Background: To evaluate the safety of immediate sequential bilateral cataract extraction (ISBCE) with respect to indications, visual outcomes, complications, benefits and disadvantages. Methods: This is a retrospective review of all ISBCEs performed at Kantonsspital Winterthur, Switzerland, between April 2000 and September 2013. The case notes of 500 eyes of 250 patients were reviewed. Of these 500 eyes, 472 (94.4%) had a straight forward phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation;21 (4.2%) had a planned extracapsular cataract extraction;4 (0.8%) had an intracapsular cataract extraction and 3 (0.6%) had a combined phacoemulsification with trabeculectomy. Results: Over 66% of eyes achieved improved visual acuity (at least 3 Snellen lines) following ISBCE. Median preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.5 LogMAR;the interquartile range was [0.4, 1] LogMAR. At one week control the median BCVA was 0.3 LogMAR, IQR [0.1, 0.5] LogMAR. At one month the median BCVA was 0.15 LogMAR, IQR [0.05, 0.3] (p < 0.01). There were no sight-threatening intraoperative or postoperative complications observed. Conclusions: ISBCE is an effective and safe option with high degree of patient satisfaction. The relative benefits of ISBCE should be balanced against the theoretically enhanced risks.

Background:The purpose of our study is to examine the long(5-year)efficacy of the all surface laser ablation(ASLA)combined with accelerated cross-linking(CXL)for the treatment of myopia without the use of mitomycin-C(MMC).Methods:This retrospective study consisted of 202 eyes of 118 myopic(SD:2.41,range:−1.50 to−12.75 D)patients(44 males,74 females).Mean age was 28.50 years(SD:6.45,range:18 to 51 years)that underwent ASLA with accelerated CXL for the treatment of their ***:The patients underwent routine postoperative assessment on the 1st,3rd,7th day and in the 1st,3rd,6th and 12th month,30th month(±6 months),4th and 5th *** mean spherical equivalent(SEq)refractive error changed from−6.41±2.41 D preoperatively to−0.02±0.53 D at 5 years *** haze score was 0.18,0.25 and 0.28 at 1,3 and 6 months *** 12 months after the treatment,no eyes had significant corneal haze and in all the following postoperative time intervals the haze traces were ***:ASLA combined with accelerated CXL(ASLA-XTRA)appears to be safe,efficacious and offering very good refractive *** potential additional benefits of this modality are the stabilizing effect of the refraction and its sterilization effect on the treated cornea without the potential side effects of MMC.

AIM：To compare the efficacy of single-session 360-degree selective laser trabeculoplasty（SLT） for reduction of intraocular pressure（IOP） in patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma（PXFG） and primary open angle glaucoma（POAG）.· METHODS：This is a single-center,prospective,nonrandomized comparative *** older than 18 years of age with uncontrolled PXFG or POAG eyes requiring additional therapy while on maximally tolerated IOP-lowering medications were *** primary outcome measure changed in IOP from *** was defined as IOP reduction ≥20%from baseline without any additional IOP-lowering *** patients were examined at 1d,1wk,1,3,6,9,12 mo after SLT.· RESULTS：Nineteen patients（20 eyes） with PXFG and27 patients（28 eyes） with POAG were included in the *** the visual fields mean deviation was-2.88（±1.67）in the POAG and-3.1（±1.69） in the PXFG groups（P=0.3）.The mean（±SD） IOP was 22.9（±3.7） mm Hg in the POAG group and 25.7（±4.4） mm Hg in the PXFG group at baseline and decreased to 18.4（±3.2） and 18.0（±3.9） mm Hg in the POAG group（P〈0.001 and P=0.02）,and to 17.9（±4.0） and 21.0（±6.6） mm Hg in the PXFG group（P〈0.001 and P=0.47） at 6 and 12 mo,*** number of medications was 2.6（±0.8） in the POAG group and 2.5（±0.8） in the PXFG group at baseline,and did not change at all follow-up visits in both groups（P =0.16 in POAG and 0.57 in PXFG）.Based on Kaplan-Meier survival analysis,the success rate was 75%in the POAG group compared to 94.1%in the PXFG group（P=0.08;Log-rank test） at 6mo,and 29.1%and 25.0%at 12 mo,respectively（P=0.9;Log-rank）.· CONCLUSION：The 360-degree SLT is an effective and well-tolerated therapeutic modality in patients with POAG and PXFG by reducing IOP without any change in number of *** response was more pronounced early in the postoperative period in patients with PXFG whereas there was no statistically significant difference at 12-month follow-up. 〈/tr〉
