Dynamic Changes in the Wetland Landscape Pattern of the Yellow River Delta from 1976 to 2016 Based on Satellite Data

The Yellow River Delta wetland is the youngest wetland ecosystem in China's warm temperate zone. To better understand how its landscape pattern has changed over time and the underlying factors responsible, this study analyzed the dynamic changes of wetlands using five Landsat series of images, namely MSS(Mulri Spectral Scanner), TM(Thematic Mapper), and OLI(Operational Land Imager) sensors in 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016. Object-oriented classification and the combination of spatial and spectral features and both the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index(NDWI), as well as brightness characteristic indices, were used to classify the images in eCognition software. Landscape pattern changes in the Yellow River Delta over the past 40 years were then delineated using transition matrix and landscape index methods. Results show that: 1) from1976 to 2016, the total area of wetlands in the study area decreased from 2594.76 to 2491.79 km^2, while that of natural wetlands decreased by 954.03 km^2 whereas human-made wetlands increased by 851.06 km^2. 2) The transformation of natural wetlands was extensive: 31.34% of those covered by Suaeda heteropteras were transformed into reservoirs and ponds, and 24.71% with Phragmites australis coverage were transformed into dry farmland. Some human-made wetlands were transformed into non-wetlands types: 1.55% of reservoirs and ponds became construction land, and likewise 21.27% were transformed into dry farmland. 3) From 1976 to 2016, as the intensity of human activities increased, the number of landscape types in the study area continuously increased. Patches were scattered and more fragmented. The whole landscape became more complex. In short, over the past 40 years, the wetlands of the Yellow River Delta have been degraded, with the area of natural wetlands substantially reduced. Human activities were the dominant forces driving these changes in the Yellow River Delta.

The production and application of organophosphate esters(OPEs)have dramatically increased in recent years due to their use as a replacement for brominated flame *** this study,13 OPEs(∑_(13)OPEs)were analyzed in indoor air samples from kitchens and living rooms in 14 residential homes in Beijing,*** concentrations of ∑_(13)OPEs in kitchen air samples(mean:13 ng/m^(3))were significantly(p<0.05)higher than in living room air samples(5.0 ng/m^(3)).In addition,paired window surface organic film samples were collected and analyzed to investigate film-air partitioning,exhibiting a mean concentration of ∑_(13)OPEs of 4100 ng/m^(2).The congener profiles showed that tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate(TCPP)was the predominant compound in both window film samples(48%)and the corresponding indoor air sample(56%).The estimated daily intakes(EDI)of OPEs via indoor air inhalation were 2.8 and 1.4 ng/kg/day for infants and adults,respectively,both of which are below the reference dose values(RfDs).Overall,these findings indicate that OPEs in the indoor air environment of residential homes in Beijing are not likely to pose a health risk to the general population.

Probabilistic ecological risk assessment of cadmium in the Bohai Sea using native saltwater species

Predicted no-effect concentration （PNEC） is often used in ecological risk assessment to determine low-risk concentrations for chemicals. In the present study, the chronic data from native saltwater species were used to calculated PNEC values using four methods： log-normal distribution （ETX 2.0）, log-triangle distribution （US EPA＇s water quality criteria procedure）, burr III distribution （BurrliOZ） and traditional assessment fac-tor （AF）. The PNECs that were calculated using four methods ranged from 0.08 μg/L to 1.8 μg/L. Three of the SSD-derived PNECs range from 0.94 to 1.8 μg/L, about a factor of two apart. To demonstrate the use of SSD-based PNEC values and comprehensively estimate the regional ecological risk for cadmium in surface water of the Bohai Sea, in the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizhou Bay, China, the dissolved cadmium con-centrations were measured and obtained 753 valid data covering 190 stations from July 2006 to November 2007. Based on three ecological risk assessment approaches, namely hazard quotient （HQ）, probabilistic risk quotient and joint probability curve （JPC）, the potential ecological risk of cadmium in surface water of the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizahou Bay were estimated. Overall, the ecological risk of cadmium to aquatic ecosystem in the whole Bohai Sea was at acceptable ecological risk level, the order of ecological risk was Liaodong Bay〉Bohai Bay〉Laizhou Bay. However, more concerns should be paid to aquatic ecological risk in the Liaodong Bay which is the home of many steel, metallurgy and petrochemical industrial in China.

