Objective: To explore the effects of total flavonoids of Hippophae rhamnoides L. (TFH), quercetin (Que) and isorhamnetin (Isor) on the intracellular free calcium (Ca~ 2+ _ i) in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY).Methods: Fluo 3-acetoxymethylester(Fluo-3/AM) was used to observe the effects of TFH (100mg/L) and its essential monomers, namely Que (10~ -4 mol/L) and Isor (10~ -4 mol/L) on changes of Ca~ 2+ _ i in cultured SHR and WKY VSMC (abbr. to Ca-SHR & Ca-WKY) following exposure to high K~+, norepinephrine (NE) and angiotensin Ⅱ(AngⅡ), and to compare with the effects of verapamil (Ver). Results: (1) TFH, Que and Isor had inhibitory effects on resting Ca-SHR (P0.05). (2) High K~+ could increase Ca-SHR more significantly than Ca-WKY (P<0.05); TFH, Que and Isor could inhibit the elevation of Ca~ 2+ _ i induced by high K~+-depolarization, with the effects similar to that of Ver, and the effect on Ca-SHR was more significant than that on Ca-WKY (P<0.05). (3) NE and AngⅡcould increase Ca-SHR more significantly than Ca-WKY (P<0.05), TFH, Que and Isor had remarkably inhibitory effect on the elevation of Ca-SHR and Ca-WKY induced by NE or AngⅡ. (4) In the absence of extracellular Ca~ 2+ , TFH, Que and Isor also had certain inhibitory effect on Ca-SHR and Ca-WKY induced by NE, and the effect on the former was more significant than that on the latter(P<0.05). Conclusion: TFH, Que and Isor might decrease the levels of Ca~ 2+ _ i in VSMCs by blocking both voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDC) and receptor-operated calcium channels (ROC) in physiological or pathological state, which may be one of the important mechanisms of their hypotensive and protective effects on target organs in patients with hypertension.

The complexes of rare earth elements with 1,2-diphenyl-4-butyl-3,5-Pyrazolidinedione （PBH, phenylbutazone） were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV-Vis, EPR and magnetic moment measurements. Based on these studies the complexes were formulated as [Ln（PB）3（H2O）2].nH2O, where Ln=Eu（III）, Gd（III）, Tb（III）, Dy（III） and Er（III）. From IR spectra, it was found that PBH acted as a bidentate mono-ionic ligand coordinating through two carbonyl oxygen of the pyrazolidinedione ring. The thermal analysis of all the complexes was carried out at a heating rate of 10 oC/min. The kinetic aspects of the complexes were evaluated. The nega-tive entropy value of the complexes indicated a more ordered state for the activated complexes. The photoluminescence property of Tb（III） complex was investigated. It showed all the characteristic emission peaks of Tb^3＋ with a life time of 0.98914 ms.

Yarn Architecture Analysis of Two-step 3D Braided Composites

A comprehensive study of yarn architecture of two-step rectangle 3D braided composites is presented. Firstly, the braided surface, the shapes of yarns and the intertwining between braider yams and axial yams are analyzed from experimentation. With the microstructure being defined, three levels of unit cell structure are identified, i.e. large unit cell, second unit cell and minimal unit cell. Secondly, based on the minimal unit cell in the interior and on the boundary of the entire cross-section, the deformations of axial yams squashed by braider yams contribute to the increase of the fiber packing factors of axial yams. Finally, the predicted fiber volume fraction of the composites decreases with the increase of linear density of the braider yam and the pitch length. Favorable correlations between the predicted and the experimental results arc found for six groups of the composites.

Pseudotumoral cerebellitis in childhood is an uncommon presentation of cerebellitis mimicking a brain tumor. It often follows an inflammatory or infectious event, particularly due to varicella virus. Patients could have a wide clinical spectrum on presentation. Some patients may be asymptomatic or present at most with mild cerebellar signs, whereas others may suffer severe forms with brainstem involvement and severe intracranial hypertension mimicking tumor warranting surgical intervention. Imaging techniques especially multimodal magnetic resonance imaging represent an interesting tool to differentiate between posterior fossa tumors and acute cerebellitis. We describe a case of pseudotumoral cerebellitis in a 6-year-old girl consequent to mumps infection and review the literature on this rare association.

Genetic expression for an endosperm trait in seeds of cereal crops may be controlled simultaneously by the triploid endosperm genotypes and the diploid maternal genotypes. However, current statistical methods for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) underlying endosperm traits have not been effective in dealing with the putative maternal genetic effects. Combining the quantitative genetic model for diploid maternal traits with triploid endosperm traits, here we propose a new statistical method for mapping QTLs con- trolling endosperm traits with maternal genetic effects. This method applies the data set of both DNA molecular marker genotypes of each plant in segregation population and the quantitative observations of single endosperms in each plant to map QTL. The maximum likelihood method implemented via the expectation-maximization algorithm was used to the estimate parameters of a putative QTL. Since this method involves the maternal effect that may contribute to en- dosperm traits, it might be more congruent with the genetics of endosperm traits and more helpful to increasing the preci- sion of QTL mapping. The simulation results show the pro- posed method provides accurate estimates of the QTL effects and locations with high statistical power.

