Supplemental UV-A and UV-B Affect the nutritional Quality of Lettuce and Tomato: Health-Promoting Phytochemicals and Essential Nutrients

UV radiation plays an important role not only in plant growth and development but also in the accumulation of essential nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals in plants. The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of supplemental UV-A, UV-B, and UV-AB on the nutritional quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa, cv. red leaf “New Red Fire” and green leaf “Two Star”) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L., cv. BHN-589) grown in a greenhouse. Supplemental UV radiation was provided by UV lamps 5 - 6 days prior to harvest. Supplemental UV-A produced higher accumulation of total phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant capacity in red leaf lettuce compared to other treatments. Overall, supplemental UV-A produced a stronger response than other UV treatments and control in the accumulation of many phenolic compounds including luteolin-7-glucoside, quecetin-3-glucoside, and apigenin-3-glucoside in red leaf lettuce. However, UV-B and UV-AB had a negative response in the accumulation of many phenolic compounds including chlorogenic acid, luteolin-7-glucoside, quercetin-3-glucoside, and apigenin-3-glucoside in both red and green leaf lettuce varieties. In tomato fruits, supplemental UV-A had no effect on their total phenolic concentration. However, supplemental UV-B radiation for 3 h or UV-AB radiation for 9 h exposure produced higher total phenolic concentration in the fruits compared to other supplemental UV treatments. A Review of the Associations between Dietary Fiber Intake and Cancer Prevention or Prognosis

The increase in tumor incidence is closely related to dietary *** recent years,many researchers have carried out in-depth research to investigate whether increasing the intake of dietary fiber can prevent tumors and improve the prognosis,but the results have been *** herein searched the literature in common academic databases and incorporated and summarized the relevant *** literature clearly indicates that dietary fiber can protect against the following cancers:colorectal cancer,breast cancer,pancreatic cancer,ovarian cancer,and head and neck *** is also evidence that dietary fiber intake can exert protective effects against cancers of the liver,lung,stomach,small bowel,kidney,and esophagus,as well as lymphoma,but the data have so far been relatively *** effects on endometrial cancer and prostate cancer still remain *** terms of the effects on the cancer prognosis,dietary fiber does not appear to have an impact on colorectal cancer or breast *** more research is needed for some kinds of cancer,it is clear that increasing the intake of dietary fiber is beneficial for preventing the occurrence and development of several major types of cancer,with no major adverse *** therefore recommend that most of individuals increase their intake of dietary fiber.

Diversity synthesis of tetrahydroprotoberberines glycosides by combined chemical and microbial catalysis

The present study was designed to construct the structurally diverse library of tetrahydroprotoberberines(THPBs) by combining the methods of chemical nonselective demethylation and microbial glycosylation. HPLC-MS/MS analyses tentativelyidentified 12 de-methylated and 9 glycosylated derivates of THPBs and 5 rarely oxidized glycosides of THPBs in the library. Through this effort, we achieved not only a variety of the THPBs and their glycosides but also tested the catalytic characteristics and capabilities of G. deliquescens NRRL 1086.

Dietary Combination of Fish Oil and Hemoglobin Hydrolysates Alters Serum and Liver Lipid Contents in Rat

Fish oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, and to reduce serum triacylglycerol (TAG) levels by stimulating lipid oxidation and inhibiting lipogenesis in the liver. A small number of studies have demonstrated the synergistic effect of fish oil and other bioactive components. This study examined the effect of fish oil in combination with porcine hemoglobin (Hb) hydrolysates on serum and liver lipid contents in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups;one group was fed a casein and soybean oil-based semi-purified basal diet and other three groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 2% fish oil, 0.175% Hb hydrolysates, and 2% fish oil plus 0.175% Hb hydrolysates, respectively, for 4 weeks. The fish oil diet decreased serum and liver TAG contents but did not change serum and liver cholesterol levels. The dietary combination of fish oil and Hb hydrolysates decreased serum and liver TAG and cholesterol contents owing to the additive effect of both compounds, and this diet reduced the serum non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol content as a result of a synergistic effect. This hypolipidemic effect was in part caused by enhanced excretion of fecal fatty acids, neutral steroids, and acidic steroids. The results of this study suggest that the combined intake of fish oil and Hb hydrolysates may play beneficial roles in the prevention of cardiovascular disease as compared with fish oil alone.

