AIM:To determine the distribution and associated factors of intraocular pressure(IOP) in an iranian elderly population 60 years of age and ***:The present report is part of the tehran Geriatric Eye study(TGES),a population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted on the residents of tehran 60 years of age and *** sampling was performed using multistage stratified random cluster sampling methods from 22 districts of tehran,*** and history information,blood samples,and blood pressure were collected from all *** examinations included measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,and slit-lamp *** IOP was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry(GAT).Corneal imaging and ocular biometry were performed using Pentacam ***:The data of 3892 eyes of 2124 individuals were analyzed for this *** mean age of the study participants was 66.49±5.31y(range:60 to 95y).The mean IOP was 15.2 mm Hg(95%CI:15.1 to 15.4),15.3 mm Hg(95%CI:15.1 to 15.5) and 15.1 mm Hg(95%CI:15.0 to 15.3) in all participants,males,and females,*** the study participants,1.3% had an IOP of ≥20 mm *** mean IOP increased from 15.1 mm Hg in the age group 60-64y to 16.3 mm Hg in the age group ≥*** to the final multiple GEE model,the IOP was statistically significantly higher in men than in *** the studied age groups,except for the 75-79-year-old age group,had significantly higher IOP compared to the 60-64-year-old age *** IOP was significantly higher in underweight compared to other body mass index ***,the IOP had a statistically significant direct relationship with the mean corneal power(mean CP),central corneal thickness(CCT),and systolic blood ***:The present study presents the distribution of IOP in an iranian elderly population.A higher IOP(within the range 14 to 17 mm Hg) is significantly associated with older age

How crystal configuration affects the position detection accuracy in pixelated molecular SPECT imaging systems?

Comparison of anterior segment parameters of the eye between type 2 diabetic with and without diabetic retinopathy and non-diabetic

AIM:To compare anterior segment parameters between two groups of type 2 diabetic with and without diabetic retinopathy(DR)and non-diabetic elderly subjects based on hemoglobin A1c(Hb A1c)levels and status of ***:This study was conducted on 997 residents aged 60y or over in tehran,*** group had Hb A1c level≥6.4%with no other systemic *** non-diabetic participants had normal eye findings and no systemic diseases.K1,K2,mean K,Q-value,anterior,central,posterior,and total corneal densitometric findings,anterior chamber volume(ACV),anterior chamber depth(ACD),corneal volume(CV),and pachymetry were measured by Pentacam ***:A total of 678 non-diabetic(39%male)and 319 diabetic(35%male)subjects with mean age of 66.31±5.23 and 67.22±4.96y were examined,*** statistically significant difference was found in anterior segment parameters between non-diabetic and diabetic groups(all P>0.05).However,middle,posterior,and total corneal densitometric values were statistically different between two groups af ter controlling the ef fects of confounders(P=0.014,0.007,and 0.042,respectively).Corneal densitometric values in all layers,ACD,and ACV were different between diabetic subjects with and without DR(all P<0.05).In the diabetic group,only corneal densitometric values had a negative relationship with fasting blood sugar(P<0.001).ACD and ACV had a negative correlation with Hb A1c levels(all P<0.05,r=-0.129 and-0.146,respectively).However,the relationships were not observed after controlling the confounders(P=0.938,0.466,respectively).CONCLUSION:Considering the higher densitometric values of the cornea and lower ACD and ACV in diabetic subjects with DR,it is suggested that the examiners should perform comprehensive retinal examinations when faced with such conditions.

The goal of this study was to synthesize nickel oxide nanoparticles(NiO-NPs)by the sol-gel method,which involved the use of salvia macrosiphon Boiss plant extract,Ni(NO3)2·6 H2 O as a capping agent,and a nickel precursor,*** synthesized NiO-NPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)spectrophotometer,X-ray diffraction(XRD),field electron scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX),thermo-gravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis(TGA/DTA)and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM)***,according to the results of UV-Vis,the gap band of nanoparticles was calculated to be in the range of about 2.9-3.9 *** photocatalytic activity of nanoparticles on methylene blue(MB)degradation was investigated and according to the results,about 80%MB was apparently degraded in the presence of NiO-NPs under UV-A light(11 W)after 5 h in pH^*** have evaluated the cytotoxicity of NiO-NPs on the multiple tumor cells by materials method,and all the utilized concentrations were observed to cause non-toxic effects;therefore,it can be suggested that these samples have the potential of being employed in different fields of medicine.