Objective： To observe the tested results of the segmental range of motion （ROM） of lumbar spine by charge couple device （CCD）-based system for 3-dimensional real-time positioning （CCD system）, and to analyze its clinical significance. Methods： Seven patients with lumbar joint dysfunction and 8 healthy subjects were tested twice by the CCD-based system with an interval of 10 min. Results： The ROM of the patients was obviously lesser than that of the healthy subjects. The measuring data of segmental ROM of lumbar spine by CCD system is correlated significantly to the same data checked later on the same subjects in every direction of the movements. The differences between two checks are usually less than 1 degree. Conclusion： Specially designed CCD based system for 3-dimensional real-time positioning could objectively reflect the segmental ROM of lumbar spine. The system would be of great clinical significance in the assessment of the biomechanical dysfunction of lumbar spine and the effect of the treatment applied.

Mechanism of influence of chloride ions on electrogenerative leaching of sulfide minerals

A dual cell system was used to study the influence of chloride ions on the electrogenerative leaching of sulfide minerals. The results show that the influences of chloride ions on a series of electrogenerative leaching system are similar, and chlorine ion is involved in the electrogenerative leaching process of sulfide minerals directly. The output power increases with the increase of Cl^- concentration. The influence on the electrogenerative leaching rate decreases when the Cl^- concentration reaches a certain value. The mechanisms of anodic reaction are deduced based on the reasonable hypothesis, and kinetic equations with respect to chlorine ions for each sulfide mineral are obtained. The kinetic equations show that when concentration of Cl^- is relatively low, the electrogenerative leaching rates are predicted to have 2/5,3/7,1/3 and 1/3 order dependence on Cl^- concentration for chalcopyrite concentrate,nickel concentrate, sphalerite and galena. As concentration of Cl^- increases, the correlative dependence of electrogenerative leaching rate on concentration of Cl^- becomes weak.

Sequential algorithms combining non-invasive markers and biopsy for the assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B

AIM： To assess the performance of several noninvasive markers and of our recently proposed stepwise combination algorithms to diagnose significant fibrosis （F ≥ 2 by METAVIR） and cirrhosis （F4 by METAVIR） in chronic hepatitis B （CHB）.METHODS： One hundred and ten consecutive patients （80 males, 30 females, mean age： 42.6 ± 11.3） with CHB undergoing diagnostic liver biopsy were included. AST-to-Platelet ratio （APRI）, Forns＇ index, AST-to-ALT Ratio, Goteborg University Cirrhosis Index （GUCD, Hui＇s model and Fibrotest were measured on the day of liver biopsy. The performance of these methods and of sequential algorithms combining Fibrotest, APRI and biopsy was defined by positive （PPV） and negative （NPV） predictive values, accuracy and area under the curve （AUC）. RESULTS： PPV for significant fibrosis was excellent （100%） with Forns and high （〉 92%） with APR1, GUCI, Fibrotest and Hui. However, significant fibrosis could not be excluded by any marker （NPV 〈 65%）. Fibretest had the best PPV and NPV for cirrhosis （87% and 90%, respectively）. Fibrotest showed the best AUC for both significant fibrosis and cirrhosis （0.85 and 0.76, respectively）. Stepwise combination algorithms of APR1, Fibrotest and biopsy showed excellent performance （0.96 AUC, 100% NPV） for significant fibrosis and 0.95 AUC, 98% NPV for cirrhosis, with 50%-80% reduced need for liver biopsy. CONCLUSION： In CHB sequential combination of APRI, Fibrotest and liver biopsy greatly improves the diagnostic performance of the single non-invasive markers. Need for liver biopsy is reduced by 50%-80% but cannot be completely avoided. Non-invasive markers and biopsy should be considered as agonists and not antagonists towards the common goal of estimating liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Plexiform fibromyxoma is a rare, special type of mesenchymal tumor. The most common presenting symptoms are anemia, hematemesis, and hematochezia, without sex or age predilection. The reported cases have mainly occurred in the gastric antrum and pylorus region, with some cases in the duodenum. CASE SUMMARY We report here a case of plexiform fibromyxoma in the upper segment of the jejunum, which was continuously followed up for 3 years after surgical removal. Plexiform fibromyxoma showed multinodular or plexiform growth. The cells in the tumor node were spindle-shaped but few in number and mitotic figures. Small blood vessels and mucous matrix were found among the tumor cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the plexiform fibromyxoma cells were positive for smooth muscle actin, focally positive for CD10, and negative for cytokeratin, CD117, DOG-1(discovered on GIST-1) desmin, S-100, epithelial membrane antigen, and CD34. Ki-67 labeling index was < 5%. Plexiform fibromyxoma showed benign biological behavior. After 3 years of consecutive postoperative follow-up, no obvious signs of metastasis or recurrence were found by imaging examination. CONCLUSION Plexiform fibromyxoma is a rare type of mesenchymal tumor. The diagnosis mainly depends on pathological examination, and it should be distinguished from other gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors.
