Impact of municipal solid waste incineration on heavy metals in the surrounding soils by multivariate analysis and lead isotope analysis

Municipal solid waste(MSW) incineration has become an important anthropogenic source of heavy metals(HMs) to the environment. However, assessing the impact of MSW incineration on HMs in the environment, especially soils, can be a challenging task because of various HM sources. To investigate the effect of MSW incineration on HMs in soils, soil samples collected at different distances from four MSW incinerators in Shanghai, China were analyzed for their contents of eight HMs(antimony, cadmium, chromium, copper,lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc) and lead(Pb) isotope ratios. Source identification and apportionment of HMs were accomplished using principal component analysis and Pb isotope analysis. Results indicated that the relatively high contents of cadmium, lead,antimony, and zinc in the soils at 250 m and 750–1250 m away from the MSW incinerators were related to MSW incineration, while the elevated contents of the other four HMs were associated with other anthropogenic activities. Based on Pb isotope analysis, the contribution ratio of MSW incineration(which had been operated for more than 14 years)to the accumulation of Pb in soil was approximately 10% on average, which was lower than coal combustion only. Incinerator emissions of Pb could have a measurable effect on the soil contamination within a limited area(≤1500 m).

Dementia is a comprehensive category of brain diseases that is great enough to affect a person＇s daily functioning. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer＇s disease, which makes most of cases. New researches indicate that gastrointestinal tract microbiota are directly linked to dementia pathogenesis through triggering metabolic diseases and low-grade inflammation progress. A novel strategy is proposed for the management of these disorders and as an adjuvant for psychiatric treatment of dementia and other related diseases through modulation of the microbiota （e.g. with the use of probiotics）.

Tumor hypoxia is intimately associated with gliomas,which represents a significant threat to human health and are resistant to the first-line chemotherapeutic drug temozolomide(TMZ)due to *** this work,to overcome TMZ resistance in orthotopic gliomas,aptamer-functionalized liposomes are manufactured to encapsulate TMZ and photothermal agent IR780,and can cross the blood-brain barrier and actively target *** is possible to employ liposomes for both fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging simultaneously due to their stability and excellent photothermal conversion *** chemo/photothermal synergistic therapeutic effect of liposomes on gliomas is demonstrated by their abilities to target orthotopic gliomas,alleviate tumor hypoxia and consequently reverse resistance of glioma cells to TMZ,thereby extending the survival time of tumor-bearing mice,making the nanoplatforms and their synergistic chemo/photothermal therapy as a potential clinical treatment for gliomas.

Background: With Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) during the COVID-19 pandemic at risk, nurse administered ECT has become a treatment resource. This study aims to investigate the experiences of two senior ECT nurses practicing Nurse Administered ECT. Method: Qualitative reflective interviews were conducted;the data was then analyzed and presented as corresponding themes for inductive data driven analysis. Each nurse was asked to recall positive and negative events from their practice and describe how their experiences have enabled them to cope. Results: Theme 1: The nurse’s competence is positively influenced by feedback, leading to enhancement of personal and professional development. Theme 2: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses report an increased sense of teamwork among staff, and feel that “we are all in this together”. Theme 3: The nurse’s ability to manage difficult situations is dependent on their education, individual knowledge, and experience. Limitations: The authors had the role of both researcher and participant. Conclusion: This study found that both nurses valued feedback above any medical and technical skills they had acquired. This strengthened their advanced practice enabling them to handle difficult situations with confidence. The COVID 19 pandemic has led to advanced nursing practice replacing the junior doctor role within ECT treatment. The nurses felt this had been recognised by their organisation and has led to an increased pride in their work. This paper would suggest that Nurse administered ECT is a valuable resource and that, future nurses could be at the forefront of delivering ECT services.

Background Implantable cardioverter defibrillator （ICD） is the only effective therapy in patients with life threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Inappropriate detection and therapy by ICDs are the most common causes of side effects that affect the quality of life in ICD recipients. This study evaluated the incidence and causes of inappropriate detection and therapy by ICDs in patients in our hospital. Methods From January 2000 to December 2005, fifty patients who received ICD implantation for ventricular arrhythmias for prevention of sudden cardiac death were evaluated in this study. Each ICD was programmed using clinical arrhythmic and cardiac data of the patient before discharge. Patients were followed up by standard schedule after implantation and all data retrieved from each device were collected and saved for further analysis. Results No arrhythmic event was detected in 12/50 （24%） patients during the period of follow-up. Among the remaining patients, 11 （22%） experienced inappropriate detections and therapies during follow-up in this study. ICD detected 383 ventricular tachyarrhythmia （VT） and 108 ventricular fibrillation （VF） episodes and delivered 678 therapies. In VT group, ICD delivered 413 antitachycardiac pacings （ATPs） and 118 shocks, among which 78 ATPs and 9 shocks were initiated by 55/383 （14.3%） inappropriate detections. In VF group ICD delivered 147 shocks, among which 56 shocks were initiated by 28/108 （26.9%） inappropriate detections. Overall, more than 50% of these episodes were caused by atrial fibrillation （AF） with rapid ventricular response, followed by electromagnetic or myopotential interference. In addition, most inappropriate therapies occurred within one year after ICD implantation. Conclusions About one fifth of patients experienced ICD inappropriate detection and therapy after implantation. The main cause was AF with rapid ventricular response, followed by electromagnetic or myopotential interference.

Objective:To investigate the larvicidal and pupicidal activity of spinosad against Anopheles stephensi ***:Spinosad from the actinomycete,Saccharopolyspora spinosa was tested against Anopheles stephensi at different concentrations（0.01,0.02,0.04,0.06 and 0.08 ppm.）, and against first to fourth instar larvae and ***:The larval mortality ranged from 36.1±1.7 in（0.01 ppm） to 79.3±1.8（0.08 ppm） the first instar *** LC50 and LC90 values of first, second,third and fourth instar larva were 0.001,0.031,0.034,0.036 and 0.0113,0.102,0.111,0.113, *** pupal mortality ranged from 33.0±2.0（0.01 ppm） to 80.0±0.9（0.08 ppm）.The LC50 and LC90 values were 0.028 and 0.1020,*** reduction percentage of Anopheles larvae was 82.7%,91.4%and 96.0%after 24,48,72 hours,respectively,while more than 80% reduction was observed after 3 ***:In the present study spinosad effectively caused mortality of mosquito larvae in both the laboratory and field *** is predicted that spinosad is likely to be an effective larvicide for treatment of mosquito breeding sites.
