Mechanical behavior of colonic an.s.omosis in experimental settin.s.as a measure of wound repair and tissue integrity

AIM: To determine the mechanical properties of an.s.o- motic colonic tissue in experimental settin.s.and there- fore give a measure of wound healing. METHODs: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were used as ex- perimental models of an.s.omotic tissue integrity. On the 5th post-operative day, the tensile strength was measured by application of an axial force, providing a quantitative measure of an.s.omotic dehiscence and leakage. REsULTs: Diagrams of the load as a function of the time [P = P (t)] and of the displacement also as a func- tion of time [Δs = Δs (t)] were recorded for each test, permitting the design of the load versus the displace- ment diagram and thus providing significant data about the critical values of an.s.omotic failure. Quantitative data were obtained concerning the an.s.omotic strength of both control specimens (healthy rats), as well as spec- imens from non-healthy rats for comparison. COnCLUsIOn: This experimental model provides an excellent method of measuring an.s.omotic strength. Despite the relative small number of specimens used, this method provides an accurate way of measuring wound repair. More experimental measuremen.s.need to be performed to correlate emerging tensile strength val-ues to an.s.omotic failure.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the most frequent primary liver malignancy and the third cause of cancer-related death in the Western Countries. The well-established causes of HCC are chronic liver infections such as hepatitis B virus or chronic hepatitis C virus, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, consumption of aflatoxins and tobacco smocking. Clinical presentation varies widely; patien.s.can be asymptomatic while symptomatology exten.s.from right upper abdominal quadrant paint and weight loss to obstructive jaundice and lethargy. Imaging is the first key and one of the most important aspects at all stages of diagn.s.s, therapy and follow-up of patien.s.with HCC. The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging system remains the most widely classification.s.stem used for HCC management guidelin.s. Up until now, HCC remains a challenge to early diagn.s., and treat effectively; treating management is focused on hepatic resection, orthotopic liver transplantation, ablative therapies, chemoembolization and systemic therapies with cytotocix drugs, and targeted agen.s. This review article describes the current evidence on epidemiology, symptomatology, diagn.s.s and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

serum Calprotectin and Prealbumin Levels among Ovarian Cancer Patien.s.Aged 30 - 45 Years

Purpose: serum calprotectin and prealbumin have been previously linked with ovarian cancer. However, to date, their effectiven.s. in the diagn.s.s of the disease remains uncertain. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether serum prealbumin and calprotectin correlate with the stage and type of histologic diagn.s.s. Materials-Methods: In the present study, we included 80 women aged 30 - 45 years that had either primary ovarian cancer (stages 1 and 2) with elevated levels of CA-125 (n = 40) or were healthy (n = 40). serum calprotectin and prealbumin levels were assessed using ELIsA kits. statistical analysis was performed with sPss v.20.0 statistical software. Results: Both plasma prealbumin and calprotectin levels were significantly different in patien.s.with ovarian cancer compared to healthy controls. specifically, serum prealbumin levels showed a level towards decreasing as the stage of the disease advanced (21.2 (15.5 - 30.6) in healthy controls, 12.8 (6.9 - 16) for patien.s.with stage 1 disease and 9.9 (4.0 - 15.5) for patien.s.with stage 2 disease p p Conclusions: Both prealbumin and calprotectin.s.em to be useful markers for the identification of patien.s.suffering from ovarian cancer.

