Epidemiological and histopathological characteristics of thyroid carcinoma in a tunisian health care center

Background:Thyroid carcinoma(TC)accounts for almost 0.5%–1%of total malignancies.Its incidence is increasing rapidly worldwide.Several studies have drawn up the epidemiological profile of TC and its clinical and pathological features.However,to date,no similar studies have been conducted in tunisia.Aims:To establish an epidemiological profile of TC in a tunisian health care institute and to analyze its clinical and histopathological characteristics in our institute.Materials and Methods:We present a retrospective study reviewing the cases of TC diagnosed in our institution in a 4-year period.Results:We collected a sample of 192 cases of TC.It consisted of 31 males and 161 females(83.8%)with a sex-ratio M/F of 0.19.The mean age was 46.4 years.Papillary thyroid carcinoma was the most frequent histological subtype.The multifocality rate was 33.8%.The mean size of TC was 2.2±1.9 cm.60.9%of TC were staged pT1 and 20.3%had nodal involvement.Papillary thyroid microcarcinomas were noted in 37.5%of cases.Conclusion:Our results were consistent with those of the literature.A high proportion of pT1 and pN0 tumors were noted in our series,suggesting that TC's diagnosis and management was performed at an early stage of the disease in our institution.In addition,our study enabled us to notice the impact of the Coronavirus disease 19 crisis on the management of TC in our institution.Further studies are needed to establish the epidemiological profile of TC in tunisia and to assess its clinical and pathological features.

Geochemistry, mineral paragenesis and geothermal conditions of oreforming fluids from the Ain El Bey Cu–Fe deposit: potential occurrence of native gold and precious metal traces (North African orogenic belt, Northern tunisia)

The Ain El Bey abandoned mine, in North-West tunisia, fits into the geodynamic context of the European and African plate boundary. Ore deposit corresponds to veins and breccia of multiphase Cu–Fe-rich mineralization related to various hydrothermal fluid circulations. Petromineralogical studies indicate a rich mineral paragenesis with a minimum of seven mineralization phases and, at least, six pyrite generations. As is also the case for galena and native silver, native gold is observed for the first time as inclusion in quartz which opens up, thus, new perspectives for prospecting and evaluating the potential for noble metals associated with the mineralization. Scanning Electron Microscope--Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Transmission electron microscopy analyses show, in addition, a large incorporation of trace elements, including Ag and Au, in mineral structures such as fahlores(tetrahedrite-tennantite) and chalcopyrite ones. The mineral/mineral associations, used as geothermometers, gave estimated temperatures for the mineralizing fluids varying from 254 to 330 ℃ for phase Ⅲ, from 254 to 350 ℃ for phase Ⅳ, and from 200 to 300 ℃ for phases Ⅴ and Ⅵ. The seventh and last identified mineralization phase, marked by a deposit of native gold, reflects a drop in the mineralizing fluid’s temperature(< 200 ℃) compatible with boiling conditions. Such results open up perspectives for the development of precious metal research and the revaluation of the Cu–Fe ore deposit at the Ain El Bey abandoned mine, as well as at the surrounding areas fitting in the geodynamic framework of the Africa-Europe plate boundary.

In this work, we investigated aroma volatiles emanated by dry roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits of Cardariadraba (L.) Desv. growing wild in tunisia and its aerial part essential oils (EOs) composition. A total of 37 volatileorganic compounds (96.7%–98.9%) were identified;4 esters, 4 alcohols, 7 hydrocarbons, 12 aldehydes, 5 ketones,1 lactone, 1 organosulfur compound, 2 organonitrogen compounds, and 1 acid. The hydrocarbons form the maingroup, representing 49.5%–84.6% of the total detected volatiles. The main constituent was 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane(44.5%–76.2%) reaching the highest relative percentages. Forty-two compounds were determined in thetwo fractions of EOs, representing 98.8% and 97.2% of the total oil composition, respectively. The principal componentswere hexadecanoic acid (34.6%), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (18.3%), decanal (15.0%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (13.2%), and n-pentacosane (13%). Micromorphological details of the leaf and stem epidermisusing light microscopy revealed polygonal cells with sinuous walls in the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces andnearly rectangular and long ones with linear and thick walls for the stem epidermis. The stomata complexes wereanisocytic in the leaf epidermis and mainly anisocytic and rarely paracytic in the stem epidermis. Non-glandulartrichomes were unbranched and long with an acute apex or short with a convex apex. The glandular ones wereidentified for the first time in this species. They were short-stalked with a large secretory head. The highest stomatalindex (17.02%) was recorded in the abaxial leaf surface. The identification of headspace volatiles and essentialoil compounds can be used to characterize this species, and the various epidermis micromorphologicalfeatures are very useful for biosystematics taxonomic studies within Brassicaceae.