Application of heat-activated peroxydisulfate process for the chemical cleaning of fouled ultrafiltration membranes

Na Cl O has been widely used to restore membrane flux in practical membrane cleaning processes,which would induce the formation of toxic halogenated *** this study,we proposed a novel heatactivated peroxydisulfate(heat/PDS)process to clean the membrane fouling derived from humic acid(HA).The results show that the combination of heat and PDS can achieve almost 100%recovery of permeate flux after soaking the HA-fouled membrane in 1 mmol/L PDS solution at 50℃ for 2 h,which is attributed to the changes of HA structure and enhanced detachment of foulants from *** properties of different treated membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),atomic force microscope(AFM),attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(ATRFTIR),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),demonstrating that the reversible and irreversible foulants could be effectively removed by heat/PDS *** filtration process and fouling mechanism of the cleaned membrane were close to that of the virgin membrane,illustrating the good reusability of the cleaned ***,heat/PDS which can avoid the generation of halogenated byproducts shows comparable performance to Na Cl O on membrane cleaning and high performance for the removal of fouling caused by sodium alginate(SA),HA-bovine serum albumin(BSA)-SA mixture and algae,further suggesting that heat/PDS would be a potential alternative for membrane cleaning in practical application.

Payment for ecosystem services(PES) is of great importance for the sustainable development of mountain areas, key hotspot regions for the provisioning of ecosystem services. At present, PES researches mainly focus on forest protection, carbon sink trading, and water protection. As an important industry in mountainous areas, cascade hydropower development has generated substantial economic benefits accompanied by social and ecological impacts. However, efficient PES mechanisms to deal with hydropower generation in mountain areas are still unavailable. Therefore, the lacking of PES in mountain systems limits the development of those areas, and compromise the sustainability of hydropower development. The critical reason lies in the lack of a scientific method that can quantitatively analyze the relationship of hydropower stations with a geographical scope at county level(i.e., quantifying the water yield service provided by each county within the cascade hydropower development basin), and with different hydropower enterprises. We use the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin of China as case study area, one of the major hydropower development basins in China. First, we used Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST) model to map water yield service. Then, we calculated the value of water yield service by relating the water yield to the gross output value of hydropower stations. We revealed the relationship(e.g., hydropower stations and identified counties) between the payers and the payees of ecosystem services through mapping and quantifying the provisioning regions in the supply of water yield service and the users(hydropower enterprises). Finally, we discussed the current situation of benefit distribution in cascade hydropower development basin based on the supply and use of the water yield service. Understanding changes in volatile compounds and fatty acids of Jincheng orange peel oil at different growth stages using GC-MS

Jincheng orange(Citrus sinensis Osbeck)is widely grown in Chongqing,China,and is commonly consumed because of its characteristic aroma contributed by the presence of diverse volatile *** changes in aroma during the development and maturation of fruit are indicators for ripening and harvest ***,the influence of growth stages on the volatile compounds in Jincheng orange remains *** addition,volatiles originate from fatty acids,most of which are the precursors of volatile *** this basis,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)was performed to elaborate the changes in volatile constituents and fatty acids as *** study tested proximately 60 volatiles and 8 fatty acids at 9 growth and development stages(AF1-AF9).Of those compounds,more than 92.00%of total volatiles and 87.50%of fatty acids were terpenoid and saturated fatty acids,*** shown in the PCA plot,the AF5,AF6,and AF9 stages were confirmed as completely segregated and appeared *** addition,most of the volatiles and fatty acids first increased at the beginning of the development stage,then decreased from the AF6 development stage,and finally increased at the AF9 maturity ***,the highest contents of terpenoid,alcohols,aldehydes,ketones,and saturated fatty acids in Jincheng orange peel oil were d-limonene,linalool,octanal,cyclohexanone,and stearic acid during development stages,*** results found that the growth stages significantly affected the volatile constituents and precursors in Jincheng orange peel oil.

