The Nature of “Natural Disasters”: Survivors’ Explanations of Earthquake Damage

The distinction between natural and human-made disasters is ingrained in everyday language. Disaster scientists have long been critical of this dichotomy. Nonetheless,virtually no attention has been paid to how disaster survivors conceptualize the causes of the disasters they experience. In this mixed-methods longitudinal study, 112 survivors of the2016–2017 Central Italy earthquakes completed questionnaires 3 and 16 months following the earthquakes, with the aim of assessing attributions of blame for the earthquake damage. In-depth interviews were also conducted with 52 participants at the 3-month mark to explore representations of causation for the earthquake damage. The distinction between disasters caused by nature and disasters caused by humans was not supported by survivors of the earthquake. In the longitudinal surveys, building firms and the State were assigned as much blame as nature for the earthquake damage, at both 3 months and 16 months after the *** this complexity, in the interviews, the causes of the earthquake damage, rather than being understood as purely natural, were perceived as a complex mosaic composed of political, technological, natural, and moral *** empirical work shows that disaster survivors combine both nature-based and human-based explanations of disasters, rather than subscribing to one or the other. These findings have practical implications for disaster risk reduction and response.

Local Volunteerism and Resilience Following Large-Scale Disaster: Outcomes for health Support Team Volunteers in Haiti

In-depth interviews with local Haitian volunteers trained in a psychological disaster recovery program called health Support Team(HST) provide insight into the psychosocial outcomes resulting from their engagement with the program. Qualitative interviews were conducted with four male Haitian participants who had survived the January 2010 Haiti earthquake and had worked as HST volunteers for at least 6 months. Interviews were analyzed using narrative inquiry analysis, which allows individuals to discover and disclose a deeper meaning in their experience and enables the researchers to access more detailed data. Previous research supports the claim that volunteerism provides many important psychological benefits, and the results of the present study suggest that among survivors of large-scale disasters, volunteerism is beneficial as a means of increasing psychological resilience and facilitating personal recovery. Results and themes of our analysis included a reported increase in both hope and purpose for the respondents. Findings suggest that volunteerism on the part of members of the surviving community following large-scale disaster increases resilience among the volunteers and further contributes to their recovery.

Depression is the most prevalent mental disorder in pregnancy, and yet it is lessstudied than postpartum depression despite the consequences it may have onboth the pregnant woman and her offspring. Therefore, it would be important toknow which risk factors may favour the appearance of antenatal depression inorder to carry out appropriate prevention interventions. The aim of the presentreview was to identify the main risk factors of antenatal depression. We searchedin databases PubMed and PsycINFO for articles published about the factorsassociated with antenatal depression from January 2010 through December *** literature review identified three main groups of antenatal depression riskfactors: sociodemographic, obstetric, and psychological. First, among thesociodemographic variables, the low level of studies and the economic incomeclearly stood out from the rest. Then, not having planned the pregnancy was themain obstetric variable, and finally, the main psychological risk factors werehaving a history of psychological disorders and/or depression as well aspresenting anxiety, stress, and/or low social support during pregnancy. Thisreview shows that the antenatal depression is affected by multiple factors. Mostcan be identified at the beginning of the pregnancy, and some are risk factorspotentially modifiable through appropriate interventions, such as psychologicalfactors. For this reason, it is important to carry out a good screening for depressionduring pregnancy and consequently, be able to prevent its appearance ortreat it if necessary.
