Effect of cold stratification on the temperature range for germination of Pinus koraiensis

Germination at low spring temperatures may offer a competitive advantage for the growth and survival of plant species inhabiting temperate forest *** koraiensis is a dominant species in temperate forests of northeastern *** seeds exhibit primary morphophysiological dormancy following dispersal in autumn,limiting natural or artificial regeneration:direct seeding and planting seedlings in *** aim of this study was to determine the optimum cold stratification temperature that induces germination to increase towards lower *** from two populations(Changbaishan and Liangshui)were cold stratified at 0,5 and 10℃.Germination to incubation temperatures(10/5,20/10,25/15 and 30/20℃;14/10 h day/night)were determined after 2 and 4 weeks,and 5.5 and6.5 months of cold *** 5.5 months,approximately 68-91%of seeds from both populations germinated at incubation temperatures of 25/15℃and 30/20℃,regardless of cold stratification *** the cold stratification temperature was reduced to 0℃and the period increased to 6.5 months,germination at 10/5℃significantly improved,reaching 37%and 64%for the Changbaishan and Liangshui populations,*** 6.5 months of cold stratification,there was a significant linear regression between cold stratification temperatures and germination at10/5℃.The range in temperatures allowing for germination gradually expanded to include lower temperatures with decreasing cold stratification temperatures from 10 to 5℃and further to 0℃.

Nail Holding Performance of Self-Tapping Screws on Masson Pine and Chinese Fir Dimension Lumbers

Screw connection is a type most commonly applied to timber *** important commercial tree species in China,Masson pine and Chinese fir have the potential to prepare wood *** this study,the effects of the diameter of the self-tapping screw and the guiding bores on the nail holding performance on different sections of Masson pine and Chinese fir dimension lumbers were mainly *** results showed that:(1)The nail holding strength of the tangential section was the maximum,followed by that of the radial section,and that of the cross section was the minimum.(2)The nail holding strength of Masson pine was higher than that of Chinese fir.(3)The nail holding strength grew with the increase in the diameter of self-tapping screws,but a large diameter would lead to plastic cracking of the timber,thus further affecting the nail holding *** pine and Chinese fir reached the maximum nail holding strength when the diameter of self-tapping screws was 3.5 mm.(4)Under a large diameter of screws,prefabricated guiding bores could mitigate timber cracking and improve its nail holding strength.(5)Prefabricated guiding bores were more necessary for the screw connection of Masson *** results obtained could provide a scientific basis for the screw connection design of Masson pine and Chinese fir timber structures.

Are phylogenies resolved at the genus level appropriate for studies on phylogenetic structure of species assemblages?

Phylogenies are essential to studies investigating the effect of evolutionary history on assembly of species in ecological communities and geographical and ecological patterns of phylogenetic structure of species *** phylogenies well resolved at the species level are lacking for many major groups of organisms such as vascular plants,researchers often generate a species-level phylogenies using a phylogeny well resolved at the genus level as a backbone and attaching species to their respective genera in the phylogeny as polytomies or by using a megaphylogeny well resolved at the genus level as a backbone and adding additional species to the megaphylogeny as polytomies of their respective ***,whether the result of a study using species-level phylogenies generated in these ways is robust,compared to that based on phylogenies fully resolved at the species level,has not been ***,we use 1093 angiosperm tree assemblages(each in a 110110 km quadrat)in North America as a model system to address this question,by examining six commonly used metrics of phylogenetic structure(phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic relatedness)and six climate variables commonly used in *** results showed that(1)the scores of phylogenetic metrics derived from species-level phylogenies resolved at the genus level with species being attached to their respective genera as polytomies are very strongly or perfectly correlated to those derived from a phylogeny fully resolved at the species level(the mean of correlation coefficients is 0.973),and(2)the relationships between the scores of phylogenetic metrics and climate variables are consistent between the two sets of analyses based on the two types of *** study suggests that using species-level phylogenies resolved at the genus level with species being attached to their genera as polytomies is appropriate in studies exploring patterns of phylogenetic structure of species in ecological communities

Ecological niche shifts affect the potential invasive risk of Phytolacca americana(Phytolaccaceae)in China

Background:Predicting the potential habitat of Phytolacca americana,a high-risk invasive species,can help provide a scientific basis for its quarantine and control *** the optimized MaxEnt model,we applied the latest climate data,CMIP6,to predict the distribution of potential risk zones and their change patterns for *** under current and future(SSP126,SSP245,SSP585)climate conditions,followed by invasion potential ***:The predictions of MaxEnt model based on R language optimization were highly accurate.A significantly high area of 0.8703 was observed for working characteristic curve(AUC value)of subject and the kappa value was *** the current climate conditions,the risk zones for *** were mainly distributed in Sichuan,Chongqing,guizhou,Hunan,and Guangxi *** contribution rate of each climatic factor of *** was calculated using the jackknife *** four factors with the highest contribution rate included minimum temperature of coldest month(bio6,51.4%),the monthly mean diurnal temperature difference(bio2,27.9%),precipitation of the driest quarter(bio17,4.9%),and the warmest seasonal precipitation(bio12,4.3%).Conclusion:Under future climatic conditions,the change in the habitat pattern of *** generally showed a migration toward the Yangtze River Delta region and the southeastern coastal region of *** migration exhibited an expansion trend,highlighting the strong future invasiveness of the *** on the predictions,targeted prevention and control strategies for areas with significant changes in *** were ***,this study emphasizes the need of an integrated approach to effectively prevent the further spread of invasive plants.

