Aims Foliar herbivory and water stress may affect floral traits attractive to *** genotypes may differ in their responses to the interplay between these factors,and evolution of phenotypic plasticity could be expected,particularly in heterogeneous *** aimed at evaluating the effects of simulated herbivory and experimental drought on floral traits attractive to pollinators in genetic families of the annual tarweed Madia sativa,which inhabits heterogeneous environments in terms of water availability,herbivore abundance and pollinator *** In a greenhouse experiment with 15 inbred lines from a *** population located in central Chile(Mediterranean-type climate),we measured the effects of apical bud damage and reduced water availability on:number of ray florets per flower head,length of ray florets,flower head diameter,number of open flower heads per plant,flowering plant height and flowering *** Findings Apical damage and water shortage reduced phenotypic expression of floral traits attractive to pollinators via additive and non-additive *** in low water showed decreased height and had fewer and shorter ray florets,and fewer and smaller flower *** plants showed delayed flowering,were less tall,and showed shorter ray florets and smaller flower *** number of ray florets was reduced by damage only in the low water *** height,flowering time and number of flower heads showed among-family *** traits also showed genetic variation for plasticity to water *** floret length,flower head size and time to flowering showed genetic variation for plastic responses to apical *** in flowering time may allow *** to adjust to the increased aridity foreseen for its *** genetic variation for plastic responses was detected,conditions are given for evolutionary responses to selective forces acting on plastic *** suggest that the evolution o

Restorable variation of cytoplasmic type of male sterile line in rice by in vitro culture

Rice male sterile (MS) lines, IR66707A and IR69700A, which possess the cytoplasm of Oryza perennis and O. glumaepatula respectively, belong to the cytoplasmic type. Their sterility could be maintained but not be restored. By somatic cell culture of these two MS lines, 47 somaclones with 465 R1 plants were obtained. All of the 465 R1 plants were sterile in the spring season in Guangzhou. According to the expression of the R1 plants and the level of similarity to their donor parents, they could be divided into three types. The plants of type I were male sterile. The sterility of some somaclones of this type could be restored by the test crossing varieties or alternated to fertile by changes of some environmental conditions. The hybrid F1 of test cross from the MS somaclones in type I was fertile while the hybrid F1 from the donor MS lines was still sterile. Introduction of exogenous DNA into cotton via the pollen-tube pathway with GFP as a reporter

The green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria as a vital reporter for gene expression in plants is considered to have several advantages over other reporter genes. The pBIN35S-mGFP4 plasmid DNA has been introduced into cotton embryos by the pollen-tube pathway method. A transformed seedling has been verified according to its GFP-related fluorescence and Southern blotting analysis. The results provided direct and convincing facts in cytology and molecular biology for the pollen-tube pathway method, an efficient transformation technique used in plants.

Global change and climate-vegetation classification

Three phrases of the quantitative study of climate-vegetation classification and their characteristics are presented based on the review of advance in climate-vegetation interaction, a key issue of 'global change and terrestrial ecosystems (GCTE)' which is the core project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP): (i) characterized by the correlation between natural vegetation types and climate; (? characterized by climatic indices which have obviously been restricted to plant ecophysiology; (iii) characterized by coupling both structure and function of vegetation. Thus, the prospective of climate-vegetation classification for global change study in China was proposed, especially the study coupling climate-vegetation classification models with atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) was emphasized.

33 ku protein associated several polypeptides with nearly the same molecular weight but not the same isoelectric point

The 33 ku protein, prepared from NaCI-treated PSII particles, has shown an single band by SDS-PAGE. After being dialyzed against the low-osmotic medium at 4癈, it has been found that the 33 ku protein degraded into several small fragments. This result suggests that the preparations of 33 ku protein probably contain some latent proteinases. it has also been found, by the 2-D electrophoresis and IEF, that the preparations of 33 ku protein not dialyzed against the low-osmotic medium contain several polypeptides with nearly the same molecular weight but not the same isoelectric point as the 33 ku protein.

Three Uncommon Seaweeds of the Pacific Coast of Mexico

This report describes a new record and two unusual and rare species of marine algae collected from Oaxaca, Michoacán, Jalisco and Baja California Sur at Mexican Pacific coast. Boodleopsis verticillata is the first record in the Pacific shore of Mexico, in the case of Melobesia polystromatica, this is the sixth record at tropical Pacific while Litholepis sonorensisis reported for the third time in the Gulf of California. These results suggest that the taxonomic inventory of seaweed in the Pacific coast of Mexico is not yet complete, so attention must be given to the epiphytes, and other small and delicate species that inhabit the coast of Mexico. Morphological descriptions, distributional range, reproductive stage and samples examined are included.

Molecular cloning,in vitro expression and enzyme activity analysis of violaxan-thin de-epoxidase from Oryza sativa L.

The violaxanthin de-epoxidase gene was cloned from rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica). The full length of the cDNA is 1887 bp, encoding a 446-amino acids protein with the transit peptide of 98 amino acids. The bacterial expression vector pET-Rvde was constructed and the expression quantity of the exogenous protein increased with the induction time by 0.4 mmol/L IPTG. Its molecular weight was similar with that of the native VDE. Western blotting indicated that the expressed protein has immu-nological reaction with the VDE polyclonal antibody. The absorbance spectrum together with xanthophyll pigments quantification by HPLC demonstrated that the expressed VDE has its enzyme activity, which can de-epoxidate violaxanthin into antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin in vitro.