A new six intraperitoneal injection insulin-mimetic vanadyl(Ⅱ) compounds [(VD3^-1)(VO^+2)(AAn^-1)](where(n=1~6);AA1=isoleucine, AA2=threonine, AA3=proline, AA4=phenylalanine, AA5=lysine and AA6=glutamine) were synthesized by the chemical reactions between vitamin D3(VD3), VOSO4 and amino acids(AAn) with equal molar ratio 1∶1∶1 in neutralized media. The structures of these complexes were elucidated by spectroscopic methods like, infrared and solid reflectance spectroscopes. Magnetic moments and electronic spectra reveal square pyramid geometrical structure of the complexes. The infrared spectra assignments of these complexes revealed that the chelation towards vanadyl(Ⅳ) ions existed via deprotonation of the hydroxyl group of VD3 drug ligand and so amino acids act as bidentate ligand via N-amino and O-carboxylate groups. The anti-diabetic efficiency of these complexes were evaluated against streptozotocin induced diabetic male albino rats.

Phytochemical Profile and <i>In Vitro</i>Antioxidant Properties of Essential Oils from Powder Fractions of <i>Eucalyptus camaldulensis</i>Leaves

Dried leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis were finely grinded and fractionated by sieving into four granulometric classes (355 μm). The obtained powder fractions were used for essential oil (EO) extraction by hydrodistillation and their phytochemical profile and in vitro antioxidant activities were evaluated. The mother powder (unsieved powder) was used for comparison. Particle size exerted a significant influence (p in vitro antioxidant properties of the EOs. Comparatively, the mother powder had the highest contents of α-pinene (55.6%), camphene (3.4%) and limonene (3.7%), while 1,8-cineole (26.6% and 22.4%), exo-fenchol (5.6% and 3.5%), α-campholenol (4.2% and 3.4%), L-trans-pinocarveol (5.5% and 2.7%), L-borneol (12.6% and 6.8%) and α-terpineol (16.4% and 7.6%) are the main compounds of EOs from the <100 μm and 100 - 200 μm fractions, respectively. Stability of Bitter Orange Juice-Olive Oil Salad Dressings Stabilized with Polysaccharides

Emulsifying properties of bitter orange （Citrus aurantium） juice-olive oil salad dressings stabilized with different polysaccharides were investigated. Oil-in-water emulsions （50：50, v/v） were prepared with bitter orange juice-olive oil in the presence of various concentrations （0.1%-1.0%, w/v） of pectin or guar gum or iota-（t-）carrageenan and then these emulsions were homogenized. Emulsion activity index （EAI） and emulsion stability index （ESI） were determined spectrophotometrically by measuring time-dependent changes in turbidity. Creaming stability of emulsions was followed by visual observation of serum layer with respect to time. Microstructures of emulsions were examined by using polarized light microscopy. The addition of polysaccharides improved emulsion stability and emulsions containing higher amounts of polysaccharide were more stable against creaming. Microscopic observations showed that emulsions containing polysaccharides had small droplets as compared to that of emulsions without polysaccharides and emulsions were flocculated due to the presence of polysaccharides. Larger droplets and creaming were observed when the polysaccharide concentration was not sufficient for coverage.

Effect of Different Conditions on the Structural Color of Konjac Glucomannan Particles

In this paper,molecular dynamics simulation was applied to synthesize a layered structural color from Konjac glucomannan（KGM） and the effect of particle diameter and temperature were investigated. A series of methods such as high voltage electric field treatment,the transfer matrix method and the CIE standard colorimetric system were simulated to obtain the chromaticity coordinates and to analyze the color changes of KGM particles. The results revealed that as the particle diameter increases,the structural color of KGM particles deflects towards the yellow wavelength within the visible spectrum; and as the reaction temperature rises,the structural color deflects towards the blue and violet wavelengths within the visible spectrum.