Receded near point of convergence as a predictor of mild cognitive impairment in the general geriatric population:results from a population-based study

AIM:To investigate the relationship between near point of convergence(NPC)and mild cognitive impairment(MCI)in the general elderly ***:The present report is a part of the tehran Geriatric Eye Study(TGES):a population-based crosssectional study conducted on individuals 60 years of age and above living in tehran,iran using the multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling *** status was assessed using the Persian version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE).All study participants underwent complete ocular examination including measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,cover testing,NPC measurement,and slit-lamp ***:The data of 1190 individuals were analyzed for this *** mean age of the participants analyzed was 66.82±5.42(60-92y)and 728(61.2%)of them were *** with MCI had a significantly more receded NPC compared to subjects with normal cognitive status(10.89±3.58 vs 7.76±2.71 cm,P8.5 cm(area under the curve:0.764,P8.50 cm undergo detailed cognitive screening for a definite diagnosis of *** this case,the necessary interventions can be carried out to slow down MCI progression to dementia.

First principles study and comparison of vibrational and thermodynamic properties of XBi(X=In,Ga,B,Al)

In the present work, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of XBi（X = B, Al, Ga, In） compounds are compared and investigated. The calculation is carried out using density functional theory（DFT） within the generalized gradient approximation（GGA） in a plane wave basis, with ultrasoft pseudopotentials. The lattice dynamical properties are calculated using density functional perturbation theory（DFPT） as implemented in Quantum ESPRESSO（QE） code. Thermodynamic properties involving phonon density of states（DOS） and specific heat at constant volume are investigated using quasiharmonic approximation（QHA） package within QE. The phonon dispersion diagrams for InBi, GaBi, BBi, and AlBi indicate that there is no imaginary phonon frequency in the entire Brillouin zone, which proves the dynamical stability of these materials. BBi has the highest thermal conductivity and InBi has the lowest thermal conductivity. AlBi has the largest and GaBi has the smallest reststrahlen band which somehow suggests the polar property of XBi materials. The phonon gaps for InBi, GaBi, BBi and AlBi are about 160 cm^-1, 150 cm^-1, 300 cm^-1, and 150 cm^-1, respectively. For all compounds,the three acoustic modes near the gamma point have a linear behavior. C_V is a function of T-3 at low temperatures while for higher temperatures it asymptotically tends to a constant as expected.

Tomography-based definition of keratoconus for Down syndrome patients

Background:To assess the diagnostic ability of Pentacam HR(Oculus Optikgeräte,GmbH,Wetzlar,Germany)tomographic indices in discriminating keratoconus(KC)and KC suspect(KCS)in 10-to 30-year-old patients with Down syndrome(DS).Methods:In this study,DS patients were enrolled through special needs schools,the National Down Syndrome Society,and relevant non-profit *** were made independently by two experienced *** Pentacam indices related to corneal thickness,volume,density,keratometry,power,shape,aberration,and elevation were *** each index,the accuracy for KC and KCS diagnosis was evaluated using discriminant analysis and the area under receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC).From each enrolled case,data from only one eye was entered in the ***:Analyses were performed on data from 25 KC,46 KCS,and 154 non-ectatic DS *** best discriminants for KC were anterior higher order aberrations(HOA)(cutoff>0.643,AUROC=0.879),posterior vertical coma(cutoff>0.0702μm,AUROC=0.875),anterior vertical coma(cutoff>0.4124μm,AUROC=0.868),and total HOA(cutoff>0.608,AUROC=0.867).The difference between AUROCs were not statistically significant(all P>0.05).For KCS,the best discriminants were minimum corneal thickness(cutoff≤480.0μm,AUROC=0.775),corneal volume(cutoff≤55.3μm,AUROC=0.727)and Belin Ambrosio display-total deviation(BAD-D)(cutoff>2.23,AUROC=0.718)with no significant difference between AUROCs(all P>0.05).Conclusions:In this sample of DS patients,best KC discriminators were HOA and coma which showed good diagnostic *** KCS,best predictors were minimum corneal thickness,corneal volume,and BAD-D with relatively good diagnostic *** a new set of KC diagnostic criteria for DS patients is suggested.

