Effect of a basic Chinese traditional diet in overweight patients

OBJECTIVE： To evaluate the effect of a basic Chi- nese traditional diet （BTCD） in overweight patients on body mass index （BMI）, lean mass, sense of hun- ger, and eating behaviour. METHODS： A total of 694 enrolled subjects （218 male and 476 female） were divided into two groups： group A undergoing a 1200-Kcal BTCD, and group B undergoing a 1200-Kcal standard western diet. RESULTS： From TO （before treatment） to T1 （6 weeks after treatment）, BMI was lowered in group A from （32.33±5.51） to （31.96±5.56） kg/m2, and in group B from （31.62±6.29） to （31.36±6.47） kglm2. After treatment, patients in group A lost more weight （0.37±0.52） kg than group B （0.26±0.79） kg （P=0.0044）. From TO to TI, the mean lean mass of group A decreased from （16.48±5.50） to （16.27± 5.45） kg. In group B, mean lean mass decreased from （16.93 ± 6.49） to （16.44 ± 6.29） kg. The differ- ence was significant （P=0.0078）. CONCLUSION： The two diets could lead to lowerBMI, improve lean mass as well as eating behaviour and sense of hunger. However, the BTCD was signif- icantly better than the western standard diet.

Experimental research has recently shown that acupuncture induces the formation of opioid-like peptides (OLPs) in animals. In order to provide further evidence, we tested the beta-endorphin levels and other parameters (VIP, lymphocyte subsets, NK cells and monocyte phagocytosis) in a group of 90 patients suffering from various painful disorders treated with acupuncture. Zusanli (St 36) and Hegu (LI 4) acupoints were selected. A homogeneous group of 30 subjects was used as control. Evaluation of the above parameters was made with 3 series of blood tests before treatment, 30 minutes and 24 hours after acupuncture treatment. In the acupuncture group, the following results were achieved: 1) A considerable increase in beta-endorphin levels remained high even 24 hours after acupuncture treatment. In addition, we demonstrated an inverted correlation between beta-endorphins and VIP; 2) 30 minutes after acupuncture session, 80% of the treated patients showed a significant increase of CD3 and CD4 values and an increase of CD8 24 hours after stimulation; 3) Monocyte phagocytosis was increased in 45% of the treated subjects 30 minutes from starting treatment, and in 100% of them after 24 hours. The percentage of NK cells was also increased in 40% of cases after 30 minutes, and in 50% after 24 hours. However, in the control group, no such significant changes in immune parameters were found.

OBJECTIVE:To compare the effects of a basic traditional Chinese diet with a Western standard diet on body mass index(BMI),lean body mass(LBD),and eating and hunger ***:A sample of 284 patients were randomized into 2 groups:group A(n = 142) followed a basic traditional Chinese diet(BCTD) and group B(n =142) followed a Western standard diet(WSD).Both diets were set at approximately 1200 *** patients enrolled were compared before treatment and 6 weeks after treatment,and then follow-ups were made at 1 year and 5 ***:In the BCTD group,BMI decreased by0.46 kg/m2 and LBM by 0.25 kg,versus respectively0.28 kg/m2 and 0.41 kg in the WSD *** of eating self-assessment,hunger measurement and psychophysical indices of health were also in favour of the ***:Outcomes show that the BCTD has a better effect on BMI and LBM,as well as over the medium/long term,and provides stronger psychophysical support to obese patients.

Objective:The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing world-wide. According to TCM, overweight and obesity share a common and fundamental deficiency, which is basically identifable with a failure in bolus transportation and absorption. As a result of this failure, the organism cannot assimilate adequate amounts of the nutrients required for physiological energy supply, peripheral tissues are inadequately fed, and the metabolic activity necessary for waste elimination is compromised. It was reported in the 2013 SAR conference that the TEA-ISCHAI group was embarking on an international, multisite acupuncture trial and issues associated with conducting such trialswere *** current presentation will provide an update of the trial in *** institutions(Changchun University of TCM and Hong Kong Baptist University, China, University of Technology, Sydney and Istituto paracelso, Italy) across four countries and regions collaborated on the trial, with the World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies acting as a coordinator.A randomized, placebo-controlled, patient- and assessor-blinded clinical trial with two parallel arms has been designed to evaluate the efficacy of a standardized acupuncture intervention.A pilot trial involving 40 subjects was conducted by the Changchun University of TCM and showed promising effects of the standardized acupuncture *** pilot study also helped to resolve many methodological issues in our study *** on the results of the pilot study, 96 subjects are being recruited to the trial, with each site enrolling 24 *** Disabilities of Arm Shoulder and Hand questionnaire will be the primary outcome measure, and secondary outcome measures include such objective measures as pain free grip strength and middle finger extension strength *** presentation will report on the study protocol, trial progress and experience in dealing with important issues such as standardization and monitoring of the trial.
