinations and dynamic patterns of *** over 10 years in two food ***:Total of 863 MDR isolates were found among 945 collected *** isolates,337 from poultry and 608 from *** isolates exhibited high resistant rates(>70%)to tetracyclines,phenicols,sulfonamides,penicillins,and aminoglycosides(only in swine).The resistant rates of swine isolates to penicillins,aminoglycosides,tetracyclines,phenicols,and polymyxins were significantly higher than those of poultry isolates,whereas resistance to fluoroquinolones was *** to polymyxins decreased similarly in swine(42.4%in 2009 to 0.0%in 2021)and poultry isolates(from 16.5%to 0.0%).However,resistance to other seven antimicrobial classes(excluding carbapenems and penicillins)declined dramatically in swine isolates,particularly fluoroquinolones(from 80.5%to 14.4%),and tendencies of resistance to the seven classes showed markedly divergent patterns in poultry *** Poisson GLMMs,the AMR carriage since 2016 was significantly lower than that of 2009(odds ratio<1),indicating a decline in the risk of MDR ***,despite the highly diverse MDR profiles,co-occurrence analysis identified two prominent MDR clusters of penicillins-phenicols-fluoroquinolones in poultry and aminoglyco

The distribution of the immune system throughout the body complicates in vitro assessments of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)immunobiology,often resulting in a lack of reproducibility when extrapolated to the whole ***,developing animal models is imperative for a comprehensive understanding of the pathology and immunology of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)*** review summarizes current progress related to COVID-19 animal models,including non-human primates(NHPs),mice,and hamsters,with a focus on their roles in exploring the mechanisms of immunopathology,immune protection,and long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection,as well as their application in immunoprevention and immunotherapy of SARS-CoV-2 *** among these animal models and their specific applications are also highlighted,as no single model can fully encapsulate all aspects of *** effectively address the challenges posed by COVID-19,it is essential to select appropriate animal models that can accurately replicate both fatal and non-fatal infections with varying courses and *** animal model libraries and associated research tools is key to resolving the global COVID-19 pandemic,serving as a robust resource for future emerging infectious diseases.

Multi-source financing for tuberculosis treatment in China: key issues and challenges

Background:The End Tuberculosis(TB)Strategy of the World Health Organization highlights the need for patientcentered care and social protection measures that alleviate the financial hardships faced by many TB *** China,TB treatments are paid for by earmarked government funds,social health insurance,medical assistance for the poor,and out-of-pocket payments from *** part of Phase III of the China-Gates TB project,this paper introduces multi-source financing ofTB treatment in the three provinces of China and analyzes the challenges of moving towards universal coverage and its implications of multi-sectoral engagement for TB *** text:The new financing policies forTB treatment in the three provinces include increased reimbursement forTB outpatient care,linkage ofTB treatment with local poverty alleviation programs,and use of local government funds to cover some costs to reduce out-of-pocket ***,there are several challenges in reducing the financial burdens faced byTB ***,medical costs must be contained by reducing the profit-maximizing behaviors of ***,treatment forTB and multi-drug resistant TB(MDR-TB)is only available at county hospitals and city or provincial hospitals,respectively,and these hospitals have low reimbursement rates and high ***,many patients with TB and MDR-TB are at the edge of poverty,and therefore ineligible for medical assistance,which targets extremely poor *** addition,the local governments of less developed provinces often face fiscal difficulties,making it challenging to use of local government funds to provide financial support for TB *** suggest that stakeholders at multiple sectors should engage in transparent and responsive communications,coordinate policy developments,and integrate resources to improve the integration of social protection ***:The Chinese government is examining the establishment of multi-source financing forTB treatm