Signal promoting role of a p-type transition metal dichalcogenide used for the detection of ultra-trace amounts of diclofenac via a labeled aptasensor

A p-type transition metal dichalcogenide(WS2)was synthesized and hybridized with graphene oxide via a simple hydrothermal *** as-prepared material was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode for the fabrication of a simple,stable,and repeatable methylene blue-labeled“signal-off”aptasensor used for the sensitive determination of very low amounts of sodium diclofenac(DCF).The synthetic material,modification process,and role of WS2 in the current response enhancement were studied by X-ray diffraction,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,field emission scanning electron microscopy,high resolution transmission electron microscopy,Hall effect,cyclic voltammetry,differential pulse voltammetry,and electrochemical impedance ***,a wide linear range of DCF concentration(0.5-300 nmol/L),very low limit of detection(0.23 nmol/L),and good selectivity were obtained using the differential pulse voltammetry method with the assembled ***,the fabricated aptasensor was successfully developed for physiological real samples with significant recoveries.

AIM:To review recent innovations,challenges,and applications of small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE)extracted lenticule for treating ocular ***:A literature review was performed in the PubMed database,which was last updated on 30 December *** was no limit regarding *** authors evaluated the reference lists of the collected papers to find any relevant ***:Due to the simplicity and accuracy of modern femtosecond lasers and the extensive development of SMILE surgery,many healthy human corneal stromal lenticules were extracted during surgery,motivating some professionals to investigate the SMILE lenticule reusability in different ocular *** addition,new approaches had been developed to preserve,modify,and bioengineer the corneal stroma,leading to the optimal use of discarded byproducts such as lenticules from SMILE *** lenticules can be effectively re-implanted into the autologous or allogenic corneas of human subjects to treat refractive errors,corneal ectasia,and corneal perforation and serve as a patch graft for glaucoma drainage devices with better cosmetic ***:SMILE-extracted lenticules could be a viable alternative to human donor corneal tissue.

Image quality in positron emission tomography(PET)is affected by random and scattered coincidences and reconstruction *** this study,we investigated the effects of scattered and random coincidences from outside the field of view(FOV)on PET image quality for different reconstruction *** was performed on the Discovery 690 PET/CT scanner,using experimental configurations including the NEMA phantom(a body phantom,with six spheres of different sizes)with a signal background ratio of 4:*** NEMA phantom(phantom I)was scanned separately in a one-bed *** simulate the effect of random and scatter coincidences from outside the FOV,six cylindrical phantoms with various diameters were added to the NEMA phantom(phantom II).The 18 emission datasets with mean intervals of 15 min were acquired(3 min/scan).The emission data were reconstructed using different *** image quality parameters were evaluated by both *** in the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)in a 28-mm(10-mm)sphere of phantom II were 37.9%(86.5%)for ordered-subset expectation maximization(OSEM-only),36.8%(81.5%)for point spread function(PSF),32.7%(80.7%)for time of flight(TOF),and 31.5%(77.8%)for OSEM+PSF+TOF,respectively,indicating that OSEM+PSF+TOF reconstruction had the lowest noise levels and lowest coefficient of variation(COV)*** and scatter coincidences from outside the FOV induced lower SNR,lower contrast,and higher COV values,indicating image deterioration and significantly impacting smaller sphere *** reconstruction protocols,OSEM+PSF+TOF and OSEM+PSF showed higher contrast values for sphere sizes of 22,28,and 37 mm and higher contrast recovery coefficient values for smaller sphere sizes of 10 and 13 mm.
