Chromosomal evolution is widely considered an important driver of speciation because it can promote the establishment of reproductive *** reorganization is also expected to affect the mea n phe no type,as well as its developme nt and patter ns of phenotypic in tegrati on,through processes such as variation in genetic linkage between quantitative trait loci or between regulatory regions and their *** we explore the relationship between chromosomal evolution and phenotypic integration by analyzing a well-known house mouse parapatric contact zone between a highly derived Robertsonian(Rb)race(2n=22)and populations with standard karyotype(2n=40).Populations with hybrid karyotypes are scattered throughout the hybrid zone connecting the two parental *** mandible shape data and geometric morphometries,we test the hypothesis that patter ns of in tegration progressively diverge from the"normal"integration pattern observed in the standard race as they accumulate Rb *** find that the main pattern of integration observed between the posterior and anterior part of the mandible can be largely attributed to *** find no support for a gradual increase in divergence from normal patterns of integration as fusions ***,however,we find that the derived Rb race(2n=22)has a distinct allometric trajectory compared with the standard *** results suggest that either individual fusions disproportionately affect patterns of integration or that there are mechanisms which"purge"extreme variants in hybrids(*** fitness of hybrid shape).

A series of isopentenyl-derived unsaturated alkyl ethers 19-31 of racemic deoxyisopodophyllotoxin were designed and synthesized. For comparison, compound 32 with a benzyl group at the same position was also prepared. The cytotoxicities of the synthetic compounds have been screened for six human tumor cell lines such as KB, BEL-7404, A549, Hela, PC-3 and CNE. The results showed that two of them exhibited significant cytotoxicities with their IC50 values on selected cell lines at μmol/L scale.

There is increasing evidence that pathogens do not only elicit direct defense responses, but also cause pronounced changes in primary carbohydrate metabolism. Cell-wall-bound invertases belong to the key regulators of carbohydrate partitioning and source-sink relations. Whereas studies have focused so far only on the transcriptional induction of invertase genes in response to pathogen infection, the role of post-translational regulation of invertase activity has been neglected and was the focus of the present study. Expression analyses revealed that the high mRNA level of one out of three proteinaceous invertase inhibitors in source leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana is strongly repressed upon infection by a virulent strain of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. This repression is paralleled by a decrease in invertase inhibitor activity. The physiological role of this regulatory mechanism is revealed by the finding that in situ invertase activity was detectable only upon infection by P. syringae. In contrast, a high invertase activity could be measured in vitro in crude and cell wall extracts prepared from both infected and non-infected leaves. The discrepancy between the in situ and in vitro invertase activity of control leaves and the high in situ invertase activity in infected leaves can be explained by the pathogen-dependent repression of invertase inhibitor expression and a concomitant reduction in invertase inhibitor activity. The functional importance of the release of invertase from post-translational inhibition for the defense response was substantiated by the application of the competitive chemical invertase inhibitor acarbose. Posttranslational inhibition of extracellular invertase activity by infiltration of acarbose in leaves was shown to increase the susceptibility to P. syringae.