Design of an automated robotic microinjection system for batch injection of zebrafish embryos and larvae

This paper presents the design of a vision-based automated robotic microinjection system for batch injection of both zebrafish embryos and larvae.A novel visual recognition algorithm based on an automatic threshold and excessive dilatation is introduced to accurately identify the center of zebrafish embryos and larval yolks.A corresponding software system is developed using the producer-consumer model as the framework structure,and a friendly user interface is designed to allow operators to choose from a range of desired functions according to their different needs.In addition,a novel microstructural agarose device is designed and fabricated to simultaneously immobilize mixed batches of embryos and larvae.Moreover,a prototype microinjection system is fabricated by integrating hardware devices with visual algorithms.An experimental study is conducted to verify the performance of the robotic microinjection system.The results show that the reported system can accurately identify zebrafish embryos and larvae and efficiently complete batch microinjection tasks of the mixtures with an injection success rate of 92.05%in 13.88 s per sample.Compared with manual and existing microinjection systems,the proposed system demonstrates the merits of versatility,excellent efficiency,high success rate,high survival rate,and sufficient stability.

Impact of tourism on the vigilance behavior of the Cyprus rock agama(Laudakia cypriaca)

Escape behavior is a common antipredator strategy among wild animals.Here,we investigated the effect of four factors on the vigilance behavior of the endemic Cyprus rock agama(Laudakia cypriaca).Flight initiation distance(FID,the minimum distance to which an observer can approach a lizard before it flees)was measured in relation to the type of location(tourist vs.nontourist area),the observer’s starting distance,air temperature,and substrate temperature.We collected data for 39 agamas in tourist areas and 34 of these lizards in nontourist areas.As a whole,the mean starting distance was 10.5 m and the FID was 3.6 m.The average substrate temperature was 34.0℃ and the average air temperature 29.6℃.Only the type of area affected the agamas’escape decisions with FID being 1.8 m shorter in tourist areas than in nontourist areas(2.7 m vs.4.5 m).This is probably due to the habituation of lizards to the presence of humans in the former areas.This study shows that tourism strongly affects the behavior of lizards,which may have consequences for the functioning of the population.Tourists can increase the safety of lizards by creating a human shield to deter predators.Once the tourist season is over,lizards may become more vulnerable to predators.

Identification of Secondary Metabolites in tunisian Tilia platyphyllos Scop.Using MALDI-TOF and GC-MS

This study is the first to evaluate the phytochemical content and biological properties of tunisian T.platyphyllos Scop.A total of 23 compounds of essential oils were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)analysis of bracts and fruit extracts.The results show that oxygenated monoterpenes were the dominant class of essential oils.The phenolic composition was investigated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionizationtime of flight(MALDI-TOF).The analysis showed that the chemical profiles of the ethanolic extracts of bracts and fruits are substantially similar.The highest polyphenol content was found in the ethanolic extracts of the fruits(7.65 mg gallic acid equivalents(GAE).g−1 on dry weight(DW).As for the antioxidant capacity,it was recorded in the essential oils of the fruits(IC_(50)=0.91 mg.mL^(−1)).The results obtained showed that the antioxidant activity of the fruit essential oil was higher than that of the ethanol extract.The fruit essential oil was also found to have the highest reducing power(IC_(50)=0.67 mg.mL^(−1)).In terms of iron-chelating power,fruit essential oil has the highest chelating power(IC_(50)=2.03 mg.mL^(−1)).Compared to the ethanolic extract,the essential oil had the maximum antioxidant capacity.The enzymatic activity of acetylcholinesterase(AChE)inhibition of the essential oil from T.platyphyllos bracts had the most potent inhibitory effect(IC_(50)=0.77 mg.mL^(−1)),followed by the essential oil from the fruits(IC_(50)=0.95 mg.mL^(−1)).The results suggest that T.platyphyllos can be used as a potential source of naturally occurring bioactive compounds and antioxidants.

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure positive pulsating corona discharge in degradation of textile dye Reactive Blue 19 enhanced by Bi_(2)O_(3) catalyst

