Aging is a slow and progressive natural process that compromises the normal functions of cells,tissues,organs,and *** aging of the hypothalamic median eminence(ME),a structural gate linking neural and endocrine systems,may impair hormone release,energy homeostasis,and central sensing of circulating molecules,leading to systemic and reproductive ***,the molecular and cellular features of ME aging remain largely ***,we describe the transcriptional landscape of young and middleaged mouse ME at single-cell resolution,revealing the common and cell type-specific transcriptional changes with *** transcriptional changes in cell-intrinsic programs,cell-cell crosstalk,and cellextrinsic factors highlight five molecular features of ME aging and also implicate several potentially druggable targets at cellular,signaling,and molecular ***,our results suggest that vascular and leptomeningeal cells may lead the asynchronized aging process among diverse cell types and drive local inflammation and cellular senescence via a unique ***,our study uncovers how intrinsic and extrinsic features of each cell type in the hypothalamic ME are changed by the aging process,which will facilitate our understanding of brain aging and provide clues for efficient anti-aging intervention at the middle-aged stage.

We report a dual-contrast method of simultaneously measuring and visualizing the volumetric structural information in live biological samples in three-dimensional(3D) space. By introducing a direct way of deriving the 3D scattering potential of the object from the synthesized angular spectra, we obtain the quantitative subcellular morphology in refractive indices(RIs) side-by-side with its fluorescence signals. The additional contrast in RI complements the fluorescent signal, providing additional information of the targeted zones. The simultaneous dual-contrast 3D mechanism unveiled interesting information inaccessible with previous methods, as we demonstrated in the human immune cell(T cell) experiment. Further validation has been demonstrated using a Monte Carlo model.

Neuroblastoma(NB),a frequently occurring pediatric disease,is derived from the neural crest cells in the sympathetic ganglia and adrenal ***,it is a heterogeneous tumor consisting of many affection factors,such as the diagnosis time within the first year and the diversity of the histology and genetic *** improved outcomes in NB patients,it remains a difficult clinical problem and requires new therapeutic targets and *** somatic acquired activation point mutations in the receptor tyrosine kinase anaplastic lymphoma kinase(ALK)represent potential targets for treating ***,we review the underlying mechanisms of ALK in NB development,the latest available strategies to block ALK constitutive activity to treat NB,and discuss the current clinical challenges of resistance to these therapies and the strategies to overcome them.

Prognostic value of M30/M65 for outcome of hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure

AIM: To determine the prognostic value of circulating indicators of cell death in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection as the single etiology. METHODS: Full length and caspase cleaved cytokeratin 18 (detected as M65 and M30 antigens) represent circulating indicators of necrosis and apoptosis. M65 and M30 were identified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 169 subjects including health. controls (n = 33), patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB, n = 55) and patients with ACLF (n = 81). According to the 3-mo survival period, ACLF patients were defined as having spontaneous recovery (n = 33) and non-spontaneous recovery which included deceased patients and those who required liver transplantation (n = 48). RESULTS: Both biomarker levels significantly increased gradually as liver disease progressed (for M65: P = 0.80) in identifying ACLF from CHB patients. Interestingly, it is worth noting that the M30/M65 ratio was significantly different between spontaneous and non-spontaneous recovery in ACLF patients (P = 0.032). The prognostic value of the M30/M65 ratio was compared with the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) and child-Pugh scores at the 3-mo survival period, the AUC of the M30/M65 ratio was 0.66 with a sensitivity of 52.9% and the highest specificity of 92.6% (MELD:AUC = 0.71; sensitivity, 79.4%; specificity, 63.0%; child-Pugh: AUC = 0.77; sensitivity, 61.8%; specificity, 88.9%). CONCLUSION: M65 and M30 are strongly associated with liver disease severity. The M30/M65 ratio may be a potential prognostic marker for spontaneous recovery in patient

Characteristics of Induced Abortion in China in the 1990s

Objective To understand the characteristics of induced abortion in China in the 1990s, and to find out the influential factors. Methods The overall number of induced abortions, calculate cohort induced abortion frequency, explore the impact of a child＇s sex and the number of previous children on induced abortions were estimated by using the data from the ＂national Poptdation and reproductive health.Survey＂ conducted by the national Family Planning commission in November 1997. Results Induced abortions in China had their own characteristics, which were far different from other countries. The main difference was led by the fact that the country was driven by an implemented family planning program and nationwide population policies. The key cause of induced abortions was due to an inconsistentT with the requirements of the family planning policy. However, as a result of effective and prevalent contraception, the rates of induced abortions were not quite high in the 1990s, when compared with other countries. Even though, in the early 1990s, the government had reinforced the family planning program through administration and legislation, unlike during the early 1980s when the one-child policy was implemented, the induced abortion rate and the number of induce abortions did not increase as the fertility rate substantially decreased. Conclusion This finding implies that the fertility declines in the 1990s were not caused by the number of induced abortions. The transition of the fertility ideology of the people has played an important role in the fertility decline, as institutional reform and socioeconomic development are implemented.

