BACKGROUND Few studies have simultaneously compared the predictive value of various frailty assessment tools for outcome measures in patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer ***,it is difficult to determine which assessment tool is most relevant to the prognosis of this *** To investigate the predictive value of three frailty assessment tools for patient prognosis in patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer *** This single-centre,observational,prospective cohort study was conducted at the Affiliated Lianyungang Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from August 2021 to July 2022.A total of 229 patients aged≥18 years who underwent surgery for gastrointestinal cancer were included in this *** collected baseline data on the participants and administered three scales to assess frailty:The comprehen-sive geriatric assessment(CGA),Fried phenotype and FRAIL *** outcome measures were the postoperative severe complications and increased hospital RESULTS The prevalence of frailty when assessed with the CGA was 65.9%,47.6%when assessed with the Fried phenotype,and 34.9%when assessed with the FRAIL *** the CGA as a reference,kappa coefficients were 0.398 for the Fried phenotype and 0.291 for the FRAIL scale(both P<0.001).Postoperative severe complications and increased hospital costs were observed in 29(12.7%)and 57(24.9%)patients,*** logistic analysis confirmed that the CGA was independently associated with increased hospital costs(odds ratio=2.298,95%confidence interval:1.044-5.057;P=0.039).None of the frailty assessment tools were associated with postoperative severe *** The CGA was an independent predictor of increased hospital costs in patients undergoing surgery for gastro-intestinal cancer.

Searching for life is one of the most important targets of Mars exploration missions. It has been considered that the Martian subsurface, away from the extreme surface environment, is a potentially habitable region for microbial ***, the distribution pattern of potential microbial habitats in the Martian subsurface has yet to be evaluated. Here, we investigate the subsurface habitats to depths of 20–60 cm from various landscapes, including slopes, gullies, channels, playas,and alluvial fans across the Mars-analog Qaidam Basin, NW China. We characterize subsurface niches by measuring microbial biomass and radiocarbon ages, and correlate them with soil properties including depth, moisture content, total organic carbon content, electric conductivity, pH, evaporite and clay mineral contents. We find more habitable niches for microbial colonization at depths of 5–25 cm as compared with the surface and deep subsurface across the hyperarid Qaidam Basin. Maximum biomass and biotic activity could be correlated with physical stability, limited radiation, and short-term moderate water availability in the shallow subsurface in hyperarid deserts. The findings of this study provide new perspectives on subsurface microbial habitats in Mars-analog hyperarid deserts and ongoing biosignature detection on Mars.

Years of intensive research has brought us extensive knowledge on the genetic and molecular factors involved in Alzheimer's disease(AD).In addition to the mutations in the three main causative genes of familial AD(FAD)including presenilins and amyloid precursor protein genes,studies have identified several genes as the most plausible genes for the onset and progression of FAD,such as triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2,sortilin-related receptor 1,and adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette transporter subfamily A member *** apolipoprotein Eε4 allele is reported to be the strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic AD(SAD),and it also plays an important role in ***,we reviewed recent developments in genetic and molecular studies that contributed to the understanding of the genetic phenotypes of FAD and compared them with *** further reviewed the advancements in AD gene therapy and discussed the future perspectives based on the genetic phenotypes.

Background: Successful implementation of evidence-based research into clinical practice was determined by four core elements, self-belief, the nature and level of evidence, the conductive context into which the study is to be implemented, and organizational factors facilitating the process. Aim: The current study aimed to examine barriers influencing evidence-based practice among critical care nurses in QATAR. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was utilized for the study resulting in data collected from 278 nurses during the period of Feb-2021 to March 2021 using the Barriers to research Utilization Scale (BTRUS). The BTRUS consisted of data on various information sources utilized by nurses for support in practice, potential barriers for evidence-based practice, and perceived skills on applying research-based evidence. Result: The most significant organizational barriers were lack of time, lack of empowerment to change practice, lack of support from colleagues in implementing research evidence, and lack of access to research articles. Self-perceived barriers were irrelevance of research evidence to current practice, studies having methodological flaws, skepticism about research findings, a large amount of research evidence, and inability to understand statistics. The Nurse’s age, years of nursing practice, academic attainment, and organizational position influenced self-reported barriers and utilization of sources of Evidence. Conclusion: Organizational support, improved self-belief, and evidence-based practice expertise may reduce barriers to implementing research evidence in clinical Practice.

Intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH) remains the second-most common form of stroke with high morbidity and *** can be divided into two pathophysiological stages:an acute primary phase,including hematoma volume expansion,and a subacute secondary phase consisting of blood-brain barrier disruption and perihematomal edema *** date,all major trials for ICH have targeted the primary phase with therapies designed to reduce hematoma expansion through blood pressure control,surgical evacuation,and ***,none of these trials has resulted in improved clinical *** is a ubiquitous element that also plays roles in vasodilation,hemostasis,and blood-brain barrier *** models have highlighted potential therapeutic roles for magnesium in neurological diseases specifically targeting these pathophysiological *** studies have also demonstrated inverse associations between admission magnesium levels and hematoma volume,hematoma expansion,and clinical outcome in patients with *** associations,coupled with the multifactorial role of magnesium that targets both primary and secondary phases of ICH,suggest that magnesium may be a viable target of study in future ICH studies.

Background:Medullary thyroid carcinoma(MTC)is a rare disease,but it exhibits more aggressive *** aim of this study was to improve the diagnostic accuracy of MTC before surgery by analyzing the clinical and ultrasonic data of patients with ***:The study included 71 patients(96 lesions)with histopathologically proven MTC between April 2011 and September 2016 in the Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical *** clinical characteristics and sonographic findings were retrospectively reviewed and compared between the ultrasonic correct diagnosis group and the ultrasonic misdiagnosis group with the t test or Mann-Whitney U test for quantitative parameters and the Х^2 test or Fisher exact test for qualitative ***:Compared with the ultrasonic correct diagnosis group,the proportion of the cystic change in the ultrasonic misdiagnosed group was high(25.0%vs.4.2%),the uncircumscribed margin and irregular shape proportions were low(20.8%,58.3%vs.74.7%,87.3%),calcification was relatively rare(20.8%vs.56.3%),and rich vascularity was relatively rare(25.0%vs.78.9%).Conclusions:In the case of atypical MTC,such as cystic change,circumscribed margin,regular shape,no calcification,no rich vascularity,and normal cervical lymph nodes,MTC is easily misdiagnosed as benign by ***,ultrasound,cytology and serum calcitonin should be comprehensively evaluated for a preoperative diagnosis of MTC.
