The field of 2-dimensional (2D) materials has witnessed a sharp growth since its inception and can majorly be attributed to the substantial technical and scientific developments, leading to significant improvements in their syntheses, characterization and applications. In the list of 2D materials, the relatively newer addition is phosphorene, which ideally consists of a single layer of black phosphorous. Keeping in mind the past, and ongoing research activities, this short account offers a brief overview of the present status and the associated challenges in the field of phosphorene-related research, with special emphasis on their syntheses, properties, applications and future opportunities.

Analysis of Enterobacteriaceae Producing Broad-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases in the Intensive Care Unit Setting

Strains of the Enterobacteriaceae family producing ESBL and AmpC broad-spectrum beta-lactamases that may survive in the hospital setting potentially cause infection in hospitalized patients due to contaminated objects or health care workers’ hands. Over a period of two months (November-December 2010), a single epidemiological study of microbial contamination of air, surfaces and health care workers (swabs from both nostrils and the right hand without a glove) was carried out at two intensive care units of the university Hospital olomouc, Czech Republic. The bacteria were identified using standard microbiological methods. Phenotypic detection of ESBL and AmpC enzymes and basic genetic analysis of ESBL- and AmpC-positive isolates was performed. The same approach was used to identify and analyze bacteria isolated from clinical samples of patients hospitalized at the above departments over the study period. From a total of 140 environmental samples collected over the study period, 21 isolates of the Enterobacteriaceae family were identified, with ESBL and AmpC production being detected in 4 and 7 isolates, respectively. Among patients’ clinical samples, 10 ESBL- and 6 AmpC-positive isolates were detected. No similarity was found between environmental isolates and strains isolated from patients.

Protein S-nitrosation differentially modulates tomato responses to infection by hemi-biotrophic oomycetes of Phytophthora spp.

Regulation of protein function by reversible S-nitrosation,a post-translational modification based on the attachment of nitroso group to cysteine thiols,has emerged among key mechanisms of NO signalling in plant development and stress responses.S-nitrosoglutathione is regarded as the most abundant low-molecular-weight S-nitrosothiol in plants,where its intracellular concentrations are modulated by S-nitrosoglutathione *** analysed modulations of S-nitrosothiols and protein S-nitrosation mediated by S-nitrosoglutathione reductase in cultivated Solanum lycopersicum(susceptible)and wild Solanum habrochaites(resistant genotype)up to 96h post inoculation(hpi)by two hemibiotrophic oomycetes,Phytophthora infestans and Phytophthora parasitica.S-nitrosoglutathione reductase activity and protein level were decreased by *** and *** infection in both genotypes,whereas protein S-nitrosothiols were increased by *** infection,particularly at 72 hpi related to pathogen biotrophy–necrotrophy *** levels of S-nitrosothiols localised in both proximal and distal parts to the infection site,which suggests together with their localisation to vascular bundles a signalling role in systemic responses.S-nitrosation targets in plants infected with *** identified by a proteomic analysis include namely antioxidant and defence proteins,together with important proteins of metabolic,regulatory and structural *** peroxidase S-nitrosation was observed in both genotypes in parallel to increased enzyme activity and protein level during *** pathogenesis,namely in the susceptible *** results show important regulatory functions of protein S-nitrosation in concerting molecular mechanisms of plant resistance to hemibiotrophic pathogens.