Drip irrigation incorporating water conservation measures:Effects on soil water-nitrogen utilization,root traits and grain production of spring maize in semi-arid areas

The Northeast Plain is the largest maize production area in China,and drip irrigation has recently been proposed to cope with the effects of frequent droughts and to improve water use efficiency(WUE).In order to develop an efficient and environmentally friendly irrigation system,drip irrigation experiments were conducted in 2016-2018 incorporating different soil water conservation measures as follows:(1)drip irrigation under plastic film mulch(PI),(2)drip irrigation under biodegradable film mulch(BI),(3)drip irrigation incorporating straw returning(SI),and(4)drip irrigation with the tape buried at a shallow soil depth(OI);with furrow irrigation(FI)used as the *** results showed that PI and Bl gave the highest maize yield,as well as the highest WUE and nitrogen use efficiency(NUE)because of the higher root length density(RLD)and better heat conditions during the vegetative *** compared with BI,PI consumed more soil water in the 20-60 and 60-100 cm soil layers,and accelerated the progress of root and leaf senescence due to a larger root system in the top 0-20 cm soil layer and a higher soil temperature during the reproductive *** was effective in improving soil water and nitrate contents,and promoted RLD in deeper soil layers,thereby maintaining higher physiological activity during the reproductive *** resulted in higher nitrate levels in the deep 60-100 cm soil layer,which increased the risk of nitrogen losses by leaching compared with the drip irrigation *** in the 0-20 cm soil layer was highly positively correlated with yield,WUE and NUE(P<0.001),but it was negatively correlated with root nitrogen use efficiency(NRE)(P<0.05),and the correlation was weaker in deeper soil *** concluded that Bl had advantages in water-nitrogen utilization and yield stability response to drought stress,and thus is recommended for environmentally friendly and sustainable maize production in Northeast China.

Application Research of “3+1” Mode for Birth Defects Monitoring

Objective To explore the ＂3＋1＂ monitoring mode for birth defects and quality control measures based on the population, and to obtain the related information data for birth defects.Methods With the community population as the basis, adopting the unified monitoring scheme dominant by the leadership and administration of government, with districts （counties） as the monitoring sites, the ＂3＋1 ＂ monitoring mode for birth defects was based on a complete monitoring team with the combination of villages/residents＇ committees, townships （towns）, counties （districts） and the municipality. Demonstration research was carried out in the pilot districts/counties in Chongqing City.Results Birth defects population monitoring system based on population and family planning management and service network was established, and during 2005 and *** research was carried out for the monitoring methods among birth defects population in the pilot districts （counties）, obtaining the relevant information in regional birth defects, with a monitoring coverage of over 99%. Conclusion Fully utilizing the birth management functions of Population and Famlty Planning System and the advantages of service networks, long term, dynamic birth defects monitoring system based on community population was established, with the integration of birth defects monitoring and regular reproductive health.services, obtaining overall birth defects occurrence information in details, providing scientific basis for the government to formulate scientific, practical, economic and effective birth defects intervention policy, so as to improve the quality of the population.

China’s Low Fertility Rate from the Perspective of Gender and Development

Fertility and other demographic indicators do not simply follow the ups and downs of *** order to understand more objectively and accurately the degree of acceptance,impact and actual effect of the unconditional two-child policy(quanmian erhai zhengce)as well as the long-term trend of China’s fertility rate,we need to proceed from the institutional and cultural context of Chinese *** complex social mechanisms behind the low fertility situation in China should be interpreted from the perspective of gender and *** on international theories and lessons learned from past experience,we find,from a gender and development perspective,that women’s workfamily conflict is the key to examining China’s low fertility rate;designing public policy with a gender perspective to promote the participation of government,society,business and multiple male and female actors is a social mechanism that alleviates women’s work-family conflict;and advocating the Marxist gender ideology of equality between men and women and abandoning traditional Confucian patriarchal and familial thinking are the ideological basis for alleviating women’s work-family *** view of the dual identity of women as material producers and social reproducers,promoting the simultaneous development of gender equality in the public and private sectors and alleviating women’s work-family conflicts will make a positive contribution to maintaining a certain fertility rate and level of economic development.

Abnormal Adipokines Associated with Various Types of Obesity in Chinese children and Adolescents

Objective To explore the role of adipokines including insulin, resistin, leptin, adiponectin, acylation stimulating protein （ASP） and complement C3 （C3） in various types of obesity （peripheral obesity, abdominal obesity and mixed obesity） in Chinese children and adolescents, and their relationships with body size and pubertal development. Methods children and adolescents （n=3 508） aged 6 to 18 years, with 1 788 boys and 1 720 girls were assessed for body mass index, waist circumference, pubertal development, blood insulin, resistin, leptin, adiponectin, ASP and C3 levels. Three types of obesity [peripheral obesity （n=43）, abdominal obesity （n=473）, mixed obesity （n=1 187）] and non‐obese control （n=1 805） were defined with combined use of Chinese body mass index and waist circumference criteria. Results Serum resistin, leptin and adiponectin levels were higher in girls than those in boys （all P0.01）. Insulin and leptin increased and adiponectin decreased across five Tanner stages in both girls and boys （all P0.001）, while ASP changed only in girls （P0.001） and C3 only in boys （P0.001）. Insulin, leptin and ASP were higher, but adiponectin was lower in all three types of obesity vs. the non‐obese control （all P0.05）. The greatest abnormalities of all six adipokines were found in the mixed obesity group. With inclusion of body mass index and waist circumference in simultaneous regression analyses, both body size indices were independently and significantly correlated with insulin, leptin and adiponectin after age and gender adjustment. Compared with waist circumference, the body mass index was stronger in interpreting insulin, leptin, adiponectin and ASP levels, whereas it was weaker in explaining variance of plasma C3. Conclusions Obese children have a worse metabolic profile with high insulin, resistin, leptin, ASP and C3, and low adiponectin levels.
