Full-Annulus Simulation of the Surge Inception in a Transonic Centrifugal Compressor

Full annulus simulations of the flow which develops in a transonic centrifugal compressor are performed at two stable operating points （peak efficiency and near surge） and during the path to surge. At stable conditions, the flow field properties are analyzed by comparisons with experimental data and numerical simulations using a phase lagged approach previously carried out. Regarding the stage overall performance, an excellent agreement is obtained between the numerical results （both with time lagged approach and full-annulus calculation） and the ex- periments. From the full-annnlus simulations, the change in flow pattern from peak efficiency to surge is found to be perfectly similar to that obtained from the simulations using the time lagged approach. In particular, pro- vided that the operating point is stable, the flow proves to be chorochronic. The full-annulus simulations were continued after a unique small change in the throttle law applied at the exit of the numerical domain. The mass flow, pressure ratio and efficiency then significantly drop all the more the time progresses. The simulation becomes unstable and the surge inception well underway. The path to surge is found to be due to the enlargement of the boundary layer separation on the suction side of the diffuser vanes in accordance with the conclusions drawn from the chorochronic simulations and experiments. But as the time progresses, the flow loses its chorochronic character. Stall cells rotating at around 7% of the rotor speed develop and lead to surge in around 5 revolutions.

Influence of antibiotic-regimens on intensive-care unit-mortality and liver-cirrhosis as risk factor

AIM: To assess the rate of infection, appropriateness of antimicrobial-therapy and mortality on intensive care unit(ICU). Special focus was drawn on patients with liver ***: The study was approved by the local ethical committee. All patients admitted to the Internal Medicine-ICU between April 1, 2007 and December 31, 2009 were included. Data were extracted retrospectively from all patients using patient charts and electronic documentations on infection, microbiological laboratory reports, diagnosis and therapy. Due to the large hepatology department and liver transplantation center, special interest was on the subgroup of patients with liver cirrhosis. The primary statistical-endpoint was the evaluation of the influence of appropriate versusinappropriate antimicrobial-therapy on ***: Charts of 1979 patients were available. The overall infection-rate was 53%. Multiresistantbacteria were present in 23% of patients with infection and were associated with increased mortality(p with infection had significantly increased in-hospital-mortality(34% vs 17%, p with infection received inappropriate initial antimicrobial-therapy, no influence on mortality was observed. Independent risk-factors for in-hospital-mortality were the presence of septicshock, prior chemotherapy for malignoma and infection with pseudomonas spp. Infection and mortality-rate among 175 patients with liver-cirrhosis was significantly higher than in patients without liver-cirrhosis. Infection increased mortality 2.24-fold in patients with cirrhosis. patients with liver cirrhosis were at an increased risk to receive inappropriate initial antimicrobial ***: The results of the present study report the successful implementation of early-goal-directed therapy. Low-temperature solution process for preparing flexible transparent carbon nanotube film for use in flexible supercapacitors

Single-walled carbon nanotubes （SwNTs） possess high conductivity, mechanical strength, transparency, and flexibility, and are thus suitable for use in flexible electronics, transparent electrodes, and energy-storage and energy-harvesting applications. However, to exploit these properties, SwNTs must be de-bundled in a surfactant solution to permit processing and use. we report a new method to prepare a SwNT-based transparent conducting film （TCF） using the diazo dye 3,3＇-（[1,1＇-biphenyl]-4,4＇-diyl）bis（4-amino naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid）, commonly known as Congo red （CR）, as a dispersant. Uniform 20-nm-thick TCFs were prepared on rigid glass and flexible polyethylene terephthalate （PET） substrates. The CR-SwNT dispersion and the CR-SwNT TCFs were characterized via UV-Vis-NIR, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, field-emission scanning electron microscopy （FE-SEM） and dynamic light scattering （DLS） measurements. The sheet resistivity of the CRSwNT TCF was -34 ±6.6 Ω/□ with a transmittance of 81% at 550 nm, comparable to that of indium tin oxide-based films. Unlike SwNT dispersions prepared in common surfactants, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate （SDS）, sodium cholate （SC）, and Triton X-100, the CR-SwNT dispersion was amenable to forming TCF by drop coating. The CR-SwNT TCF was also very stable, maintaining a very low sheet resistivity even after 1,000 consecutive bending cycles of 8 mm bending radius. Further, manganese dioxide （MnO2） was electrochemically deposited on the CR-SwNT-PET film （MnO2-CR-SwNT-PET）. The as-prepared MnO2- CR-SwNT-PET electrode exhibited high specific capacitance and bendability, demonstrating promise as a candidate electrode material for flexible supercapacitors.
