Sustained delivery of vascular endothelial growth factor mediated by bioactive methacrylic anhydride hydrogel accelerates peripheral nerve regeneration after crush injury

Neurotrophic factors,currently administered orally or by intravenous drip or intramuscular injection,are the main method for the treatment of peripheral nerve crush ***,the low effective drug concentration arriving at the injury site results in unsatisfactory ***,there is an urgent need for a treatment method that can increase the effective drug concentration in the injured *** this study,we first fabricated a gelatin modified by methacrylic anhydride hydrogel and loaded it with vascular endothelial growth factor that allowed the controlled release of the neurotrophic *** modified gelatin exhibited good physical and chemical properties,biocompatibility and supported the adhesion and proliferation of RSC96 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial *** injected into the epineurium of crushed nerves,the composite hydrogel in the rat sciatic nerve crush injury model promoted nerve regeneration,functional recovery and *** results showed that the modified gelatin gave sustained delivery of vascular endothelial growth factors and accelerated the repair of crushed peripheral nerves.

Tooth fragment embedded in the lower lip for 10 months following dentoalveolar trauma:A case report with literature review

Traumatic injuries to maxillary anterior teeth are a common finding in children because of falls while playing. Sequelae of trauma to dental hard tissue include broken, lost, aspirated and swallowed teeth. One additional hazard is the embedding of fractured tooth fragments in the soft tissues, particularly in the lip. A 10-year-old male patient complained of pain in the lower lip. There was a history of trauma to the upper anterior tooth 10 months previously. Clinical examination showed scarring and discoloration over the lower lip, and the presence of a hard mass was felt on palpation. Intraoral examination revealed an Ellis and Davey class II fracture of number 11. A radiograph of the lip was taken, which showed a radiopaque structure similar to the shape of the missing tooth fragment. Under local anesthesia, the tooth fragment was removed successfully, and the class II fracture was restored with composite. Therefore, proper clinical and complete radiographic examination of both hard and soft tissues following dental trauma is essential to rule out such occurrences.

With the increasing demand for beauty and health,clear aligners(CAs)have been widely applied among patients with ***,patients treated with CAs also face some potential complications,such as demineralization,dental caries,and periodontal *** addition,some patients have additional needs to improve their quality of life,such as bleaching *** order to prevent or solve these problems,the modification of CAs is a promising method because their extensive long-term contact with tooth surfaces makes them ideal devices for implementing adjuvant medical *** this review,we discuss various advanced CAs with medical functions based on the clinical needs of *** far as we know,the additional functions of CAs mainly include antibacterial,remineralization,whitening,and accelerating tooth *** functions are achieved by two major pathways,the combination of CAs with drugs/biomaterials and increasing the capacity or affinity of *** addition,we discuss the current limitations of in vitro experiments which are designed to explore the effectiveness and properties of novel CAs,and the challenges of bringing a multifunctional appliance from proposal to clinical *** the end of this review,we provide insights into the broader prospects for the improvement of CAs.

Spindle cell lipoma of the mandibular mucogingival junction: a case report of unusual oral neoplasm

Spindle cell lipoma（SCL） is a benign lipomatous neoplasm typically located in the posterior neck and back of older males. It presents as a well-circumscribed mass in the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth or hard palate. There are only two case reports of SCL in the gingiva and alveolar ridge. Here, we report a case of SCL in the mandibular mucogingival junction of a 68-year-old male. Clinical,histopathological and immunohistochemical findings are presented. Although oral SCL is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasms occurring in the oral cavity.

Efficacy of bone grafts in jaw cystic lesions:A systematic review

BACKGROUND Bone grafts have been applied for many years in orthopedic surgery to assist with bone repair for defects or bone discontinuity caused by trauma and tumors as well as periodontal *** cysts are another common benign disease of the maxillofacial region which may lead to pathological bone fracture,loss of teeth,and ***,whether bone grafts are beneficial for bone regeneration in jaw cystic lesions and when bone grafts should be used remains *** To study the efficacy of bone grafts compared to spontaneous healing in the treatment of jaw cystic *** A literature search was performed in Medline,Cochrane Library and Embase to identify related articles published in English in the last ten *** following key words and Me SH terms were used:“jaw cyst”,“cystic lesion”,“odontogenic cyst”,“periapical cyst”,“dentigerous cyst”,“follicular cyst”,“keratocyst”,“treatment”,“surgery”,“bone graft”,“enucleation”,“cystectomy”,and“bone regeneration”.Case reports,clinical trials,clinical studies,observational studies and randomized controlled trials were *** quality was *** Ten studies(n=10)met the inclusion *** studies reported spontaneous bone healing after enucleation,three studies investigated the efficacy of various bone grafts,and two randomized comparative studies focused on the comparison between spontaneous healing and bone *** 90%of bone regeneration occurred within 6 mo after bone *** bone regeneration rate after cystectomy showed great variation,ranging from 50%to 100%after 6 mo,but reaching over 90%after 12 *** While the long-term superiority of bone grafting compared with spontaneous healing after cystectomy is unclear,bone grafts accelerate the process of healing and significantly increase bone quality.

Stem cell medicine is gaining momentum in the development of therapy for various end-stage *** search for new seed cells and exploration of their application prospects are topics of interest in stem cell *** recent years,vascular endothelial cells(VECs)have attracted wide attention from ***,which form the inner lining of blood vessels,are critically involved in many physiological functions,including permeability,angiogenesis,blood pressure regulation,immunity,and pathological development,such as atherosclerosis and malignant *** have significant therapeutic effects and broad application prospects in stem cell medicine for the treatment of various refractory diseases,including atherosclerosis,myocardial infarction,diabetic complications,hypertension,coronavirus disease 2019,and malignant *** the one hand,VECs and their extracellular vesicles can be directly used for the treatment of these *** the other hand,VECs can be used as therapeutic targets for some ***,there are still some obstacles to the use of VECs in stem cell *** this review,advances in the applications and challenges that come with the use of these cells are discussed.

Value of acoustic perceptual method for analysis of compensatory articulation errors in postoperative patients with cleft palate

Objective To establish an acoustic perceptual method analyzing the compensatory articulation errors in children with operated cleft palate via the formants of Chinese pure vowels. Methods The first three formants which represent vocal transmission character in Chinese pure vowels of 84 subjects with operated cleft palate, were measured by Computerized Speech Signal Processing System (CSSPS). The Chinese vowel graph of postoperative patients with cleft palate was stated by the first formant frequencies (F1) and the second formant frequencies (F2) of the Chinese pure vowels between the two groups. Results Values of F1 and F2 of vowels except [a] in the poor articulation group (Group A) were significantly different from those in the good articulation group (Group B) (P<0.05 or P<0.01). As compared with that in Group B, the vowel graph demonstrated the decreased perceptual distances in Group A. These findings indicated that there might still be the backward movements of tongue, perverted mandibular movements and disharmonious lip movements in addition to the velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in Group A. Conclusion The speech articulation of children with repaired cleft palate should be gained by correcting the aberrant compensatory articulation errors in the condition of velopharyngeal competence. Computerized Speech Signal Processing System (CSSPS), which is regarded as the content of objective quantitative measurement, is a precise, simple, reliable and atroumatic technique for children with cleft palate to analyze pathological compensatory articulation errors.
