Despite therapeutic advances in recent decades, colorectal cancer is still the third most frequent neoplasm worldwide, with significant morbidity and mortality in young and middle-aged adults. Therefore, advance in treatment options for patients who are afflicted with tumor subtypes without effective therapies is needed. Antarctica macroalgae are substances-producing organisms with important biological activities, in which antitumor properties are investigated, showing promising cytotoxic results. There are no reports so far showing antitumor activity of macroalgae Palmaria decipiens extracts against colorectal tumors. This study aims to evaluate the effect of macroalgae P. decipiens extract from Antarctic on tumor cell HCT-116 and non-tumor cell HaCaT lines. The phenolic compounds present were identified by high performance liquid chromatography. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined by the DPPH radical inhibition method and cytotoxicity was evaluated through MTT assay. Cell death events were identified using dual staining with acridine orange/ethidium bromide and flow cytometry. The quantification of phenolic compounds present in the extracts identified the presence of three main compounds among them is kaempferol. The metanolic extract showed inhibition within 72 h of treatment in HCT-116 and potential antioxidant activity. The results presented in this study point out an imbalance in the redox metabolism and also a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential integrity, most likely inducing cell death mechanisms after 72 h exposure to treatment with metanolic extract. These events could be observed by penetration of propidium iodide through membrane damage. The results indicate that the extract of the Antarctic macroalgae P. decipiens interferes in the mechanisms of action of colorectal cancer tumor cells, acting as a potential antitumor and antioxidant agent.

Application of the Concept of Terminal Value in the Analysis of Projects Based on Renewable Energy

Projects for energy supply based on the exploitation of renewable energy have a very predictable cash flow. The initial costs are usually high, with the acquisition of technologically evolving equipment. However, maintenance costs are relatively low and easily predictable. Likewise, operating costs are often very low as there is no need to buy inputs. Power storage devices are often short-lived and contribute to a relative cost increase. At the same time, these projects are often not approved because they are directly compared to projects based on non-renewable resources, with cash flows that may not be so easily predictable and with much lower start-up costs. Fossil fuels have hardly predictable costs, established by non-technical criteria and related to geopolitical issues. In addition, their operating costs are usually very high, precisely because of the need to purchase fossil fuels. This paper proposes the calculation of terminal value in cash flows of power generation projects and its application for feasibility analysis of projects based on renewable resources. The proposed method suggests the calculation of terminal value as the moving average calculated for five-year intervals with constant growth rate of 5%. This method also encourages the inclusion in the cash flow of annual values that add up to the end of the analysis period the sufficient value to renew the system components at the end of the usual analysis period of 20 - 25 years. The application of the proposed method to a diesel wind system simulated with the well-known Homer software indicates the modification of the results of the Homer with the preference for systems with greater wind penetration instead of the systems with greater consumption of fossil fuels.

Designing ultrathick and hierarchical electrodes is effective to deal with the challenge of high areal capacity and high power density for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)***,a thick electrode with hierarchical porous and multidimensional conductive network is fabricated by 3D printing tech-nology,in which both the conducting polymer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sul-fonate(PEdoT:PSS)and graphene oxide(GO)play the dual roles as binders and conductive *** a consequence,the 3D-printed thick electrode(~900 mm)with a mass loading of~47 mg/cm^(2) exhibits a good rate capability of 122 mA·h/g at 2 C,a high areal capacity of up to 5.8 mA·h/cm^(2),and stable cycling performance of~95%capacity retention after 100 ***,the C-O-S bond is further confirmed by the spectral analysis and the DFT calculation,which not only hinders the stack of nanosheets but enhances the mechanical stability and electronic conductivity of electrodes.A stable covalent multidi-mensional conductive network constructed by 3D-printing technology provides a new design strategy to improve the performance of LIBs.

Plant Composition of Skuas Nests at Hennequin Point, King George Island, Antarctica

We investigate the plant composition in the Skuas nest at Hennequin Point, located in the Admiralty Bay Area, King George Island, Antarctica. Sample of 61 activity nests were analyzed. 21 plant and lichenized fungi species were found in the nest composition, being the mosses Sanioniauncinata (Hedw.) Loeske and Polytrichastrumalpinum (Hedw) G. S. Smith the most frequent species found in the Skuas nests. Usneaantarctica Du Rietz was the most frequent lichen and the grass Deschampsiaantarctica Desv was the most frequent flowering plant found in the nests. These results contribute for the environmental menagement of the Admiralty Bay area research activities.

We studied 20 women with mean age 57.7 years, being 9 with unilateral quadrantectomy surgery, 1 with surgery type bilateral quadrantectomy and 10 with unilateral mastectomy surgery. The average operative time was 9.8 (nine years and eight months). We studied using surface electromyography the mean deltoid, upper trape-zius and latissimus dorsi muscles in order to check the action potentials of these muscles when performing a sequence of movements of these joints. It was used for the study, an Acquisition Data System ADS1000 containing 12 channels. The electromyography (EMG) results expressed in RMS (Root Mean Square) were analyzed and compared between the surgical and nonsurgical side, among the three repetitions of the sequence of movements and between mastectomy and quadrantectomy for each muscle. For statistical analysis we used analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a double repetition factor

The campo rupestre sensu lato is a vegetation type that occurs in South American mountains,supports a distinctive flora characterized by high rates of endemism,high herbaceous species richness and often-neglected but also species-rich of the arboreal *** aimed to investigate how environmental factors and elevation are associated with the distribution and diversity of woody species in different rupestrian vegetation types across South *** a database of 2,049 woody species from 185 sites across four vegetation types within the campo rupestre,we assessed how the vegetation types were grouped according to their floristic composition and number of shared indicator species,as well as by using different beta diversity *** most important variables from a set of 27 variables(***,geo-edaphic and climatic)explaining species distribution were identified using redundancy analysis(RDA)and variation partitioning *** distribution of vegetation types was related to both environmental and spatial fractions,with a set of 17 variables retained(***,grass cover and temperature seasonality as the most important variables).There was an association between the floristic composition of each vegetation type and the elevation *** the identified vegetation types are floristically related,they are distinguished by exclusive and habitat-specialist woody *** uniqueness of vegetation types should be considered in terms of complementarity for the conservation of campos rupestres.

Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Aims Soil plays an important role in the formation and heterogene-ity of habitats and thus can cause changes in vegetation struc-ture and plant *** differentiation between Cerrado/savanna and forest is well known,but the relationship between soil and habitats from savannic or forest formations still needs to be better understood,particularly in tropical ecotonal *** studied the association between attributes of plant com-munities,namely structure and diversity,and physicochemical characteristics of soils in the Caatinga domain at the transition to Cerrado in *** Chemical and physical analyses of soils were performed in samples of 38 plots from savannic formations and 30 plots from forest *** was characterized floristically and structurally in all plots,five habitats being assessed in each plant *** features and vegetation parameters were highly distinct among the different *** Findingsin general,forest habitats were more nutrient rich than savannic ***,soil variables showed effects both on vegetation structure and on its species diversity,more pronouncedly in the savannic *** were structurally distinct,and diversity differed between savannic and forest communities;however,a higher differentiation occurred when the savannic formation habitats were compared among *** plant diversity did not differ among forest formation habitats,soil attributes showed a close relationship with edaphic factors and can contribute for similar *** soil-vegetation relationship in highly diverse ecotonal landscapes is important from the conservation biology point of view and aid in the execution of proactive plans for the maintenance of ***,we noticed that diversity and soil behaves distinctly between savannic and forest communities.
