Functional CT for assessment of early vascular physiology in liver tumors

BACKGROUND: CT perfusion has been reported to have great advantages in detecting hepatic diseases. However, currently there are no studies showing the potential value of multi-slice CT perfusion with the deconvolution model method in diagnosing early hemodynamic changes caused by liver tumors. This study was undertaken to determine if early hemodynamic changes caused by liver tumors can be depicted with the perfusion imaging of multi-slice CT. METHODS: Ten New Zealand white rabbits before and after VX2 liver tumor inoculation served as the experimental animals. Ten normal rabbits served as controls. All underwent multi-slice CT perfusion for the measurement of hepatic blood flow (HBF), hepatic blood volume (HBV), mean transit time (MTT), permeability of capillary vessel surface (PS) and hepatic artery index (HAI). RESULTS: With the exception of MTT, which decreased significantly at the tumor periphery, HBF, HBV,. PS and HAI increased significantly compared with the surrounding normal tissue. All these changes occurred at days 5-9 after tumor inoculation. Statistically significant changes in these values were detected with tumor growth. CONCLUSIONS: The hemodynamic changes in the liver caused by rabbit VX2 liver tumor can be detected after tumor inoculation, and functional CT can evaluate the physiological characteristics of early tumor angiogenesis.

Effect of Jiaji electroacupuncture in transected rat spinal cord

We evaluated the effect of Jiaji electroacupuncture on cell proliferation and the expression of markers of endogenous neural stem cell activation after complete spinal cord transection. Female Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups (n = 24 each): a sham-operated group, a control group, a Jiaji electroacupuncture group, and a Jiaji electroacupuncture preconditioning group. Motor function was significantly improved in the acupuncture groups compared to the control group at 7 and 14 d. Numbers of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)-, nestin-, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cells were significantly greater in the acupuncture groups than in the controls at each time point. Expression of nestin and GFAP mRNA was significantly higher in the acupuncture groups than in the controls at each time point. Thus, Jiaji electroacupuncture and preconditioning may promote the proliferation of endogenous neural stem cells after spinal cord transection.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord blood (UCB-MSCs) have good research and application prospects in the treatment of diabetes. We once induced UCB-MSCs to differentiate into insulin-producing cells (IPCs) in vitro, but we did not know the functions of these cells in vivo. The aim of this study was to assess the functional effects of IPCs on insulin secretion and their role in the treatment of diabetes in vivo. METHODS: UCB-MSCs were induced to IPCs by an inducing protocol with extracellular matrix gel. BALB/C nude mice were made hyperglycemic by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The diabetic mice were transplanted with 1x10(7) IPCs under the renal capsule or with phosphate-buffered saline as a control. After transplantation, the grafts were analyzed by immunocytochemistry for the expression of human insulin; the serum human insulin levels were measured; and blood glucose and body weight status were monitored. RESULTS: Immunofluorescence showed that numerous IPCs under the kidney capsule were insulin-positive. On day 14 after transplantation, the serum human insulin level of the treatment group (n=9) averaged 0.44 +/- 0.12 mU/L, which was higher than that of the control group (n=9) that did not express insulin (t=10.842, P<0.05). The diabetic mice remained hyperglycemic and kept losing body weight after IPC transplantation, and there was no significant difference in the control group. CONCLUSION: IPCs differentiated from UCB-MSCs generate human insulin in diabetic mice, but more research is needed to make further use of them to regulate hyperglycemia and body weight in vivo. BACKGROUND: Hepatic hilar cholangiocarcinoma can be diagnosed early with the progress in diagnostic imaging, and thus the rate of resection of the tumor has increased markedly. To assess the effectiveness of resection, we reviewed 185 cases of hepatic hilar cholangiocarcinoma diagnosed and treated at our hospital. METHODS: The clinical data of 185 patients with hepatic hilar cholangiocarcinoma who had been treated surgically from 1972 to 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The records of the 185 patients were divided into first stage (1972-1986) or second stage (1987-2006) according to the incidence of the tumor and its resection rate. Primary symptoms included upper abdominal discomfort or pain, anorexia, tiredness, weight loss and progressive jaundice. Ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) were first line methods for atraumatic diagnosis. If the patients displayed intrahepatic bile duct dilatation or were diagnosed as suffering from extrahepatic obstructive jaundice, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), MRCP or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) should be used. In this series, 87 patients underwent resection of the tumor (47.0%). Of the 87 patients, 43 received radical resection and 44 palliative resection. Fifteen patients underwent resection in the first stage and 72 in the second stage. A total of 74 patients were followed up after the resection. The median survival time of the radical resection group was 37 months and that of the palliative resection group was 17 months (P<0.001). The other 62 patients receiving no resection died within 1.5 years. CONCLUSIONS: Once patients are diagnosed with hepatic hilar cholangiocarcinoma, they should undergo exploratory laparotomy. Resection is the most effective method for the treatment of hepatic hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

Research on fiber optic gyro signal de-noising based on wavelet packet soft-threshold

Gyro＇s drift is not only the main drift error which influences gyro＇s precision but also the primary factor that affects gyro＇s reliability. Reducing zero drift and random drift is a key problem to the output of a gyro signal. A three-layer de-nosing threshold algorithm is proposed based on the wavelet decomposition to dispose the signal which is collected from a running fiber optic gyro （FOG）. The coefficients are obtained from the three-layer wavelet packet decomposition. By setting the high frequency part which is greater than wavelet packet threshold as zero, then reconstructing the nodes which have been filtered out noise and interruption, the soft threshold function is constructed by the coefficients of the third nodes. Compared wavelet packet de-noise with forced de-noising method, the proposed method is more effective. Simulation results show that the random drift compensation is enhanced by 13.1%, and reduces zero drift by 0.052 6°/h.

The crystallization of NiTi shape memory alloy sputter deposition film in the course of sputtering deposition and that after heat treated were studied. The relationship between the process factors, such as substrate type, temperature, as well as the crystallization when heat treated after plating was investigated. The results show that a new phase precipitates during heat treatment after sputtering deposition and the degree of crystallization among different layers and the stress in grains are obviously different.

Sonar images have complex background, low contrast, and deteriorative edges; these characteristics make it difficult for researchers to dispose the sonar objects. The multi-resolution analysis represents the signals in different scales efficiently, which is widely used in image processing. Wavelets are successful in disposing point discontinuities in one dimension, but not in two dimensions. The finite Ridgelet transform （FRIT） deals efficiently with the singularity in high dimension. It presents three improved denoising approaches, which are based on FRIT and used in the sonar image disposal technique. By experiment and comparison with traditional methods, these approaches not only suppress the artifacts, but also obtain good effect in edge keeping and SNR of the sonar image denoising.

Multisensor data fusion has played a significant role in diverse areas ranging from local robot guidance to global military theatre defense etc. Various multisensor data fusion methods have been extensively investigated by researchers, of which Klaman filtering is one of the most important. Kalman filtering is the best-known recursive least mean-square algorithm to optimally estimate the unknown states of a dynamic system, which has found widespread application in many areas. The scope of the work is restricted to investigate the various data fusion and track fusion techniques based on the Kalman Filter methods, then a new method of state fusion is proposed. Finally the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the introduced method.