In this work,monoclinic Bi_(2)O_(3) was applied for the first time,to the best of our knowledge,as a catalyst in the process of dye degradation by a non-thermal atmospheric-pressure positive pulsating corona discharge.The research focused on the interaction of the plasma-generated species and the catalyst,as well as the role of the catalyst in the degradation process.Plasma decomposition of the anthraquinone reactive dye Reactive Blue 19(RB 19) was performed in a selfmade reactor system.Bi_(2)O_(3) was prepared by electrodeposition followed by thermal treatment,and characterized by x-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive xray techniques.It was observed that the catalyst promoted decomposition of plasma-generated H_(2)O_(2) into ·OH radicals,the principal dye-degrading reagent,which further attacked the dye molecules.The catalyst improved the decolorization rate by 2.5 times,the energy yield by 93.4%and total organic carbon removal by 7.1%.Excitation of the catalyst mostly occurred through strikes by plasma-generated reactive ions and radical species from the air,accelerated by the electric field,as well as by fast electrons with an energy of up to 15 eV generated by the streamers reaching the liquid surface.These strikes transferred the energy to the catalyst and created the electrons and holes,which further reacted with H_(2)O_(2) and water,producing ·OH radicals.This was indentified as the primary role of the catalyst in this process.Decolorization reactions followed pseudo first-order kinetics.Production of H_(2)O_(2) and the dye degradation rate increased with increase in the input voltage.The optimal catalyst dose was 500 mg·dm^(-3).The decolorization rate was a little lower in river water compared with that in deionized water due to the side reactions of ·OH radicals with organic matter and inorganic ions dissolved in the river water.

In this work the structural,electronic and thermoelectric properties of YbMg_(2)X_(2)(X=P,As,Sb,Bi)zintl compounds were investigated comprehensively using first principles study.The electronic properties were studied using PBE GGA,TB-mBJ and hybrid(YS-PBE0)potentials.All the structural parameters of optimized structures are in harmonious agreement to the available data.The band structure study illustrates that the titled materials manifest metallic and semi metallic nature using PBE and TB-mBJ potentials while they show wide band gap semiconducting behavior by following hybrid(YS-PBE0)potential.Total density of states(TDOS)and partial density of states(PDOS)were also calculated to glimpse the contribution of orbitals of atoms in the formation of bands.Transport properties were studied by using BoltzTraP2 code employed to WIEN2k.We get enormous values of Seebeck coefficient(S),power factor(PF)and thermoelectric figure of merit(ZT)for all the samples YbMg_(2)X_(2)(X=P,As,Sb,Bi),Moreover,the overwhelming transport properties for the titled compounds indicate the optimum level of carriers’concentration which pinpoints these materials to be better thermoelectrics in the 1-2-2 zintl family.

Quantum correlations and entanglement in coupled optomechanical resonators with photon hopping via Gaussian interferometric power analysis

Quantum correlations that surpass entanglement are of great importance in the realms of quantum information processing and quantum computation.Essentially,for quantum systems prepared in pure states,it is difficult to differentiate between quantum entanglement and quantum correlation.Nonetheless,this indistinguishability is no longer holds for mixed states.To contribute to a better understanding of this differentiation,we have explored a simple model for both generating and measuring these quantum correlations.Our study concerns two macroscopic mechanical resonators placed in separate Fabry–Pérot cavities,coupled through the photon hopping process.this system offers a comprehensively way to investigate and quantify quantum correlations beyond entanglement between these mechanical modes.The key ingredient in analyzing quantum correlation in this system is the global covariance matrix.It forms the basis for computing two essential metrics:the logarithmic negativity(E_(N)^(m))and the Gaussian interferometric power(P_(G)^(m)).These metrics provide the tools to measure the degree of quantum entanglement and quantum correlations,respectively.Our study reveals that the Gaussian interferometric power(P_(G)^(m))proves to be a more suitable metric for characterizing quantum correlations among the mechanical modes in an optomechanical quantum system,particularly in scenarios featuring resilient photon hopping.

An indicator model for assessing community resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic and its validation: A case study in Hong Kong

The COVID-19 outbreak had a significant negative impact on the world,and the fifth wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong brought a considerable shock to Chinese society.There is a growing call for more resilient cities.However,empirical evidence and validation of modeling studies of resilience indicators for urban community responses to the COVID-19 pandemic still need to be provided.In this study,a resilience assessment indicator model comprising 4 subsystems,7 indicators,and 12 variables was developed to assess the resilience of Hong Kong communities in response to COVID-19(i.e.,Resilience Index).Furthermore,this study utilized regression models such as geographically weighted regression(GWR)and multiscale GWR(MGWR)to validate the resilience model proposed in this study at the model and variable levels.In the regression model,the Resilience Index and the individual variables in the resilience model are explanatory variables,and the outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic(confirmed cases,confirmation rate,discharged cases,discharge rate)are dependent variables.The results showed that:(i)the resilience of Hong Kong communities to the COvID-19 pandemic was not strong in general and showed some clustered spatial distribution characteristics;(i)the validation results at the model level showed that the Resilience Index did not explain the consequences of the COvID-19 pandemic to a high degree;(ii)the validation results at the variable level showed that the MGWR model was the best at identifying the relationships between explanatory variables and the dependent variable;and(iv)compared with the model-level assessment results,the variable-level assessment explained the consequences of the COvID-19 pandemic better than the model level assessment results.The above analysis and the spatial distribution maps of the resilience variables can provide empirically based and targeted insights for policymakers.
