Are High School Students Ready to Stop the Bleed from Injuries? Needs Assessment in a Low Resource Country

Background: Life-threatening bleeding is a major cause of trauma-related deaths. Stop the Bleed—Active bleeding control (ABC) program in hyderabad recently showed that lay first responders can be effectively trained. However, the willingness of high school students to train in bleeding control is unknown. We report Stop the Bleed training needs assessment from high schools in India and estimate the potential multiplier effect. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 12 randomly selected schools in hyderabad. The study was to understand current knowledge, skills and willingness to get trained and respond to life-threatening bleeding from injuries. 107 Participants (35 Teachers and 72 students) were purposively selected for telephonic interviews with a structured questionnaire. Results: Response rate was 93% overall. 80% of participants have never been trained in bleeding control. 84% reported willingness to be trained, train others and help bleeding victims. All the teachers reported that stop the bleed training would be useful in high schools. 70.6% of teachers recommended that training could start from middle school (10 to 15 years), 47% preferred the online training mode. Only 20% of participants had prior training in lifesaving first aid and 32% did not know the number of emergency medical services (EMS). Each trained participant has the potential to train 3 to 4 people at the household level and perhaps more at the community level. Conclusion: The surveyed schools in hyderabad do not have the knowledge, skills, or training curriculum in Stop the Bleed. Students and teachers are willing to be trained and train others, with great potential for a “multiplier-effect” in the community.

Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Boswellia ovalifoliolata bark extracts

Paracetamol(PCM) hepatotoxicity is related to reactive oxygen species(ROS) formation and excessive oxidative stress; natural antioxidant compounds have been tested as an alternative therapy. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective activity of an alcoholic extract of Boswellia ovalifoliolata(BO) bark against PCM-induced hepatotoxicity. BO extract also demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro, as well as scavenger activity against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Administration of PCM caused a significant increase in the release of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase in serum. Significant enhancement in hepatic lipid peroxidation and marked depletion in reduced glutathione were observed after parac intoxication with severe alterations in liver histology. BO treatment was able to mitigate hepatic damage induced by acute intoxication of PCM and showed a pronounced protective effect against lipid peroxidation, deviated serum enzymatic variables, and maintained glutathione status toward control. The results clearly demonstrate the hepatoprotective effect of BO against the toxicity induced by PCM.

Diversity and Board Effectiveness： A Case of India

A number of research studies have dealt with the relationship between diversity and effectiveness of corporate boards. The present paper makes an attempt to provide an international perspective on diversity and effectiveness of corporate boards and examines such relationship in detail in the case of India. The paper presents the theory relating to diversity and board effectiveness with particular reference to women on boards. The position of diversity as related to the boards of National Stock Exchange （NSE） listed 511 companies and the 245 state-owned enterprises （SOEs） by the Government of India （GoI） is reflected in the paper. It then examines gender diversity specifically in the case of India and Singapore. Drawing from the evidence of diversity in the case of global companies, it offers the rationale for making boards global in composition and character. The paper highlights an interestiiag issue： whether the boards should have younger or veteran members？ This follows a discussion on diversity of boards in terms of skills, age, and personalities. Finally, the paper makes suggestions for balance boards to enhance their effectiveness and brings out lessons for the corporate organizations to promote diversity of their boards.

In the present work,we have reported the synthesis of 3D graphene structures by simple chemical reduction method for application in microbial fuel cell(MFC)as an *** synthesis procedure includes synthesis of graphene oxide by modified Hummers method followed by simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and the formation of *** 3D graphene structures are characterized using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy *** characterization is carried out to study the capacitive properties and impedance studies of electrodes in conductive electrolyte.3D graphene electrodes show remarkably high capacitive current,charge storage and lower charge transfer resistance as estimated through cyclic voltammetry and Nyquist *** order to evaluate the performance of 3D graphene electrodes in MFC,power density and polarization curves are recorded in three configurations by varying terminal electron acceptors(TEA)viz.,dissolved oxygen(MFC-DO),potassium ferricyanide and MFC without TEA(MFC-NDO).3D graphene electrodes exhibits maximum power density of 0.49 mW/m^(2) in potassium ferricyanide followed by MFC-DO(0.36 mW/m^(2))and MFC-NDO(0.34 mW/m^(2)).Present work highlights the viability of chemically synthesized 3D graphene electrodes as an efficient anode material in MFC.