Distribution characteristics and indicator significance of Dechloranes in multi-matrices at Ny-lesund in the Arctic

In recent years, Dechloranes have been widely detected in the environment around the ***, understanding and knowledge of Dechloranes in remote regions, such as the Arctic,remain lacking. Therefore, the concentrations of 5 Dechloranes in surface seawater, sediment,soil, moss, and dung collected from Ny-lesund in the Arctic were measured with the concentrations 93 pg/L, 342, 325, 1.4, and 258 pg/g, respectively, which were much lower than those in Asian and European regions. The mean ratios of anti-Dechlorane Plus（DP） to total DP（fanti） in seawater, sediment, soil, moss, dung, and atmospheric samples were 0.36, 0.21, 0.18,0.27, 0.66, and 0.43, respectively. Results suggested that the main source of DP in seawater,sediment, soil, and moss was long-range atmospheric transport. However, the ratio identified in dung was different, for which the migration behavior of the organism is probably the main source of DP.

Methane emission via sediment and water interface in the Bohai Sea,China

Sediment is recognized as the largest reservoir and source of methane(CH_(4))in the ocean,especially in the shallow coastal *** date,few data of CH_(4)concentration in sediment have been reported in the China shelf *** this study,we measured CH_(4)concentration in sediment and overlying seawater columns,and conducted an incubation experiment in the Bohai Sea in May ***_(4)concentration was found to be ranged from 3.075 to 1.795μmol/L in sediment,which was 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that in overlying seawater *** surface sediment was an important source of CH_(4),while bottom seawater acted as its ***,the net emission rate via sediment water interface(SWI)was calculated as 2.45μmol/(m^(2)·day)based on the incubation experiment at station73,and the earthquake may enhance CH_(4)release from sediment to seawater column in the eastern Bohai Sea.

Hexabromocyclododecane-induced Genotoxicity in Cultured Human Breast Cells through DNA Damage

To investigate the genotoxicity and reveal the potential toxicological mechanisms of Hexabromocyclododecane （HBCD）, human breast cells HBL-100 were exposed to a sequence of HBCD concentrations （0, 5, 10, and 50 mg/L） for 24 h. With a series of zymology and molecular biology methods, we found that HBCD induced dose-dependent oxidative stress on HBL-100 DNA. As revealed in q RT-PCR, activated prognostic factor ATM down-regulated tumor suppressor gene BRCA1 and prompted DNA repair genes h OGG1 and h MTH1 expression in lower concentrations of HBCD （〈 10 mg/L）. However, DNA repair were inhibited as well as cell proliferation rate by higher concentrations of HBCD （50 mg/L）. The results inferred that the genotoxicity of HBCD was dose-dependent and related to DNA repair pathway.

Analysis of the inter-annual variability and southward expansion of red tides in the Zhejiang coastal waters from 1981 to 2018

A time series dataset spanning 39 years(1981-2018) on red tide events in Zhejiang coastal waters was used to study the characteristics of inter-annual spatial and temporal variations. A distinct inter-annual pattern characterized by low frequency, explosive growth and fluctuating decline stages was found over the studied time scale. Most red tide events occurred in parallel to the bathymetric contour, and 95.4% were located to the west of the 50 m isobath. Additionally, the high-incidence area of red tides is expanding southward. In this paper, local sea surface temperature(SST), mariculture area and secondary industry growth rate are introduced and identified as the main factors influencing the nutrient and hydrometeorological conditions. A multivariate nonlinear regression equation based on these factors was constructed, and the goodness of fit coefficient was 0.907. The causes of the annual variation and high-frequency area in the southward expansion were quantitatively analyzed based on the proposed regression model. Finally, the results indicated that 68.7% of the annual occurrence variation of red tide was due to the SST and mariculture area, which are the main impact factors;however,secondary industry growth could compensate for the nutrient deficiency caused by the sharp mariculture area reduction and decreased SST. The background nutrient level, which is elevated by coastal economic development, especially secondary industry, is the main determinant of the southward expansion. Although the trend of the southward expansion of high-frequency areas has not changed, the red tide frequency in coastal cities has decreased by half and remained at a stable level after 2010 due to substantial economic restructuring and environmental protection.