Spatial pattern and compositive structure of forests in guizhou

Remote-sensing and field data of guizhou forest resources in 2000 are processed using ArcGIS, with the production of forest resource distribution map, forest age class structure map, and forest canopy distribution map. Analysis of these data shows that: (1) though there are multiple types of forest resources, forest coverage is low (only 25.27%, excluding sparse woodland, shrub and underage-forest); (2) the geographical distribution of forests is quite uneven, mainly in the southeast of the province and in Zunyi prefecture; (3) the zonal evergreen broad-leaved forests have been seriously destroyed, with striking secondary features, i.e., coniferous forest and shrubbery account for the greatest proportion of guizhou forests; (4) the timber-forest is much larger in area than shelter-forest and economic forest; (5) young-and-middle aged forests are more widely distributed than near-and-over matured forest; and (6) the forest of guizhou is not enough to effectively protect the environment of karst mountain areas of the province.

Drivers of the differentiation between broad-leaved trees and shrubs in the shift from evergreen to deciduous leaf habit in forests of eastern Asian subtropics

In eastern Asian subtropical forests,leaf habit shifts from evergreen to deciduous broad-leaved woody plants toward higher *** shift has been largely explained by the greater capacity of deciduous broad-leaved plants to respond to harsh climatic conditions(e.g.,greater seasonality).The advantages of deciduous leaf habit over evergreen leaf habit in more seasonal climates have led us to hypothesize that leaf habits would shift in response to climate changes more conspicuously in forest canopy trees than in forest understory ***,we hypothesize that in the forests of the subtropics,plants at higher latitudes,regardless of growth form,would better tolerate seasonal harsh climates,and hence show less differentiation in leaf habit shift,compared to those at lower *** test these two hypotheses,we modelled the proportion of deciduous broad-leaved species and the incidence of deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved species in woody angiosperm species compositions of ten largesized forest plots distributed in the Chinese *** found that the rate of leaf habit shift along a latitudinal gradient was higher in forest trees than in forest *** also found that the differentiation in leaf habit shift between trees and shrubs is greater at lower latitudes(i.e.,warmer climates)than at higher latitudes(i.e.,colder climates).These findings indicate that specialized forest plants are differentially affected by climate in distinct forest strata in a manner dependent on latitudinal *** differences in forest plant response to changes in climate suggest that global climate warming will alter growth forms and geographical distributions and ranges of forests.

Phenotypic variation in thirteen native provenances of Lespedeza bicolor Turcz

Lespedeza bicolor Turcz is a native shrub in the temperate region of China. Thirteen provenances of L. bicolor were investigated in our study. Morphological diversity among and within provenances were analyzed based on 19 phenotypic traits, including seven vegetative growth characteristics, nine floral traits and three pod characteristics. The coefficient of variation （CV） ranged from 6.4% to 65.4% and the phenotypic differentiation coefficient from 43.3% to 97.3%. Analyses of variance showed that there were extremely significant variations among and within provenances in pod length. Differences in plant height, inter-nodal length, number of branches, leaf width, leaf length and leaf area were not remarkable among provenance, but distinct within provenances. Other traits showed evidence of contrasts. Variation among provenances was the main part of phenotypic variation. Correlation analysis indicated that there were highly significant positive correlations between plant height and other vegetative growth characteristics. Floral traits were not associated with vegetative growth characteristics. The 13 provenances of L. bicolor investigated can be classified into three groups according to a UPGMA cluster analysis.

The Effects of Climate Change on the Planting Boundary and Potential Yield for Different Rice Cropping Systems in Southern China

Based on climate data from 254 meteorological stations, this study estimated the effects of climate change on rice planting boundaries and potential yields in the southern China during 1951-2010. The results indicated a signiifcant northward shift and westward expansion of northern boundaries for rice planting in the southern China. Compared with the period of 1951-1980, the average temperature during rice growing season in the period of 1981-2010 increased by 0.4＆#176;C, and the northern planting boundaries for single rice cropping system （SRCS）, early triple cropping rice system （ETCRS）, medium triple cropping rice system （MTCRS）, and late triple cropping rice system （LTCRS） moved northward by 10, 30, 52 and 66 km, respectively. In addition, compared with the period of 1951-1980, the suitable planting area for SRCS was reduced by 11%during the period of 1981-2010. However, the suitable planting areas for other rice cropping systems increased, with the increasing amplitude of 3, 8, and 10%for ETCRS, MTCRS and LTCRS, respectively. In general, the light and temperature potential productivity of rice decreased by 2.5%. Without considering the change of rice cultivars, the northern planting boundaries for different rice cropping systems showed a northward shift tendency. Climate change resulted in decrease of per unit area yield for SRCS and the annual average yields of ETCRS and LTCRS. Nevertheless, the overall rice production in the entire research area showed a decreasing trend even with the increasing trend of annual average yield for MTCRS.