Objective: To evaluate transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) with Echolaser® (Echolaser® TPLA, Elesta s.p.A., Calenzano, Italy) as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) using the Delphi consensus ***: Italian and international experts on BPH and PCa participated in a collaborative consensus project. During two roun.s. they expressed their opinions on Echolaser® TPLA for the treatment of BPH and PCa answering online questionnaires on indications, methodology, and potential complications of this technology. Level of agreement or disagreement to reach consensus was set at 75%. If the consensus was not achieved, questions were modified after each round. A final round was performed during an online meeting, in which results were discussed and ***: Thirty-two out of forty invited experts participated and consensus was reached on all topics. Agreement was achieved on recommending Echolaser® TPLA as a treatment of BPH in patien.s.with ample range of prostate volume, from 80 mL (80%), comorbidities (100%), antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment (96%), indwelling catheter (77%), and strong will of preserving ejaculatory function (100%). Majority of responden.s.agreed that Echolaser® TPLA is a potential option for the treatment of localized PCa (78%) and recommended it for low-risk PCa (90%). During the final round, experts concluded that it can be used for intermediate-risk PCa and it should be proposed as an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy for patien.s.with strong will of avoiding urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Almost all participan.s.agreed that the transperineal approach of this organ.s.aring technique is safer than transrectal and transurethral approaches typical of other techniques (97% of agreement among experts). Colorectal cancer(CRC) constitutes the third most frequently reported malignancy in the male population and the second most common in women in the last two decades. Colon carcinogen.s.s is a complex, multifactorial event, resulting from genetic and epigenetic aberrations, the impact of environmental factors, as well as the disturbance of the gut microbial ecosystem. The relationship between the intestinal microbiome and carcinogen.s.s was relatively undervalued in the last decade. However, its remarkable effect on metabolic and immune functions on the host has been in the spotlight as of recent years. There is a strong relationship between gut microbiome dysbiosis, bowel pathogenicity and responsiven.s. to anti-cancer treatment;including immunotherapy. Modifications of bacteriome consistency are closely associated with the immunologic response to immunotherapeutic agen.s. This condition that implies the necessity of gut microbiome manipulation. Thus, creatingan optimal response for CRC patien.s.to immunotherapeutic agen.s. In this paper, we will review the current literature observing how gut microbiota influence the response of immunotherapy on CRC patien.s.

Endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)and endoscopic submucosal dissection(EsD)are well-established therapeutics for gastrointestinal neoplasias,but complications after EMR/EsD,including bleeding and perforation,result in additional treatment morbidity and even threaten the lives of ***,designing biomaterials to treat gastric bleeding and wound healing after endoscopic treatment is highly desired and remains a ***,a series of injectable pH-responsive selfhealing adhesive hydrogels based on acryloyl-6-aminocaproic acid(AA)and AA-g-n-hydroxysuccinimide(AA-n.s.were developed,and their great potential as endoscopic sprayable bioadhesive materials to efficiently stop hemorrhage and promote the wound healing process was further demonstrated in a swine gastric hemorrhage/wound *** hydrogels showed a suitable gelation time,an autonomous and efficient self-healing capacity,hemostatic properties,and good *** the introduction of AA-n.s.as a micro-cross-linker,the hydrogels exhibited enhanced adhesive strength.A swine gastric hemorrhage in vivo model demonstrated that the hydrogels showed good hemostatic performance by stopping acute arterial bleeding and preventing delayed bleeding.A gastric wound model indicated that the hydrogels showed excellent treatment effects with significantly enhanced wound healing with type I collagen deposition,α-sMA expression,and blood vessel *** injectable self-healing adhesive hydrogels exhibited great potential to treat gastric woun.s.after endoscopic treatment.

Role of fetuin A in the diagn.s.s and treatment of joint arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive disease which includes the intervention of several cytokin.s. macrophage metalleinoprotein.s.s reaction, leading to the degradation of the local cartilage but also having an impact on the serum acute phase proteins(APPs). subsequently, biomarkers seem to be essential to estimate its progression and the need for any surgical intervention.s.ch as total arthroplasty, but also can be used as therapeutic agen.s. Recently, among APPs, fetuin A drew attention regarding its possible anti-inflammatory role in animal models but also as a therapeutic agent in the inflammatory joint disease in clinical trials. In contrast with other APPs such as C-reactive protein, fetuin A appears to be lower in the serum of patien.s.with degenerative joint disease in comparison with the healthy on.s. and also acts as an antagon.s. of the anti-proliferative potential of transforming growth factor-b(TGF-b) cytokin.s. Because of its lower serum levels in arthritis, an unregulated binding of TGF-b and bone morphogenetic proteins takes place leading to further arthritic lesions. The purpose of the present review is to assess the current evidence regarding the multipotent role of the alpha-2-Hsglycoprotein or as also known Fetuin-a in animal models but also as a biomarker of the degenerative joint arthritis in clinical trials.

Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of congestive heart failure. novel strategies such as directly reprogramming cardiac fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes are an exciting area of investigation for repair of injured myocardial tissue. The ultimate goal is to rebuild functional myocardium by transplanting exogenous stem cells or by activating native stem cells to induce endogenous repair. Cell-based myocardial restoration, however, has not penetrated broad clinical practice yet. Plateletrich plasma, an autologous fractionation of whole blood containing high concentrations of growth factors, has been.s.own to safely and effectively enhance healing and angiogen.s.s primarily by reparative cell signaling. In this review, we collected all recent advances in novel therapies as well as experimental evidence demonstrating the role of platelet-rich plasma in ischemic heart disease, focusing on aspects that might be important for future successful clinical application.