Allium cepa root tip assay in assessment of toxicity of magnesium oxide nanoparticles and microparticles

Allium cepa bioassay had been used from decades for the assessment of toxicants and their harmful effects on environment as well as human health. Magnesium oxide（MgO） particles are being utilized in different fields. However, reports on the adverse effects of MgO nanoparticles on the environment and mankind are scarce. Hence, the toxicity of MgO particles is of concern because of their increased utilization. In the current study, A. cepa was used as an indicator to assess the toxicological efficiency of MgO nano-and microparticles（NPs and MPs） at a range of exposure concentrations（12.5, 25, 50, and100 μg/m L）. The toxicity was evaluated by using various bioassays on A. cepa root tip cells such as comet assay, oxidative stress and their uptake/internalization profile. Results indicated a dose dependent increase in chromosomal aberrations and decrease in mitotic index（MI） when compared to control cells and the effect was more significant for NPs than MPs（at p 〈 0.05）. Comet analysis revealed that the Deoxyribonucleic acid（DNA） damage in terms of percent tail DNA ranged from 6.8–30.1 over 12.5–100 μg/m L concentrations of MgO NPs and was found to be significant at the exposed concentrations. A significant increase in generation of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radicals was observed in accordance with the lipid peroxidation profile in both MgO NPs and MPs treated plants when compared with control. In conclusion, this investigation revealed that MgO NPs exposure exhibited greater toxicity on A. cepa than MPs.

The dominant geodynamic processes that underpin the formation and evolution of Earth’s early crust remain enigmatic calling for new information from less studied ancient cratonic ***,we present U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic compositions of detrital zircon grains from^2.9 Ga old quartzites and magmatic zircon from a 3.505 Ga old dacite from the Iron Ore Group of the Singhbhum craton,eastern *** detrital zircon grains range in age between 3.95 Ga and 2.91 *** with the recently reported Hadean,Eoarchean xenocrystic(up to 4.24 Ga)and modem detritus zircon grains from the Singhbhum craton,our results suggest that the Eoarchean detrital zircons represent crust generated by recycling of Hadean felsic crust formed at^4.3-4.2 Ga and^3.95 *** observe a prominent shift in Hf isotope compositions at^3.6-3.5 Ga towards super-chondritic values,which signify an increased role for depleted mantle and the relevance of plate *** Paleo-,Mesoarchean zircon Hf isotopic record in the craton indicates crust generation involving the role of both depleted and enriched mantle *** infer a short-lived suprasubduction setting around^3.6-3.5 Ga followed by mantle plume activity during the Paleo-,Mesoarchean crust formation in the Singhbhum *** Singhbhum craton provides an additional repository for Earth’s oldest materials.

Use of GIS in public health is currently limited to tracking immunizations, disease surveillance, and establishing new service areas. The potential of GIS to improve planning, implementation and monitoring of programs and to inform policymaking processes for universal access to healthcare is grossly underutilized. Major reasons for restricted use are paid access to GIS software and difficult interpretation for non-GIS professionals. WebGIS technologies present an opportunity for non-GIS public health professionals to present complex data and findings in simpler manner. Conventional GIS methods and Geovisualization are compared and contrasted in this paper using data from the MATIND project in the Gujarat state of India. In-depth literature review on GIS techniques used in health implementation research was conducted. In this paper, MATIND data have been used for comparing conventional GIS methods with a newer web based GIS tool-Geovisualization. GIS software is more useful for analytical purposes;whereas web based geovisualization techniques are much better for visualization and easy interpretation of results by non GIS public health researchers. As the images are easy to interpret, interactive/dynamic and not much technical expertise is required to perform basic analysis, the tool is useful for policy makers and planners. Geovisualization provides a user-friendly tool for presenting large scale community based survey data. Increased use of this tool will help to present implementation research in a creative way to the program planners and policy makers. For program managers, it is a useful tool to monitor implementation and impact of a program to improve health of population.
